The state will raise the tax per gallon of wine and spirits by 25 percent. Customers will pay $5.50 in tax per gallon of liquor and 87 1/2 cents per gallon of wine.
Lawmakers did not include beer when they raised the tax to help balance the budget in the recession.
Some bars and restaurants say they won't pass the higher tax on to customers.
However, Adam Stromfeld, who is a co-owner of a liquor store in Egg Harbor Township, says wholesale suppliers are taking advantage of the tax increase to raise the cost of their products. Stromfeld says the increases will hit those who buy lower-priced liquors the hardest.

Too many people quit smoking.... they have to make up the money somehow!
This is a horrible slippery slope that NY will find itself on soon too. For all the people who are fine with taxing things that don't impact them, just wait... soon it will be something you need.... like a bottle of wine.
Ridiculous taxes on anything, once approved, will come back around eventually.
Even if you are anti-smoking or anti-drinking or anything else... letting the government tax the life out us is never the solution. One day when all us smokers quit, I am sure all the non-smokers will be thrilled to see that 300%-600% tax (depending on the state you live in) transferred to something else.
Stop government waste and stop grotesque taxation! This government was founded on the idea that we would be free from unjust taxation. 300-600% taxes should be considered unjust by everyone. Soon alcohol will be just as high.

When that happens they raise the taxes again since their is a revenue shortfall, just like cigaretts they keep on increasing since more people give up on smoking and therfore the revenue keeps decreasing , we as americans are in a downward spiral of taxing and spending like drunken sailors , since we have a society that wants the goverment to take care of them for free , it started with ss then medicad, medicare, food stamps , section 8 and another 100 programs, and now its health care , why would a normal person even try to make a legitimate living by working when he can get evreything from the goverment

Drinking wine in moderation actually has health benefits. Soon they will start taxing fresh fruits and vegetables like Israel.
