New York - The NY Post this morning endorses the candidacy of Michael R. Bloomberg to serve four more years as mayor of New York City.

We do so for many of the same reasons that led us to back him four years ago: This is not the time for untested leadership in City Hall.

And Bill Thompson, a fundamentally decent and well-intentioned Democrat, simply doesn’t measure up to the standard Bloomberg has set since 2002.

It can be hard to warm to Bloomberg’s governing style, and we have little patience for his often arrogant nanny-state meddling in New Yorkers’ private

But it is also hard to imagine what New York City would look like today if either of his past opponents, Mark Green or Fernando Ferrer, had been elected in his stead.

Fact is, Bloomberg has put together a remarkable record.

Advertisement:

* On education: Mike Bloomberg will be remembered as the mayor who brought accountability to the system. Supervisors, principals, teachers, students—all are now expected to show results.

And they have, often spectacularly.

* On crime: Bloomberg and Commissioner Ray Kelly took a crime rate that already was declining dramatically and drove it to levels not seen since the ‘60s.

And they did so even while deploying significant resources into counterterrorism—helping to keep New York safe from another 9/11.

* On finances: Eight years ago, Bloomberg took a city driven deep into recession by 9/11 and helped bring it back. Last June, he delivered a budget that cut spending by $1.5 billion—even as Albany’s budget grew by 10 percent.

Yes, he negotiated deals with the municipal unions that included overly generous raises. But he also insisted on tough social-services policies designed to reduce fraud, end dependency and guarantee that only the truly needy receive government aid.

Whether he maintains this prudent fiscal course is the great question mark of a third Bloomberg term.

But the record suggests that he will.

There is, of course, one other matter: Doesn’t New York City have term limits?

No doubt, some New Yorkers are angry about how Mayor Mike used his considerable resources to having them set aside to allow him to run again. It was a characteristic display of Bloombergian hubris, and we suspect that it will cost him on Election Day.

Plus, the mayor himself may come to regret the run.

Third terms historically are problematic in New York politics; just ask Ed Koch. Events intrude, and conspire to tax the abilities of even the most talented leaders.

But that’s all the more reason why it’s important that the most talented candidate on the mayoral ballot be elected. Mike Bloomberg has been a competent—sometimes brilliant—steward of a successful city that not so long ago was deemed ungovernable.

He has earned four more years.

As the post states, we are faced with a difficult choice. While most people don't want Bllomberg, we don't have a reasonable alternative.
Running NYC is a tough job, and not something I personally feel Thompson can handle.
Also, unfortunatey, the recent incident with Patterson blaming anti racial feelings on his failure makes it harder for me to vote for Thompson.

Its really disgusting & embarrassing to read racist, bigoted opinions from a community that was subject too stereotyping and persecution for centuries. I keep hearing people tie Thompson to Dinkins; Is every Jew a Madoff, does every Jew have a long nose how can we become like our persecutors its scary.

I would like to point out that crime is down due to cell phones and camcorders. When someone walks in middle of the night with a cell phone, a would be mugger thinks ten times before he strikes. Burglars and thieves are caught nowadays more frequently due to camera’s everywhere plus quick communication to catch them in time. True if it would be the other way around the mayor would be blamed, but the truth is the truth; crime is down because of the advancement of technology.

Looking back at the NY Post's endorsments over the years, they seem to have a pretty good track record of....
... genuflecting in front of the powerful and/or incumbents.

Take a gander at their coupon campaign to get Koch to run, again and again. Or how they loved Rudy, again and again.

It's called... pandering.

No one individual is that super critical in political (or, for that matter, business) office. And if Mike ("billion dollar overrun on 911 centers") is such a great manager, let him offer his services to the next mayor.

Don't forget towing your car (parked in an expired location) in addition to the ticket to meet quotas. That's a few hundred dollars plus a day of aggravation for you and your family.

I have a car and house in Boro Park and my family is voting for Bloomberg.
Take one second and think what are our biggest problems with Bloomberg, Tickets.
I'm happy to hear everyone complaining about it, cause I still remeber the days that we used to complain over alot of bigger issues then tickets.
So, it sounds like to me that Bloomberg is doing a excellent job and deserves to be Mayor of this great city for another $ years.

Stop breaking hte law and you wont get a ticket. It took Bloomberg 8 years to undo the bad attitude of the 20 previous years of corrupt policians that ran New York and it's council. Now If Bloomberg could only change New York State then this will be the best state ever. Shelly Silver and his goons must go because they are destroying the city and it comes to a point there is so much Bloomberg or any Mayor can do to keep this city going straight forward.

I know one thing. Having a new guy as mayor would destroy this city because everyone kisses tuchis. Bloomberg owes nobody anything and does what he thinks is best for this city for now and in the future. What more can you want already?

better parks
safer streets
better education including our own schools.
different city departments working hand in hand

a better 311 an accountable 311

Almost every street has been repaved so you save money by not having a wheel alignment done every month. We forget those days.

Cleaner streets.

More efficient subway systems

consessions with all unions to do more with less.

Better police officers and better community officers in all boroughs.

I can list another 50 things that Bloomberg has done and accomplished that no toher Mayor in this country has done and you think by having someone else at this time you won't get tickets when you double park?

Are you kidding all of us?

He didnt do anything it was fine before him he took over a city pretty much under control but after the raising of all the different fines, taxes etc the city is still in bad shape financially if would have only invested half the funds for the people that he invests in campaigns people would have voted for him but he didnt so people dont like him plus if he is such a great mayor why is he so little ahead from thompson after when he is spending so much money i guess people are not happy with him and he is not getting my vote.
