A detective and a sergeant had to be physically restrained during the tense, profanity-laced standoff – which sparked a debate among police brass about who was out of line.

The uniformed officer repeatedly demanded identification from the detectives, who were following up on a possible bias crime.

“It’s quite disappointing that these detectives were subjected to the very same type of conduct that they were investigating,” said the detectives’ lawyer Eric Sanders.

The detectives were investigating an incident in which a black woman’s car windows were shot out in the predominantly white neighborhood of Gravesend, Brooklyn.

Hate crime task force members Stephon Garland and Gregory Wilson, who are black, and Faisal Khan, who is Pakistani, were wearing suits for the door-to-door canvass.

About 15 members of the Shomrim Jewish Community patrol arrived, and someone dialed 911, alleging the detectives were police impersonators, according to a report reviewed by The News.

The detectives identified themselves over the air to the radio dispatcher, but the situation escalated when uniformed cops from the 61st Precinct responded and demanded their ID cards.

Khan told Officer Craig Malamed, who is white, that he and his partners were from the task force and what they were doing.

After Khan and Wilson showed the cop their IDs, Malamed complained to his sergeant that Garland was sitting in the SUV and had not displayed identification.

Garland, the report states, called the cop a “f—–g d–k.”

An NYPD spokesman said the incident is under review to determine whether there were violations of department rules on either side.

“Detective Garland believes that he was treated in a disrespectful manner because of the color of his skin,” the report states.

Garland also told investigators he was “very upset” by the manner he was treated by the Jewish community.

Community-based Jewish patrols like Shomrim and Shmira have been criticized for inflaming racial tensions and allegedly taking the law into their own hands.

The son of a black cop was allegedly beaten by a Shmira member last April in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Other than the drive by shot at Shomrim, what do they have to do with the story? The uniformed cops profile the black detectives, and the Jews get the blame for being in the area?

The VIN headline mentions shomrim, but the original article in the paper does not. It sounds like the shomrim called the cops.

Can’t anyone read around here? “About 15 members of the Shomrim Jewish Community patrol arrived,”!!!

I would hope Shomrim would call the police when they see suspicious characters in the community. And yes, appearance can contribute to suspicion. There is no person in the world who really thinks profiling is wrong; just people who pretend to think it for political reasons. Anyone who really thinks that all people are equally likely to be criminals is so stupid he’d have trouble breathing and walking at the same time, and so would never be in a situation where profiling was called for.

When these detectives ask for ID, do they also understand if the perps get all heated up and insulted. Why were they so defensive. It sounds like they have something to hide.

    Blame the citizen?

So when citizens see something suspicious and they call the cops, the cops arrive and ruffle the feathers of the detectives, the citizens are blamed for calling the cops in the first place??

Translation: It’s quite disappointing that they were treated like ordinary citizens. How dare they!

this article has nothing to do with crownheights shomrim! like the article itself says “The detectives were investigating an incident in which a black woman’s car windows were shot out in the predominantly white neighborhood of Gravesend, Brooklyn”.
last time i checked gravesend isnt anywhere near crownheights! i think its 61 precinct in the flatbush area.

its a discrase to see how the NYPD officers /detectives are looking fwd to make money on the job by coming out with racis and the next thing you know they are sueing the city.
#1 maybe they are hoping to get invited to the whitehouse as well
#2 why would they come out with statements against SHOMRIM when shomrim did everything by the book, and thier statement is that shomrim took the law into thier own hands.
if they are detectives in nyc they must know better how would a police impersinator act when they get approached by a police officer
its a SHAME TO hear nypd detectives behave so unproffesional, maybe they should be down grated to a marked vehicle which reminds them what CPR stands for.
