The Torah speaks about justice and mercy. My first instinct is for justice only without the mercy; however, we have to employ both in this case because as the murderer must bear all of the blame for his behavior, humanity shares some responsibility for its inaction of removing this Commissioned Officer from his duties and from the Armed Forces; and for not doing a good enough job about others condeming all Muslins as bad and as rotten.
I do think Muslims in America must renounce victumhood; and go out of their way, to live the good parts that are written in the Koran and seek greater and more meaningful dialogue with other faith based and secular communities.
A part of me wants this man to be shot for treason because he is a traitor for all those serving in the Armed Forces; however, I guess I could settle for life at Leavenworth without parole as a way of incorporating mercy with justice.
Can I forgive him for what he has done? Can I love this traitor, my enemy? Even if he were to change his ways and repent? No. He has committed a horrible deed (or sin) against G-d and man.
