Sao Paulo - Outrage, As Charedi Jew Humiliated, Cut Off 'Beard Peyos' By Brazilian Authorities [video] |
|
Now he claims to be traumatized.
"I was very ill, wondering what the Germans did to the Jews 60 years ago. And that is what they did to me now in Brazil" he said.
The engineer spent three days detained at the Federal Police, in Guarulhos Airport and then was transferred to a Provisional Detention Center (PDC) .. He says that in the town, after passing a screening, he was the victim of religious intolerance.
He says that a jailer threw on the floor his yarmulke a small hat mandatory for all Orthodox Jew.
He then began talking with a colleague who was on the side, laughing at me. Then they said 'Heil Hitler'
The engineer says that, after insulting him, the guards found in his luggage two religious objects, the tallit and tefillin, and threw on the floor of the accessories that are considered sacred.
When a person engages with the tallit, this time, he is reminding you that has to fulfill the 613 commandments of God. When a Jew puts on tefillin in the morning, is his connection with God - explains Rabbi Richard Tamezgui.
But the worst was yet to come.
The jailer asked me how long I had a beard. I said that since it had started to grow. He replied, then, that from that day, I will not have no beard.
The engineer says they put him in a chair, handcuffed hands and feet. Then, his beard was shaved completely.
- It is on our Torah, which is our bible, which is banned you destroy part of his beard. According to Kabbalah, the mystical part of Judaism through the beard, we receive divine blessings explains the rabbi.
They also cut off the curls [Pies] he kept since birth, and symbolizing devotion to God.
In some camps, the humiliation they did with the Orthodox Jews was to cut his beard and mock them. I see this as an anti-Semitic act, an isolated act but an act of disrespect and humiliation to him says the rabbi.
I feel a great shame. I sit in my house without leaving for a year until my beard grow says the engineer.
According to the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration, the prisoners are treated in a standardized manner and have the beard and hair cut. With respect to American, the Secretariat also explained that his beard was very long, at the navel.
In a statement, the Secretariat reported that there was no physical aggression, moral or psychological, but that will investigate the case properly.
It is a standard procedure, but that it contains exceptions. These agents have practiced some crimes, such as abuse of authority and certainly the crime of racism, and practice to encourage prejudice against religion, belief and ethnicity said the lawyer representing the engineer, Augusto de Arruda Botelho.
This is the same opinion of Judge Sergio Mazina Martins, human rights expert and president of the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences (IBCCrim).
You want to prevent the individual to have a certain beard, a certain hair, when in fact it makes him part of their culture and their own religious beliefs points.
Now released, the engineer uses fake beard. He hopes the court will decide whether to wait for the progress of the process in Germany, where he says live.
I want to go home. I hope they do not do this anymore to Jews who want to keep his beard - he says.

They should never treat an orthodox jew or anyone from any religion with such intolerance. I'll reserve judgement as to whether this was stupidity or blatant anti-semitisim. At the same time, for this frum yid to stay home from his job as an engineer"for a year" to grow back his beard (or walk around with a fake beard, the article is a bit unclear) and then also claim he was traumatized by having his beard shaved is also a bit extreme. It sounds like this person needs some counseling by his rebbe or a a professional.

If true, (he was arrested for having jewels, diamonds and watches undeclared ) this is disgusting and hopefully Brazil will get to the bottom of this.
However, I am a little suspicious or unconformable that he is saying this is like Germany during the holocaust, Maybe is is making more than it is to get off. I do not know the law in Brazil to say if that is standard to cut off a beard.
He is ashamed of the beard being cut off, but not that he was caught trying to bring in (smuggle) undisclosed jewelery, Interesting

This story is nuts. The guy decides to smuggle across an international border. He is caught smuggling. Surprise, surprise, he is put in jail for smuggling. In jail, surprise, surprise, there are guards who are not well versed in orthodox Jewish practice (maybe this is the 1st frum goniff they have caught) and they apparently forcibly shave his beard, and perhaps his peyos. Guess what? This is what happens to criminals when they are in jail.
The chutzpah of this thief comparing himself to truly frum Yidden who were tortured and died al kiddush Hashem at the hands of the Germans, yimach shemam, is unbelievable.
One way to lower one's chances of being imprisoned and humiliated is to obey the law and not smuggle.

We all agree, but that is not the issue. The issue is the anti-Semitism which is the norm in this world, and goes virtually unchecked.
There are two issues; one is smuggling (which is NOT the issue here) and the other is the treatment of a Jew in a foreign prison.
If we let this pass (because who told him to smuggle) then tomorrow this prison attendant will attack a Jew on the Street, and it might be YOU.

Throwing your Yarmulke on the floor is normal practice? Laughing at a prisoner and saying “Heil Hitler” is normal practice. It does remind us of Nazi Germany where they cut the Peyos and beards with glee. There are many pictures extant today; which does remind us of Nazi Germany. He is RIGHT with comparing them to Nazi Germany.
It’s very interesting that because he is an Orthodox Jew who is charged with a crime, automatically what his inquisitors do becomes justified. Can anyone please explain.

Sure there are antisemites out there but as far as this story goes, DON'T DO THE CRIME you won't end up in jail, there is abetter chance the staff in the hilton will treat you a bit nicer than the staff at the PDC

Aug 24, 2009 at 04:43 PM Nuts Says:
No one wishes to justify the actions of anti-semites, but the mussar haskel here is to refrain from committing crimes which result in one being imprisoned. We simply have had too many cases wherein people who dress as orthodox Jews commit crimes, and then complain when they have to deal with the low lifes who run prisons and inhabit them.
Any tape or sefer from Rav Avigdor Miller ztl would doubtless contain advice not to be stupid. Read for example the sefer, Rabbi Avigdor Miller Speaks, by Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen, Vol 2, the last chapter--on common sense.
I maintain that to compare these low life prison guards to Nazis is problematic, and for this person to somehow compare himself to the millions of innocent Yidden, including many frum Yidden, humiliated and tortured and killed by the German barbarians simply for being Jewish (not for committing any crime) is a bit much.

The guards who did this were 100% wrong and should be punished. What they did was an insult to every yid. However, I have no sympathy for a criminal like this. He asked for it by trying to smuggle in diamonds.

There is a TV show called "locked up abroad", prisons in some countries are notaries I can not imagine Brazil should be a prison like the USA.
The question is, is the story true or is he trying to get out of a sentence.
An independent agency should be done, if he is right the guards should be fired and punished. However, if he made this up he should be charged with something or time added to his sentence if he is found guilty

While I personally tend to believe much or all of this happened to this alleged thief, I should mention that all too often we frum Jews are too gullible and too willing to accept whatever someone who is dressed like a frum Yid says. There are thieves and liars among us. Someone who is smuggling across an international border may not be the paragon of moral virtue.
We simply have to stop bifurcating our approach to morality. We should begin to expect that someone who wishes to be considered a frum Yid has to act that way bein adam lchavero (interactions between people) as well as bein adam lmakom (ritual laws). We should not call someone who is a thief 'frum', especially someone who has created a chillul Hashem.
Indeed, these goons may have removed his Yiddish appearance, but by his public complaints in the media, this fellow may have compounded the chillul Hashem he created by international smuggling! Now, thousands will read about the 'Jewish rabbi smuggler'v and think that we frum Jews think it is acceptable to smuggle across international borders!

I guess you don't live in the same world I live in. In my world anti-Semitism IS the norm. Only the tip of the iceberg is displayed publicly, and if you work with professionals they professionally hide their anti-Semitism, but when push comes to shove there is so much hatred out there that it’s really scary.
Look, I’ve been around and seen much of the world, outwardly AND inwardly and this is my experience.
Not withstanding what I wrote, there are many genuine good people out there who don’t hate us, and equally there are many people who don’t care one way or another about Jews and find us as a curiosity. But that shouldn’t fool anyone into a false sense of security. History, both ancient and contemporary has taught us to be on guard at all times. I know people who carry their passport on them. That might be a bit extreme, but on second thought, maybe not.

I'll tell you what he/she meant by "cold-blooded".
Your usual comments on stories like these display a lack of any feelings for your fellow Jews. If you would only display “no sympathy” it would be bad enough, but it is “antipathy” which is felt in your comments; that’s cold-bloodedness. Why would you want another Jew who you do not know, nor do you really know his crime, nor do you know anything about him, yet you get pleasure seeing him sit in jail?
In all likelihood you are not cold blooded at all but are trying to prove something to yourself. Maybe we can Teitch; Hoicheiach Tochiach, prove you shall prove yourself, Ess Amisecho, to your brother (instead of to yourself).

“ I'll tell you what he/she meant by "cold-blooded".

I take no pleasure in seeing anyone in prison. However, that does not mean that I have to feel sympathy for him. I feel sympathy for Shalit. I believe that those who choose a life of crime, also choose to accept the consequences of that life of crime. I have only so much money, tefilos, and sympathy to go around in a meaningful way. I would rather put it into those who are in pain through no fault of their own (like this criminal's family who he abandoned to commit crimes) and deserving of those things from me.
