New York - Forbes Magazine List: Obama Most Powerful Man |
|
Obama, whose popularity at home and abroad has boosted the image of the United States according to numerous surveys, topped the list that also features al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey as people wielding some influence over the world.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came in at number 46.
In compiling the inaugural ranking, Forbes said it had narrowed the list to 67 people, "a number based on the conceit that one can reduce the world's 6.7 billion people to the one in every 100 million that matter."
"The goal in compiling this list is to expose power and not glorify it, and over time reveal how influence is as easily lost as it is hard to gain," the magazine said.

You forget that he was elected at a time when this country was in terrible economic shape, involved in two wars and facing the prospect of the harmful effects of global warming. Despite all this he was able to put us on the road to economic prosperity, significantly scale down the war, and head off the ill effects of global warming by passing cap and trade. These monumental achievements in such a short period of time speak wonders to his brilliance and should be lauded by all of us in the jewish community who have the most to lose.Praise, not ridicule is what we should see on these comments.

The list will always put the President on the top or it is skewed and political. Unless it always gets published this time of year. Then once every four or eight years it is arguable that the lame duck isn't on top and the successor hasn't made it to the top yet.

I hate to burst your liberal bubble but nothing has improved since Obama became president. We are still in 2 wars that keep getting worse. The economy is a mess and unemployment has dropped to a record 26 year low. Its over 10%! Who cares if the dow goes up that doesn't measure the economy. We are in big trouble. Its just a sign of Obamas lack of SELFESTEEM that he keeps getting undeserved awards. They realize what a failure he is so they are trying to boost his morale. Its beyond pathetic. Do you not see his weakness in dealing with iran?

To be fair, the President of the United States is the most powerful single person in the world... no matter who it is. The fact that it is Obama is an accident of circumstance.
To be honest, after all the hard work Bush & Cheney put into making us the most hated nation on the planet, it is good to see that the world once again recognizes the United States as its most powerful nation.
However, this is a double-edged sword. While the economy is better, and new unemployment requests are FINALLY on the decline (as of yesterday), Obama certainly has a long way to go in living up to the hype. Maybe he will... maybe he won't... either way, it shows that what the world really respects is the Liberty and Freedom that the Office of the President represents. That is the key thing to remember here

To all my opponents;
Global warming if a vital issue which we will all have to face eventually. Al Gore did much research at his own expense to alert us to what the future holds if we don't stop polluting the environment . We should be thankful that Obama accepted this issue as primary for his administration. He boldly pushed for legistlation to concour this pressing threat and won, overcoming the right wing wackos in his quest for victory.
The two wars that George Bush and the conservatives got us into are now winding down as a result of Obamas bold refusal to commit more troops .
The economic disaster that the republicans brought on this country is being addressed by the president in a causious and logical manor and is beginning to show signs of success. Unemployment is shrinking, the stock market is up and retailers are smiling.
Instead of critisising Mr obama, pray for him and we will and be the better for it.

I'm not a scientist, but I remember hearing about the ozone layer was being depleted and that it would get colder over time. A few years later, however, the hot topic is global warming.
Do us all a favor and please don't feed us baloney.

To the Rebitzin: may g-d help your obama upgrade the level of education in the country so that adults know how to spell better than you! Did you ever consider learning English? If you did, it would maybe also boost your intelligence so that you don't open your mouth and insert your foot by mistake!!!

He is clearly the most powerful person in the world today and other than Putin of Russia and the pope, clearly has more influence on people's lives. There are also some rabbonim who we as yiddin believe are "powerful" but clearly none of them rise to the level of Obama in terms of global influence. The president is also a great role model for all the world to look towards.

He may possess the most power in the world, but that is not an indication of competence. Foreign policy is a mess, unless you place a premium value on how much the socialist countries of the world love him. We have never had someone with so little experience take the reins of the country. He does not even have advisors with morals that are tolerable. He has permitted Iran to become nuclear, and he has given legitimacy to the terrorists of the world. You call that competence?
Domestic policies are not doing well either. Unemployment is the highest since the great depression. All we care about is the poor science about global warming? Courts have ruled that Gore's film can only be shown if statements providing true scientific knowledge are also shared with otherwise gullible students.
Power, yes. Capacity to utilize it in a manner that is moral and in the best interests of USA, NO.

Actually, you've got your facts wrong.
1. Iran was nuclear in early 2008 (we know for sure), and may have been nuclear a year before that. Do you think that nuclear facility that was 'exposed' was built yesterday? You can't be that naive.
2. Unemployment is at the same point it was under Reagan in the early 80's (it was actually even higher at one point). Then it was thanks to the failed policies of Carter. This time it is the failed policies of George W Bush. Anyone with even a small amount of knowledge on how the job market works knows that it takes several years to decline, and usually several years to come back because it is a LAGGING indicator.
New retail numbers and the unexpected increase in the value of the dollar recently are all VERY good signs. Housing prices are steadily rising as are sales. These are usually good LEADING indicators.
