The sign which was posted on a Second Street house has spread fear and fury over one business owner’s threat to start a volunteer immigration watchdog group in an effort to clean up the downtown commercial district. [Reported earlier VIN News]

The Sign was taken down on Friday morning. Hershel Told The Lakewood Scoop, that it was taken down for safety reasons. “Some groups threatened to riot-and with families in the area-I don’t want them to be in danger” he said.

Would that more of our relatives had been able to immigrate illegally to the US or Palestine in 1940!

I find it very wrong that Jews, who suffered enormously from immigration restrictions, and would have done anything to evade those restrictions legally, or illegally only 60 years ago, would now insist upon similar restrictions upon others. Where is our consideration and respect for Tzelem elokim, have we learned nothinbg from our own experiences?

I live in Lakewood. This guy is not a mainstream guy. It is always the one noise maker who gets the attention while tens of thousands quiet people just mind their own business quietly.

If somone can go to the bank and make undocumented withdrawl -call it a robbery by demanding mony- why should I have to write a withdrawl ticket and give identification to match up and get only as much money which is availi ble? Simply make an undoc transaction…..same thing with immigration each and everyone had to be documented – also the were all running for their lives, these people come to work make money live on our tax supported programs and send back the money saved up instead of spending in our economy

It seems many posters r not from Lkwd or never go to the downtown, so, allow me to clarify. Right now, in a 3-4 block area on Clifton Ave, the sidewalk is packed w/ illegals. It is very unpleasant, at times to walk by them. Also, if a lady walks by, dressed even quasi-decent, the illegals start makong cat calls & muttering unmentionables under their breath.this is gross. It has also driven down frum pedestrian traffic. Thus, and because some unscrupolous investors raising storefron rents, has caused many frum stores to move out. Of course, every store moving out makes it harder for those that stay. This is, briefly, what Mr Hershkowitz is battling. And belive me, he has the support of every single frum store-owner & employee, especially the women of that neighborhood. Go, Hershel, Go !!!

I do not live in Lakewood anymore, but visit from time to time.

Yes, the The Clifton Ave– First thru Third Street scene is scary, but why are they there? It is because of the frum! They are the cheap workers used by the frum builders, the cheap nannys used by the frum homemakers, the cheap workers in the frum restaurants, the cheap shleppers in the frum stores, etc, etc.

The common factor- cheap labor. So, if they went away the cost of living in Lakewood would rise quite sharply. Can’t have it both ways! .

To all you guys who trash this man about racism, Chillul Hashem etc… You obviously have no idea who this guy is. If you read the first article you will see that he is very specific that he is not against illegals, he is against the illegal stores that create a dangerous situation. So before you go trashing anyone make sure you know what you’re talking about.

Oh one last thing, I am sure you don’t want this to happen in your neighborhood, so shut your mouth.

Hershel, keep it up. you are accomplishing more in 2 weeks then anyone of the committee men did in there term.

People like Hershel need our FULL SUPPORT! Lives are endangered by these illegals – and you NEVER know whose life! What do these illegals provide, besides taking jobs AWAY from Yidden???They are UNDESIRABLES in our neighborhood – P E R I O D !!!

How was this guy supposed to know who is or isn’t legal? The only way they are assuming who is or isn’t legal is by racial profiling. If they want to start neighborhood crime watch groups, that’s fine.
To couch it in terms of illegal immigration is silly and invites charges of racism. This man should have known better.

To Hershel, like all people who stand up for the klal as leaders, you are being misunderstood at first. Do not back down.

To the readers: Hershel is the greatest. I know him for over 20 years from Ner Yisroel and the Mir and Lakewood. He actually is quite a liberal minded guy when it comes to “race-relations”. He gets along with everyone and likes peole no matter their color. His dad used to help tons of Mexican workers in Los Angeles where he grew up. The real issue is not the ilegality or the ethnicity of the people he is trying to stop, but the ilegality of their activities, the danger to the frum community’s youth, and the shanda of having a slum for a downtown of a city which is supposed to be a Kiddush Hashem.

Hershel for Mayor has the full endorsement of the Jewish Board of Advocacy for Children!
