Jerusalem – 30 Palestinians Join Ichud Hatzalah Rescue Service

Jerusalem – Less than five minutes after the woman from Jerusalem’s Mea She’arim quarter put down the phone, a paramedic from United Hatzalah was at her door.

He wore the familiar orange vest with the logo of United Hatzalah, but his Arab accent made her suspicious. She had expected him to be ultra-Orthodox. Unfazed, the paramedic reassured her, and she let him examine her husband, who was having a heart attack, and save his life.

He told her he was one of 30 Arab volunteers who recently joined the Haredi Emergency Medical Services organization. The reason he was able to respond so quickly, he explained, is because he worked in a metalwork shop in Mea She’arim, although he lived in East Jerusalem.

The 30 Arab volunteers yesterday received their graduation certificates and new vests with the organization’s logo, at a festive ceremony.

United Hatzalah responds to medical emergencies around the country. Most of the organization’s 1,500 volunteers are Haredim but their ranks now also include two Arab physicians from the Old City and paramedics from the Old City, Beit Safafa, Jabal Mukkaber, Ras al-Amud, Silwan and other East Jerusalem neighborhoods.

All new paramedics received EMT kits. Some also were given the motorscooters with the United Hatzalah markings that have become a Haredi status symbol and enable volunteers to quickly reach people in need.

The volunteers, who are on call around the clock, provide medical care until a Magen David Adom ambulance arrives.

“These volunteers are saints,” United Hatzalah Chief Coordinator Eli Beer says about the Palestinian EMTs. “They practically risk their lives and give their all.”

“United Hatzalah focuses on saving life, whether the rescuer is Arab or Jewish,” the chairman of United Hatzalah, Zeev Kashash, says.

Murad Alian, a EMT from Beit Safafa, who along with Beer initiated the project to include Palestinians in the organization, says that in East Jerusalem the need for volunteers is critical. Not only are the closest Magen David Adom clinics far away, but sometimes rescue teams must wait for a Border Police escort. Then they waste more precious time searching for the address: GPS is of little use when there are no street names or house numbers.

“People ask us we’re doing with the Haredi Jews and their sidelocks, but Arabs and Haredim are similar,” Alian says. “We know them well and get along with them amazingly. And as far as the Arab community is concerned it’s easier when an EMT is with a neutral, community-affiliated organization, dedicated to saving lives, rather than the government.”

All United Hatzalah volunteers are trained and qualified by Israeli medical organizations and institutions, and most of them have been MDA volunteers for years. Alian says that years of working at MDA in Jerusalem have made him an expert in Jewish religious law.

He knows, for example, that some ultra-Orthodox are stricter than others and will not open a pill bottle on the Sabbath unless the medicine is an issue of life or death. In these cases the Arab volunteers do it for them.

Beer sees the inclusion of the Palestinian volunteers in a religious context. “I see Murad from Beit Safafa sitting with a settler volunteer from Kiryat Arba and a secular volunteer from Herzliya and say to myself that the days of the Messiah have come,” he says.

Fifteen of the new recruits were put on the rota for weekend duties in Haredi communities and settlements over the weekend.

Thus they find themselves sitting around the Shabbat dinner table with families, sampling Jewish cuisine and learning Jewish ways.
“Cholent and gefilte fish are okay, but no more than that,” says Alian. “No need to get carried away.”

This is a bad idea. They can not be trusted and we should avoid working with them.

Hatzalh is a source of pride to all of us. With all the negative publicity we chareidim are getting lately let’s share our volunteer services with our non jewish neighb ors. There’s is no better PR and kiddush hashem as when a jew with a yarmulka shows up to help during an emergency.

    Two Points:

#1)Although, at first glance, this news may seem to give us good feelings, on second thought though, it sends chills up my spine thinking of all the damage which can g-d forbid come out of all this. I hope they know what they’re doing. I also wonder if they discussed this and got the approval of some leading Gedolim.

#2) What connection, if any, does this have with the report about the Arabs joining the ZAKA group? Isn’t it a bit funny to have both groups suddenly decide on having Arabs join them? Just wondering…

Ah, the bigots are already out in force. All Arabs are bad. Yidden are saintly, goyim are wicked, end of conversation. Give it another hour or so and I’ll bet there’ll be several “Eisav soineh l’Yaakov” statements. So predictable, and so depressing. I love Voz Iz Neias, but many of the comments from readers make me ashamed to be a frum Jew.

The racism expressed in some of these comments is very discouraging. Anyone who has been a patient in an Israeli hospital knows that Israel relies on caring, competent Arab physicians and nurses.

Last week a Muslim doctor refused to treat a patient named Kahane. At least he makes sense in accordance with his thinking.
We should also make some sense -and not take such risky
    chances.

To Yidden life is very precious and valuable unlike many muslims who firmly believe that death in the cause of ‘jihad’ (holy war i.e. against the Jew) overrides their own lives. So yes, the question remains why would any arab want to save a jew. Does he suddenly believe in getting ‘Olam Habbo’ for doing so.

At a time of stress, having an Arab respond would definitely make me quite uncomfortable. Can you imagine how it would feel when they respond to a terrorist attack? I would definitely not trust them at such a time.

Call me racist, but human nature is what it is. If people of a certain religion have a strong history of hurting other people, then you can’t blame anyone for being wary of anyone belonging to that religion. Anyone who proclaims not to feel that way, is just a bleeding liberal and can’t be honest with themselves.

I think this is amazing! Its hard to believe maybe even a miracle but its wonderful that there are Moslems willing to work alongside Charedim to save lives. I’m sure they were well vetted and background checks were made. Believe it or not there are many Moslems who are good and want a better world! Stop the racism. Stop the bigotry.

How about Christians? How many Christians have murdered jews, and yet you completely ignore that and choose to focus on the good ones. The reason why youre all being so negative are because the majority of you are non-sephardic/mizrachi and you have no experience living amongst these people. Thus, you are much more likely to stereotype and make make prejudice comments. This is not what the Torah teaches us. Open your eyes.

sometimes peace starts with a little thing.

In addition if the Hatzalah mainly goes the heridie areas chances are less that they will attack. Most attacks are in the secular area when is the last time a bomb went off in meir shorim?

For those who bring up the example of the Arab who was responsible for the terror attack at Mercaz Harav, you should also consider the counterexamples of the numerous Arab employees in every single hospital in Israel. No exceptions–all the hospitals employ Arabs–as doctors, nurses, and in every single other position. If you don’t like Arabs treating you–don’t go to a hospital in Israel.

If you don’t like Hatzola hiring Arabs–go work there yourselves.

And for those who wish examples of Jews killing Arabs in terror attacks–they do exist. Need I name names?

11.As a medic in United Hatzalah I would like to point out that all steps were taken with close consultation and advice of our Gedolim and lehavdil security experts who have given this project their support. The Gedolim were happy to have United Hatzalah field non-jewish workers who already work in hospitals, clinics and ambulances to help minimize unnecesasary chillul shabbos and yom tov. The security experts pointed out that United Hatzalah is not adding any further layer of risk because as noted they already are working in these and related fields. The already have been turning up in peoples homes as medics with other ambulance services, handymen and even doctors. In Israel today the bus driver, doctor and even police officer is likely to be an Arab. Our security comes from proper hishtadlus as per the advise of the gedolim and bitachon in Hashem.

As much I want to see this partnership succeed for Tikkun Olam’s sake and a Chidush Hashem, I instinctively don’t trust Arabs. Everything they touch can be turned into a terrorist act. It’s only a matter of time before a suicide bomber dressed as in a Hatzalah uniform goes flying into a crowd on a Hatzalah motorcycle. Arabs don’t care how many of each other they kill as long as they take one Jew along.
