New York City - Fare increase have become MTA's bailout for all problems created by them and the union's ever since the union went on strike 3 years ago.

the service is deteriorating, rider ship that was at its peak when gas prices were $ 4 dollars a gallon, declined sharply as the price of gas went down, bonuses are handed out as if it were a candy store-its new head of the MTA is just one example.

by year 2011, the budget for the MTA paying pensions and medical benefits will double the budget of the actual work force.

there is no longer a "Mrs. Subway" on the payroll of the MTA to travel and criticize the MTA for the failures, all riders now turned into "Mr. & Mrs. Subway", the second avenue line is another typical example of money going down the drain without any proper planning.

we need to abolish the entire MTA board and start fresh, union leaders have to take responsibility for some of the problems.

if the MTA wants to take the public for a ride, the new Coney Island will open soon

The MTA is using the riders and taxpayers as the MAT and the ATM.

Its time for change, and as Councilman for the 33rd district I will work hard for change.

Isaac Abraham is a candidate for NYC council in the 33d district

As a city councilman, he will have absolutely no authority over the MTA, as the board is controlled by the governor.
This is a typical tactic used by candidates - to talk about hot topic items, even though they can do nothing about it. I am surprised Isaac has stooped to using those tactics.

So propose a different way to pay for it. Or as they say in English "Put up or shut up"

His accusations are true but what will he / can he do about it as councilman?
Also, as a candidate for councilman, I would think he should know that sentences should start with a capital letter.

Mr. Abraham,

Please learn before you start demanding changes (a la the President) from the MTA that you have little over them so your voice means nothing. That being said IF you were able to change anything there what would it be??

Would you get rid of the union?

Would it be a "pay as you go" meaning if YOU ride, YOU pay? This would mean that when you DONT ride, you DON'T pay. This would mean that subway fares as well as MTA Bridge & Tunnel fares would be the income to pay for salary etc., for the agency.

Mr. Abraham, to want "change" is nice but we need to know what "change" you want. Last year 52.9% of the country voted for "change" and "hope" without knowing what those words meant. Now, some 6+ months after Obama took office without being properly vetted by the Obamamania press, we see what kind of "change" and "hope" he was referring to and it isnt the change of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Reagan, etc.

So now let's say you are the Councilman, what are you going to do to fix the MTA?

You wrote very nicely, but what's your plan of action?

abolishing the board does not explain how it will be funded. The bottom line is that thise that use it got to pay for it.

Is this better or worse than all other taxation or fee's imposed by Federal, State & city governmnet? We are the cash cow, ATM whatever you call it, there is no consideration for the taxpayer anywhere. Government is not responsible, first they spend than collect whatever they need, just the oppsite of private enterprise, must earn than spend

Jul 31, 2009 at 11:17 AM What can be done? It's Easy! Says:

The city has plenty of money in the billions. How the city spends the money is a matter of priorities where elected officials have a say.

Elected officials can make "head fly" if they don't use the MTA funds intelligently to cut waste, cut the triple digit income of management who just smoke cigars and stop wasting money (Billions of dollars) on putting in cameras in every train and then having to raise the fair because of that.

The city claims poverty, when it can't help mass transit, but has plenty of money for Parks_Makeover, when nothing is wrong with the old park, or regularly ripping up good streets for re-pavement, when nothing was wrong with the old street, wasting city money on recycling, by sending 3 Garbage trucks and employees instead of one truck, wasting money, constantly (every day) making new bike lanes somewhere, and tons of other city wasted money, instead of helping Mas Transit.

the amazing irony is, that the train system was privately built and owned. The fare was a nickel.. it was quite a few years ago. when the operators wanted to raise the fare to a dime, the outcry was so loud that the mta was formed, and they expropriated the train system. One of the first things they ended up doing was raise the fare to a quarter.. go figure. Well now we have the mta to deal with. The solution might be to re privatize it, but that is highly unlikely. at this point who should subsidize the mta, if not the users?
as it is, the mta gets hundreds of millions from car tolls.
