Jerusalem - The three-year-old haredi boy who was allegedly starved by his mother over a period of two years, and who became the center of a political and religious storm following the woman's arrest, was released from Shiba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer.

Relatives of the boy picked him up from the hospital will be caring for him until the completion of the legal proceedings against his mother.

Last month, news of the alleged abuse and the subsequent arrest of the mother sparked nearly a week of riots in Jerusalem.

Members of an extreme haredi sect, to which the mother and her family belonged, charged that the hospital staff and police were acting recklessly in accusing the mother of wrongdoing. According to the woman and her supporters, the boy suffered from multiple sicknesses which prevented him from eating properly.

Doctors charged, however, that it was the mother who caused the boy to fall ill repeatedly through his lack of proper nourishment. They claimed that a hidden video showing the mother removing a vital IV from her son's arm as he was confined to a hospital bed was evidence enough to turn to the police.

Since her arrest, the mother has consistently refused to cooperate with investigators, and has repeatedly failed to show up for both court appointments and psychiatric evaluations. Last week she was deemed fit for trial, and her next hearing is scheduled for August 4.

The boy, who was admitted to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem weighing a meager 7 kg, was eventually transferred to Shiba Medical Center after the hospital staff received numerous threats, and following continued protests outside the facility. When he was released, the boy was said to weigh over 10 kg.

Now that he is away from the doctor at Hadasah, he recovered enough to be discharged. IY"H, he will be reunited with his mother soon.

BTW, what does "this yinglach" mean? Sounds like you arevtrying to speak a language you do not know.

The doctor was asked one question: Why did he give the child Ankinra (which according to Professor Moshe Tishler of the Rheumatology Department in Ichilov Hospital causes severe side effects, including a significant drop in weight) and not allow him to be fed anything else otherwise? The doctor does not want to answer.

The prosecution does not allow the Health Dept. committee do any investigation on the doctor and hospital?

For all those who want to blame the frum rather than the secular by saying "Obviousely ......."

You must also say that Obviously it was the Hadasa Hospital Doctor who administered the wond drug Ankinra, which causes weight loss, and Hadasa is the one to blame and not the mother.

The reason he gained weight so quickly in the new hospital is "Obviousely" because Hadasa Hospital was forced to stop using the Wrong Drug, Drug which caused the problem, the Drug Ankinra.

Reb Scientist, if the mother was not abusing the boy, then how in the world did he get sick in the first place? What illness exactly does he have, and how would your royal highness treat it?

If Hadassah made any mistakes, then it was because they administered too many tests trying desperately to find out what was wrong with the boy, when they had no rational reason to believe it was the mother all along.

Once the mystery was solved, and it was simple starvation, they immediately fixed the problem and made the boy better by giving him enough food.

anikinra is not for children, if you read the literature on it. which means by putting him on this drug, they were endangering the child. also, it is suspected that 15 months on this drug causes cancer -- which is my guess of what the onco at Hadassa's research target here was trying to see and why this kid was on the oncology ward.

For those of you attacking the hospital, do you really think that a Jewish hospital which is renowned for caring for the sick and injured for so many years would want to purposefully abuse a little boy? For what reason? There is no possible motive for what you are saying. Do you have any idea how many Chareidi Jews the Hadassah Hospital has helped over the years? Please, let's be rational.

Stop trying to shift blame and understand that people who rioted and defended this mother (who needs help and our Tefilos) were and are wrong.

A Tale of Two Cities is the title of a book by Charles Dickens. It contains no inappropriate language or behavior for anyone with an 8th grade education. I am posting this here because of all the attention on one police report about a starving boy. We have no idea what private trouble was really going on with the little boy. We hope that his ima is innocent, but it does not sound like a secular plot to interfere in hareidi lifestyle. Some readers on this site have made wild claims about Hadassah Hospital, suggesting that doctors at that hospital would experiment on a patient. Have we sunk to the level of the ignorant goyishe peasants in A Tale of Two Cities? Two hundred years ago in France, poor men were too ignorant to learn to read French so they listened to irrational rumors.

merkin. did you do your homework? hadassa is in the research business BIG time with no regulations. There is no FDA yet, though a govt. study with the Millken Institute called for one recently. There is no truth there either. The doc in charge of the case, has on the site that he is licensed to practice in maryland, when in fact, his license in maryland is no longer valid. Trials of drugs not allowed here in the USA are allowed there, and the drug the kid was on, (again, do your research) is something being studied because it is suspected that long term use of it causes CANCER!

if i recall correctly there was a previous article informing us that healt minister Litzman was ordering a full scale probe, am i correct about that? if yes then please let us continue to pray for the childs full and complete recovery.
and let us remain quiet till that investigation is complete, unless of course the probe is prohibited from investigating the parties they feel need to question.

further i recall reading in various publications that mother had a great relationship with staff till she seeked Rabbi Firer's opinion when he advised a change of venue things became "suspicious and the mother became a suspect.

cant someone draw a timeline with some basic facts on a graph and make it less confusing.

while i cant understand anyones sick agenda in creating a libel it seems to smell when a victim and family is turned into a perpetrator.
everyone is inclined to believe the good guy "hadassah" and not the
"evil" mother .
it reminds me how in the old days the abused victim was never believed, when a esteemed clergy was saying othewise.

The child weighted no more than 8kg, BMI of 12,xx (where 20 is minimum), when they started giving anakinra. So obviously, the weight loss was not due to anakinra, especially when "feeding through mouth, gastrostomy, gastro-jejunostomy caused severe pain, although nothing could be seen on repeated imaging."

I am astonished at two things:

1. The degree of hysteri and suspicion of some chareidim towards anything they view as secular, including a hospital that has treated thousands of chareidi patients over the years. This is caused by an "us verses them" mentality and lack of education.

2. The degree to which many chareidim will believe pure shtuss and bobbe maisos if it suits their prejudices.

I think it is time the Jewish world returned to the old ways of education and rational thought. Somewhere along the way, with all the persecution and ghetto life, we lost our way and forgot how to think and reason using facts and logic.

Wow, someone who reads REAL literature, not just blogs! You & I are a dying breed, my friend!

And I so agree. In fact, there are those who say the hospital is a combination of Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) & 1984 (George Orwell.) Personally, I think their tall stories fit better with Tales from the Brothers Grimm.

Mothers have intuition, and she felt something wasn't right and that her boy was getting worse with this medicine they were administering (and by the way they admitted to her that his condition was misdiagnosed). And if most of the dear VIN readers don't know, medicine is usually put into the same IV tube as the nutrient bag! So she figured that this stuff is killing him so she pulled it out. Personally I would've transferred him sooner. But I understand she wanted to be in the hospital closest to home. It's not easy to get rides and taxi's are expensive to use daily roundtrip for 3 years. And no one just wants to leave their sick child alone in the hospital.
From experience I will tell you that I made aliyah 1.5 years ago and I have hated almost every medical related experience here, except when my daughter was born fortunately at tel hashomer (Sheba) after I was treated roughly at another hospital whose name I won't mention. Some doctors ask you what do you want them to do for you after you clearly explain what your problem is. In NewYork my experiences were a thousand times better. Sadly to say some doctors here dont have a clue and before all this starving mother business, I verbally expressed my belief that some doctors here bought their degrees over the internet. Unfortunately these days money can buy anything, anything can be forged and if you have a friend(s) in high places you are in.

Yes, like the case of the frum person in Monsey who set up an office and pretended to by a gynecologist. He probably printed up his medical license on his computer.

I don't know where some of you posters are posting your opinions from, but I am in Israel, have made aliyah recently, and have 15 years in the health field, some of it in oversight and monitoring of health facilities. So far, I am very unimpressed to put it mildly by most of the doctors I have met, really unhappy with the administrators and the Kupat Cholim (health plan), the clerks, the attitudes, the prevailing nastiness (not everyone but more than there should be), the presumption of patient ignorance, the refusal to provide information. I am not impressed with Hadassah either. If they had a leg to stand on there should have been a statement early on from top administration regarding this case. I have found overall a real inability to listen to patients which is characteristic of bad medicine.

The mother has said that this child was sick from birth and medical records should show what kind of treatment he has had and for what reasons.

Further, I am not haredi but I would really appreciate it if someone with some actual knowledge can tell me what "extreme haredi" means. Is Toldot Aharon actually more stringent in practice than Gur, Breslov, Satmar, or whatever?
