London – British Swimming Pools Imposing Muslim Dress Codes

Instead they are told that they must comply with the “modest” code of dress required by Islamic custom, with women covered from the neck to the ankles and men, who swim separately, covered from the navel to the knees.

The phenomenon runs counter to developments in France, where last week a woman was evicted from a public pool for wearing a burkini – the headscarf, tunic and trouser outfit which allows Muslim women to preserve their modesty in the water.

The 35-year-old, named only as Carole, is threatening legal action after she was told by pool officials in Emerainville, east of Paris, that she could not wear the outfit on hygiene grounds.

But across the UK municipal pools are holding swimming sessions specifically aimed at Muslims, in some case imposing strict dress codes.

Croydon council in south London runs separate one-and-a half-hour swimming sessions for Muslim men and women every Saturday and Sunday at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre.

Swimmers were told last week on the centre’s website that “during special Muslim sessions male costumes must cover the body from the navel to the knee and females must be covered from the neck to the ankles and wrists”.

There are similar rules at Scunthorpe Leisure Centre, in North Lincolnshire, where “users must follow the required dress code for this session (T-shirts and shorts/leggings that cover below the knee)”.

In Glasgow, a men-only swimming session is organised by a local mosque group at North Woodside Leisure Centre, at which swimmers must be covered from navel to knee.

At a women-only class organised by a Muslim teacher at Blackbird Leys Swimming Pool, Oxford, to encourage Muslim women to learn to swim, most participants wear “modest” outfits although normal costumes are permitted.

The dress codes have provoked an angry reaction among critics who say they encourage division and resentment between Muslims and non-Muslims, putting strain on social cohesion.

Ian Cawsey, the Labour MP for the North Lincolnshire constituency of Brigg and Goole, said: “Of course swimming pools have basic codes of dress but it should not go beyond that.

“I don’t think that in a local authority pool I should have to wear a particular type of clothes for the benefit of someone else. That’s not integration or cohesion.”

Labour MP Anne Cryer, whose Keighley, West Yorkshire constituency has a large number of Muslims, said: “Unfortunately this kind of thing has a negative impact on community relations.

“It’s seen as yet another demand for special treatment. I can’t see why special clothing is needed for what is a single-sex session.”

Muslim swimming sessions are also held at a number of state schools around the country. At Loxford School in Ilford, east London, a local Muslim group organises weekly sessions for Muslim men, with the warning that “it is compulsory for the body to be covered between the navel and the knees.

“Anyone not adhering to the dress code or rules within the pool will not be allowed to swim”.

The practice of holding special Muslim swimming sessions has led to non-Muslims being turned away.

David Toube, 39 and his five year old son Harry were last year refused entry to Clissold Leisure Centre, in Hackney, east London, after being told the Sunday morning swimming session was for Muslim men only.

Council officials later said staff had made a mistake and both Mr Toube, a corporate lawyer, and his son should have been admitted.

After discovering the rules at Thornton Heath one Croydon resident, 34-year-old Alex Craig, said: “I think it is preposterous that a council should be encouraging this type of segregation over municipal facilities.

“Surely if Muslims want to swim then they should just turn up with their modest swimwear at the same time as everyone else.”

Douglas Murray, director of the Centre for Social Cohesion, last night condemned the practice. He said: “This kind of thing is extremely divisive.

“Non-Muslims see these extremist demands as an example of Muslims wanting things to fit into their lifestyle, when there aren’t similar things organised for Hindus, Buddhists or Jews.

“It also puts moderate Muslims in an awkward position as it suggests, wrongly, that they are not devout enough, simply because they choose not to cover themselves in a shroud in a pool.”

A press officer at Croydon council, which introduced Muslim-only swimming in 2006, claimed that the wording on the website was a mistake and the dress code should be regarded as a suggestion rather than a requirement.

The website was late changed to remove the reference to the dress code.

However, an official at the leisure centre said the dress code remained compulsory.

Earlier, defending the segregation policy, a Croydon council spokesman said: “We appreciate that certain religious groups, such as Muslims, have strict rules on segregation for activities including sports, so in response to requests from the local community, we have been running these sessions at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre.”

Municipal pools shouldn’t be effectively closed to general public use to accomodate each religious. What would happen if jews also asked for their own separate swimming hours?

I remember a few years ago in England when a Chasidic group arranged for men only swimming during certain hours at a public pool. The outcry was deafening.

We have to be stupid not to see the danger of latest Muslim athorety in the vest. It’s like the are busy with knowledge of science and medical improvements and they are busy how religious we should be. We are in bad shape.

Certainly the various Islamic communities around the globe could afford to maintain their own pools and sports facilities without imposing these strictures on the public at large. Men and women swimming together???? In a pool even fully dressed???? Considered Modest???? The “modesty” of Islam never ceases to amaze me. Here in Jerusalem, most traditional Muslims cover their women in long shapeless dresses with the head and neck covered with scarves. Their husbands however, are dressed like grungy mechanics in t-shirts, blue jeans and no covered head whatsoever. These are the majority of muslim couples/families in Israel. It appears that their religiosity extends primarily to ensure that their women do not stray away, although they occasionally go down on the dirt, head uncovered sometimes on a piece of cardboard if its around hauling that rug around seems to be too much trouble, and bow towards the rock over there in saud. Doesn’t surprise me that the UK is bending over backwards to accommodate the influx of islamists into the Kingdom. Their Universities are also selling out. Shame to see a once great and mighty power ground into nothing by this religion of hate.

Uh… would we not welcome separate swimming for Jewish people? Duh. IF they want to have specific sessions why not? They’re not forcing everyone else.

First of all, i find it interesting that this page shows there to be 8 comments and yet there is only 1 showing aside from the one i am presently typing. In response to the article, all of these countries that are bowing to the moslem pressure now to be courteous are certainly headed to a very deep, dark future with them. That being said, I feel that any group having its own set of rules/codes/agendas should really consider using private venues for such activities since the legality could be said that what is good for one groups restrictions can be applied for all groups. Get it?

As long as it is certain hours, I see nothing wrong with it.

Are you all aware that in many Bible Belt communities, public pools do not allow any two-piece women’s swim suits?

It is called being respectful to the people’s sensitivity. I support it.

I once heard a speech, by an odom godol, that said the way the Muslim women dress is a kitrug for us, because some of us are not as modest in our clothing. Maybe it is also not proper for Jewish women to wear untsniudik bathing suits, even though we swim saparately.

But many pools and beaches in Israel have segregated hours (or, in the case of beaches, areas) for Haredim. If Israel decided to stop that, your readers would be in an outrage. Why is it OK for Haredim in Israel but not OK for Moslems in Britain??? The restriction/ request for modest clothing only applies to the special hours. And don’t some pools in the UK have special hours for female-only swimming? And what is different from this report and ‘Tznius’ buses in Israel? Do your readers who object to this also object to the signs in Mea Shearim asking visitors to dress modestly???

This is preposterous! As nice as it may be that the British government is willing to accommodate different ethinicities , it is unacceptable to EXclude others. It is one thing to have separate hours for men and women, including specific dress codes in SOME pools during SOME time slots, but to make a sweeping restriction on those following the national cultural styles is absolutely racist!

#12 . To Jeff. It is one thing to speak of Muslims in the U.K demanding separate hours for their recreational pleasure which I might add is State sponsored and taxation paid, which is a nation ruled by civil law which is added to the great body of common law applicable to all. it is quite another matter to speak of Eretz Yisroel the Jewish state which has a Jewish character, the semblance of which includes some concession to the Torah Observant among us, albeit crumbs and scrappings the likes of which are appallingly inadequate. Better you should compare Shariah law in Iran, Saud, Kuwait, Pakistan etc. etc. with Israel where the Islamists know how to take a firm position which is quaint at best to observe as a tourist but wholly different to those who have to live under it. Say NO to Shariah in the U.K.! The western lands are not subject to your peculiar brand of Justice. As a religious Jew, I support separate swimming but I wouldn’t swim with them! They and their children have caused enough harm in the world and it is time to take a united stand against the gravest of impositions.

    Ha!

They think they are “SO” Tznius?

The Swim-Suite is Unkosher for frum yidden (if they can be seen by men while swimming like this) since the bottom of her foot is completely exposed!

    Mima-Nafshach:

If a Jewish women swims in an area where she will not be seen by men, at all, it would then be OK even with far less covering of a standard swim-suite.

If a Jewish women swims in an area where she can bee seen, by men, it would be non-kosher, even in this Goyishe Levush of the Muslims, because the bottom of the feet show.

this is absolutely wrong if these swimming areas are public.
if they are private that is ok.

there is one big very big difference between the Muslims and frum Jews even my beloved cheradiem that some think I hate.

The Jews do not ask (at least in any country besides Israel) that the government and or people should comply with them in most cases, as opposed to Muslims who want other countries to comply to their religious needs.
Even more troubling it that a survey was taken in England and asked Muslims, regular every day Muslims not the fanatics, if they would want England to adopt sharai law over 50% said yes. That is very scary, they are not looking to live there it looks like they are there to take over.

Just a question and see if i can get a straight answer

Why is what the Muslims are asking for any different when many where up in arms about the bike lanes in Williamsburg it sounds the same to me?
