Kiryas Joel, NY - Chasidic Diamond Industry, Community Leader Passes Away |
|
Born in Israel, Mr. Banda, a Satmar Chosid, resided in the United States since 1964. Starting out the diamond industry as a diamond cutter, he followed in the footsteps of his father. He dealt in polished goods with a specialty in fancy colored goods and was an acknowledged expert in both large stones and colored stones of all sizes.
Most significantly, he served as president of the prestigious, influential Diamond Dealers Club, bringing that body into the modern era with the introduction of several major Internet-based systems. He was an institution in New York’s Diamond District, centered on 47th Street, where he worked for over 30 years.
In his native Satmar Chasidic community, Mr. Banda was known as an icon of philanthropy who used his G-d-given abundance to be among the first to support the now-legendary Hatzolah organization in its infancy. He was equally known for giving substantial amounts of charity, and also ran for mayor of Kiryas Joel in 2005.
Mr. Banda is survived by his wife, 10 children, close to 40 grandchildren, and a grieving community.
The levya will be held tonight in the Village of Kiryas Joel at 11:30 PM

Why would they schedule the lavayah of such a chusheve yid for midnight motzi shabbos when many who might want to come will not attend. Couldn't they wait until Sunday morning or were all the facilities already reserved

What a pity - he had a major heart attack this summer that left him comatose for weeks. Then miraculously we heard that he awoke and was slowly recovering. What happened now? What a pity - such a nice person. BDE

BD"E. He was a true example of a special, wonderful beloved yid. In the village where he lived, if one can say that about anyone, it says more than stam azoi. He died on shabbos and also on erev rosh chodesh, he had to be something special.

Are you serious??? Who can't make it by midnight when the zman is 7:25???? And why wait? How about considering Kvod Hames? And do you know what it says how it feels for the Niftar to wait till his 'Kvura'??? Why should the niftar wait in pain for someone that can't make it???

Obviously, kavod hames is the most important issue and its not important to discuss these details now but many of the Satmar who might have wished to pay their respects to Niftar live in Brooklyn and will not in the middle of the night. Also, they will have to wait until daylight on Sunday morning for the burial anyway so I'm not sure why the few hours would make a difference.
