Washington - Obama: 'sin tax' on Sodas Is Food For Thought, Despite Gov. Paterson's Failed Proposal

Washington - Gov. Paterson’s proposal to tax soda in New York fizzled, but President Obama believes it may be time to pop a similar sin tax on the nation.

The President, in an interview with Men’s Health magazine released yesterday, said he thought taxing soda and other sugary drinks is worth putting on the table as Congress debates health care reform.

“It’s an idea that we should be exploring,” the president said. “There’s no doubt that our kids drink way too much soda. And every study that’s been done about obesity shows that there is as high a correlation between increased soda consumption and obesity as just about anything else.”

Obama is floating the idea seven months after a storm of protest forced poll-challenged Gov. Paterson to drop his plans for an 18% tax on soda and other sugary drinks.

Despite that debacle, congressional lawmakers have considered soda taxes as one way to cover the cost of revamping the nation’s health care system, estimated to eat up much as $1 trillion over the next decade.

But Obama - who works out six days a week and keeps a bowl of apples in the Oval Office - has been largely mum on the controversial topic, at least until now.

As in Paterson’s case, Obama’s comments drew the immediate wrath of industry and consumer-choice groups yesterday.

“The tax code should not be used as a method for social engineering, and that’s what this is,” said J. Justin Wilson, the senior research analyst for the Center for Consumer Freedom, a group funded in part by the food and beverage industry. “It smacks of the regulation that government imposed on tobacco, but soda is not tobacco.”

Obama acknowledged that the idea could lead to charges that Uncle Sam is trying to dictate personal diets, but he hinted the trade-off may be worth it.

“Look, people’s attitude is that they don’t necessarily want Big Brother telling them what to eat or drink, and I understand that,” Obama said.

“It is true, though, that if you wanted to make a big impact on people’s health in this country, reducing things like soda consumption would be helpful.”

What a joke, after what happened to Van Jones one of his advisers, shows how incompetent he is, all he can think of is more taxes while unemployment is close to 10%, can't he think of anything creative that will create real jobs.

This is absurd, next they'll want to tax us for sneezing. What are we not being taxed for. Seriously if anyone can tell me what I'm not being taxed for I would really like to know. It seems that America is far from a free country. I keep getting this feeling that every time I turn around I see uncle SAM with his hand in my pocket.

its a great idea to at least consider. it was a great accomplishment a few year.
it was a great accomplishment couple of years ago when mayor bloomberg and bill clinton successfully got all soda pop soft drinks out of the new york public school system and replaced them with snaples drinks and machines which was all about the childrens' health. thats what ths potntial tax would be about. health. its right there in his quote, children's health. before you jup, read the thought. no one is telling you not to drink liquid sugar all day, the same way no one tells you not to pump nictoine into your yeshivishe white shirted lungs.

You can't tell people what to drink, true. But who said we could place stumbling blocks in front of blind people? How many New Yorkers have quit smoking since the taxes were levied?

Are you saying all overweight people are considered blind when it comes to their choice of food?? Isn't that a wee bit condescending? Are fat people infantile? I think everybody has to take personal responsibility for what they put in their mouths and I don't need the government telling me what to eat. If you need mouth control, get a muzzle.

I drink my share of soda, but I would be all for them adding a tax onto soda. Make it like the deposit fee, a nickel a bottle. Nationally I am sure that alone would add up to a fortune.

To all of you who continually vote for the communist-like 600% tax on cigarettes... now it is your turn to pay. It is YOU, the communist voter who enabled our government to impose ridiculous taxes. With so many people quitting smoking in NY as a result, where do you think the money will now come from? It will come from YOU. Whether it is taxes on soda or any other "unhealthy" food, it is the communist voters in places like NY that have allowed the government to do this.

Congratulations NY, you are now exporting your communist ideas to the rest of America. Forget Texas, it is NY that should secede and take its communist ideas with it.

If any soda needs to be taxed, it is diet soda. The aspartame in diet soda is much more dangerous than sugar. Sugar is natural and healthy, and it has been ubiquitous in people's diets for all of history. Non-sugar substitutes like aspartame have been found to contribute to obesity and disease much more than sugar has. Regulating certain kinds of foods or drinks because they contain sugar would be arbitrary interference by the government. We can regulate our own sugar intake, thank you very much.

What is the diff between your twisted agenda and Obama's??? Nothing!

There is NOTHING wrong with Aspartame. If you are allergic, DONT use it! This is no diff than a diabetic not being allowed sugar.

I think Obama is making a huge mistake. I acknowledge the fact that we are a big country, but taxing soda isn't going to change that. Stick it to the parents of overweight children, not the wallets of the rest of america. Even if this thing does go through, it won't stop a thing. People will find alternate methods of consuming sugar, like candy or baked goods.

If the reason for the "sin tax" is obesity in america, the tax would have to be imposed on ALL sugary foods. That would not go down very well. With anyone.Because, I agree with anonymous above, if you only tax soda, people will just find a different way to consume their sugar, because nowadays, its in just about everything. The real issue is the aspartame in diet sodas. It is just as addictive or more than nicotine, i would know, every week my father goes through a 24 pack of diet coke. I would agree more with a tax on diet soda alone.

No one is on this planet to stay we all are just passing through so live your life the way you want and enjoy it, its not going to last forever. That said there are too many people anyway, so eat drink and be merry. If everyone lives to be 100 we will have more problems with medicare, housing etc. Stop trying to make the world a utopia, it's not going to work anyway. Big government is ruining America.
