Antioch, CA – Held for 18 Years, Kidnap Victim’s Nightmare Story Unfolds

Phillip Garrido, left, and his wife, Nancy Garrido, are in custody in the 1991 kidnapping of an 11-year-old girl.Antioch, CA – A little girl snatched on her way to school was kept hidden from the world behind a series of fences, sheds and tents for nearly two decades, even giving birth to her suspected abductor’s children in the suburban backyard compound less than 200 miles from the home where she was taken.

Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was 11 when she was abducted from a South Lake Tahoe street in 1991, was taken directly to the house and sheltered from the world in a secret, leafy backyard, investigators said Thursday.

Her abductor, investigators said, raped her and fathered two children with her, the first when Jaycee was about 14. Those children, both girls now 11 and 15, also were kept hidden away in the backyard compound behind the Antioch home.

Police press conference on solved case.
“None of the children have ever been to school, they’ve never been to a doctor,” El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said. “They were kept in complete isolation in this compound.”

Even a parole agent who visited 58-year-old Phillip Garrido’s home didn’t have an inkling about the hidden compound, Kollar said. Garrido is a registered sex offender on federal parole for rape and kidnapping convictions.

“The way the house is set up, the way the backyard is set up, you could walk through the backyard, walk through the house, and never know,” Kollar said.
These undated handout photos show Jaycee Dugard, who was kidnapped in 1991 at the age of 11 from near her home in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
But neighbors said there were clues even before a parole agent on Wednesday noticed Dugard, now 29, who accompanied Garrido, his wife and the children to a parole office.

Neighbor Diane Doty said she could see the tents and often heard children playing in the backyard, the corner of which abuts her own backyard. She said she even suspected the children lived in the tents, but her husband said she should leave the family alone.

“I asked my husband, ‘Why is he living in tents?”‘ she said. “And he said, ‘Maybe that is how they like to live.”‘

Garrido is being held for investigation of various kidnapping and sex charges. Authorities said his 54-year-old wife, Nancy Garrido, was with him during the kidnapping in South Lake Tahoe and she also has been arrested.

Jim Watson, a retired El Dorado police sergeant who was the lead investigator for 14 years was elated to hear the news. “I can finally say the case is closed,” he told CBS’ “The Early Show” Friday.

Watson said the investigation endured several ups and downs as suspects were named and then cleared.

The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature. Officers said he was acting suspiciously toward the children. They questioned him and did a background check, determined that he was a parolee and informed his parole officer.
An FBI agent inspects the car that was reportedly used in the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard as it is being impounded from the home of 58-year-old Phillip Garrido and his 54-year-old wife Nancy Garrido in Antioch, Calif.
Garrido was ordered to appear for a parole meeting and arrived Wednesday with Dugard, who identified herself as “Allissa,” his wife, and two children. During questioning, corrections officials said he admitted to kidnapping Dugard.

Investigators said he did not yet have an attorney.

Dugard was reunited Thursday with her mother as her family learned that their blue-eyed, blonde ponytailed little girl had spent most of her life in captivity. Police said they had no evidence that she had ever reached out to anyone beyond the compound walls.

“She was in good health, but living in a backyard for the past 18 years does take its toll,” Kollar said.

The backyard compound had electricity from extension cords and a rudimentary outhouse and shower, “as if you were camping,” Kollar said.

Authorities said they do not know if Garrido also abused his daughters, but they are investigating.

Dugard’s stepfather, who witnessed her abduction and was a longtime suspect in the case, said he was overwhelmed by the news after doing everything he could to help find her.

“It broke my marriage up. I’ve gone through hell. I mean I’m a suspect up until yesterday,” a tearful Carl Probyn, 60, told The Associated Press at his home in Orange, California. Garrido’s compound was located in Antioch, a city of 100,000 about 275 kilometers from the Dugard family home in South Lake Tahoe.

People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

“In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him,” said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburg, California, who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido’s printing business for the last decade.
The backyard of the home, as seen from the neighbors yard, of Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy Garrido. Dugard was allegedly held in this backyard with her two daughters who were fathered by Garrido after she was abducted.
Three times in recent years, Garrido arrived at Allen’s showroom with two “cute little blond girls” in tow, he said.

In April 2008, Garrido registered a corporation called Gods Desire at his home address, according to the California Secretary of State. During recent visits to the showroom, Garrido would talk about quitting the printing business to preach full time and gave the impression he was setting up a church, Allen said.

“He rambled. It made no sense,” he said.

In a blog that appears to have been maintained by Garrido, he wrote that he had hired a private investigator to verify his ability to speak to people using only his mind. In an “affadavit” posted there, he said he had the ability to “control sound with my mind and have developed a device for others to witness this phenomena.”

Garrido gave a rambling, sometimes incoherent phone interview to KCRA-TV from the El Dorado County jail Thursday in which he said he had not admitted to a kidnapping and that he had turned his life around since the birth of his first daughter 15 years ago.

“I tell you here’s the story of what took place at this house, and you’re going to be absolutely impressed. It’s a disgusting thing that took place from the end to the beginning. But I turned my life completely around,” he said.

In addition to kidnapping allegations, court records showed both Garridos were being held for investigation of rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, and kidnapping someone under 14 with intent to rape. Phillip Garrido also faces allegations of sexual penetration.

The AP, as a matter of policy, avoids identifying victims of alleged sexual abuse by name in its news reports. However, Dugard’s disappearance had been known and reported for nearly two decades, making impossible any effort to shield her identity now.

Garrido has a long rap sheet dating back to the 1970s.

He was convicted of kidnapping a 25-year-old woman whom he snatched from a South Lake Tahoe parking lot, handcuffed, tied down and held in a mini-warehouse in Reno, according to a November 1976 story in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

He also has a conviction for rape by force or fear stemming from the same incident, and was paroled from a Nevada state prison in 1988, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

In 1991, police believe he was trolling for victims in South Lake Tahoe in a Ford Granada when he snatched Dugard from a bus stop outside her home. The case attracted national attention and was featured on TV’s “America’s Most Wanted,” which broadcast a composite drawing of a suspect seen in the car.

Her stepfather said he saw someone reach out and grab her before the car sped away.

“As soon as I saw the door fly open, the driver’s door, I jumped on my mountain bike and I tried to get to the top of the hill, but I had no energy,” Probyn recalled. “I rode back down and yelled at my neighbor, 911!”

Probyn said his wife, from whom he is separated, was devastated by the kidnapping. He said for 10 years after the crime, she would take a week off work at Christmas and on the anniversary of the abduction and spend the time crying at home.

Jaycee Lee Dugard has retained custody of her children and was staying at a Bay area motel, authorities said.

The perpetrator was a man who posed as very religious. He fooled many. He did not fool Hashem.

    Morals of the story:

    1) There is pure, unadulterated evil in the world, and sometimes it walks on two legs and poses as a religious person. A corollary of this is that pedophiles almost always are incorrigible. They almost never do ‘teshuva.’ They almost always have strong urges to commit more crimes against children.

    2) Teach your children how to be ‘street smart’ and to avoid dangerous situations (although this very rare kidnapping apparently happened out of the blue, without warning, and there is nothing the kid or her stepfather could apparently do to have prevented it). Children can also learn how to fight back. Even an 11 year old can learn how to punch, kick, bite, etc. It may slow down or repell a kidnapper. Reportedly, as reported on VIN, the little Hispanic girl being kidnapped by a pedophile dressed in ‘frum’ clothing knew what to do, and may have saved herself from tremendous harm.

    3) Be grateful for what you have. Hug your kids. Hug your spouse. Treat your kids to something without any special reason, this weekend. Thank Hashem for His protection of our children.

The perpetrator was a prior sex offender who was released and committed the same and or similar crimes, as all sex offenders inevitably do, all go back to their old ways.

    The Lesson:

There is NO CURE for sex offenders – they are all repeat offenders and they always will be repeat offenders.

That’s why it is so outragouse when yeshivos don’t report such offenders to the police.

We must remember that fact, when our leaders want to cover up and not arrest seemingly “frum sex offenders”.

The cover-up and lack or arrest results in more casualties to all our frum children in all our Yeshivos and Girls Schools fo all future generations as in the “Rabbi” Kolko , Torah Temima case.

This is another reminder how bad Agudah is for it’s lobby to not prolong the statute of limitations to arrest these offenders.

Agudah must wake up and smell the coffee!

How do they know the ages of the two girls if they were born in the shed?
I think Nancy is also a victim, it may come out so.
I also believe a death sentance would be best for him, & the girls, it will place a closure on the case.
    A fascinating Elul story.
The stepfather vindicated over world TV & proven a rightious good man, after all the allegations & suspicions, & pain & suffereing, he will probably be reunited with his wife, stepdauhgter.
The other guy hidding his horrible sins, was eventualy caught & exposed to the whole world.
    What a limud.

Jaycee was about 5th, 6th grade when it happened. She was able to count and do math. Until she tells us how she reacted at first we won’t know for sure but she must have been counting. She’d know how old her children were since they weren’t taken from her apparently. She was allowed to be their mother. The Garridos probably convinced her the early part was an “adventure.” She identified herself as his wife when he was apprehended. She was probably brainwashed into thinking she was and it was ok. We just have to wait until more details come out. The Undersheriff, Kollar, said she was in good physical shape. Someone know how to deliver those babies. Garrido apparently took his daughters out when he went into town. He even had a good business. None of which makes up for her being taken from her family, isolated socially and eventually abused sexually.
I agree that Nancy was probably an earlier victim. Just look at her.

I’d be a bit cautious about the stepfather, however. Why is the home referred to as the “Duggard home” and not the “Probyn Home?” Is Jaycee’s Mom the one with the money? There must have been issues in that marriage before this. He witnessed the abduction then “jumped on his mountain bike but … didn’t have the energy?” Ever hear of adrenalin rush in these situations? He was only 42 and used to mountain biking apparently. Something there doesn’t ring true. He had to know his abilities and that he couldn’t catch a car. A normal person grabs the phone first. Now he’s a victim too? Lost his marriage but nothing about what Jaycee lost. Or his wife. He states she spent two weeks a year crying but does so with no empathy. Cold. I don’t trust him and I won’t be surprised if it was a set up to get an “inconvenient” step-daughter out of his hair so he could have a second chance with his wife (and her money?). But maybe it didn’t go as hoped so the child was never “ransomed” as originally planned. Of course if he was a suspect, he’d try to “help.” Garrido had a record. It’s not too hard to find someone like that to do a job if you really want to.

Garrido should have been hanged or fried for the kidnap-rape offense. Who in the hell made the decision to release him from the life sentence? This case is filled with judgement lapses all around. From the stepfather who casually watches his daughter from two blocks away (what was wrong walking her to the bus stop?) to the lapse of law and parole enforcement keeping track of a registered sex offender living in plain sight. Good grief!!! Law enforcement and parole officers performed unannounced visits to the Antioch home but did not inspect the home or backyard? Can we say ‘out-of-court’ settlements for the Duggard family? Lord knows they will need it for the psychotherapy treatments for Jaycee and her children. Jaycee was in captivity over 3 times longer than John McCain! Gerrido and his wife should be put to death and rot in hell.

Don’t blame the step-father he did all he could & identified the car & the lady kidnapper.
This man was a crazy in an electrical bracelet on parole. Who would want to go near someone like that. On top of all most people would be sure of getting caught when doing that, there were enough reasons to get caught here.See CBS, reports for that.
The car the stepfather identified was compounded, 18 years later, he obviously heard on the news they were looking for his car, & hid it. Most people let their 11 year old kids walk to school bus stops themselves, all the other girls did, until that day.
Personally I got rid of my cell phone 8 years ago, but 18 years ago, very few if any had cellphones, so the fact he didn’t call himself, is because he couldn’t.
They didn’t have Amber alert in those days & so the police couldn’t find the car.I would lay off the stepfather, I think he has suffered enough, his wife went nuts, & probably suspected him, which over time caused rift, and the ultimate was fallout mistrust & hate, which may yet be patched up, with help, si nischt fin unserer so no machzir grushosoi here.

I think most of this happens because our system is mess up once someone rapes, kidnapps or dose anything indicent with a child they shod be put away for life these people are sick and always commit a second offense they shod not b able to live a normal life after they have distored someone else with there sick sexual tenacies, they dont deserve a second chance he got one and look wat he did with it.

I hope that Jaycee Dugard will eventually tell her story to help other children avoid this same situation. What I don’t understand is why Jaycee never asked for help during those times when she went out in public with her kidnapper. Was she brainwashed? I don’t understand. Didn’t she want to see her mother again? Maybe she was threatened with harm to her children? It seems like she should have known somewhere inside her that all of this was really sick and wrong. I think that the public needs to understand more about this type of brainwashing from a victim’s standpoint. Also, are there no images at all of Jaycee when she was found?
