Lakewood, NJ - Incumbents Keep Committee Seats in Lakewood |
|
Democrat Meir Lichtenstein and Republican Menashe P. Miller defeated four challengers to go on to third terms. Lichtenstein, one of only two Democrats victorious in Ocean County, won 31 percent of the 35,585 total votes, while Miller took 34 percent.
"My intention is to make sure our communities are pulled together and to continue to work for all of Lakewood," Lichtenstein said.
Challengers Hannah Havens, a Republican, and Miriam Medina, a Democrat, lost with 3,613 and 2,790 votes, respectively.
Despite a vigorous grass-roots campaign, Cunliffe, a former 12-year Democratic committeeman, fell short with 3,279 votes, or 9 percent. His running mate, Lynn M. Celli, pulled in 2,993 votes.
Still, there was sizable dissatisfaction with the sitting committee, particularly from within the adult communities.
"Our needs and desires are totally ignored," 63-year-old Jack Weber said, citing the township's intentions for aggressive future development.
Others, among them some Jewish voters, have shown consistent support for the incumbents, who are Orthodox.
"I like what they're doing," Andrew Rotenberg, a voter, said outside a polling station at town hall.
Cunliffe said he was pleased with his showing.
"I think the totals speak for themselves," he said. "Now all I have to do is attract the Republicans and Democrats over to see the light and join the independent party."

Great news for builders and mosdos, terrible news for the regular guy. The Vaad says who to vote for and the masses follow blindly, not knowing what they're doing to themselves.
Great job, Lakewood.

True they'll be helping out developers very much, but I don't see how much they would harm you. (Of course whatever helps the builders and at the same time harms you isn't included, because that WILL harm you) but other than that, they can't be worse for the jews than the others.

I think you 2 comments are way out of line. These 2 gentlemen, Lichtenstein and Miller, have been working dilligently on behalf of the Lakewood community for years and deserved to be reelected. Demeaning the Lakewood voters by saying they are mere lemmings is definitely not condusive to amity and cooperation in the community. The growth of Lakewood as a mokom Torah has been fuled by the growth in development, providing acceptable housing, and in turn by the growth of the mosdos of Torah and tefila. The greatest evidence of this success is the constant cooperation and achdus of the chasidic and Yeshivish communities. We should all welcome continued growth in lakewood and other such locations. In 1945, after the world had looked away and said on us "pen yirbu" , Hashem said "kein yirbu" and so we have Boruch Hashem.

Endorsed by Rav Shteinman to me is a big joke. Someone went into the gadol and told him that it's best if these people win and he said 100%. Take that as an endorsement and daas torah is extreme. Rav Shteinman will never back people who support gay marriage etc (which corzine does) etc.... It's all about $$$$
It's sad the vaad needs to go so far and have Rav Shteinman endorse their cronies...It's time for the vaad to stand up to values and not just do lip service with disclaimers

I am not questioning the Vaad's request to re-elect the committeemen. However, I sure would like to hear their detailed justification for endorsing Corzine over Christie. There definitely seems to be more than meets the eye with that one.
