Hawaii – Honolulu Seeking to Fine Bus Riders With Offensive Body Odor

Honolulu Bus file photoHawaii – Stinky city bus riders soon could get soaked. The Honolulu City Council is considering a bill that would impose up to a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail for public transit passengers convicted of being too smelly.

The bill will be heard Thursday in committee. It would make it illegal to have “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system.”

It doesn’t matter if it’s body odor or offensive fumes that emanates from clothes, personal belongings or animals.

Councilmen Rod Tam and Nestor Garcia co-sponsored the anti-odor bill.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii says it is concerned with laws that are inherently vague, which opens the door to discriminatory enforcement based on an officer’s individual prejudices.

I don’t want to smell anyone else’s stink either but I think a law like this is ridiculous. Do they fine laborers who work an 18 hour day in the hot sun and have to take public transportation to get home? How about someone who has to take a sick pet to the veterinarian and doesn’t have a car?

Wouldn’t it be easier to just deny them a bus ride? A “you smell, you walk” policy instead of JAIL.

And what would be the criteria for being guilty ? Will they have odor probes like the gas company has ? This is a good purim story .

Finally! I don’t like the smell of nicotine left on people/clothes… so finally I can get all those people who reek of smoke arrested! About time I’m saved from their dangerous odor! Oh, and those evil onion eaters, I can have them locked up for bad breath too! I would hate to be unsafe because of their halitosis.
