This looks like a fair verdict. SMR defenders claimed the Government overreached with the livestock charges. The Jury agreed and found him not guilty. Obviously there was thought put into their decision.

Anyone that has knowledge of the federal judiciary knows the higher standards in jury trials. The guys was convicted by 12 random people on 86 different counts of white collar crime. D.A.s hate prosecuting white collar crimes because the evidence and trail is so difficult to put together and present to a jury in a way that will understand the complex schemes of money transfers and paper work. Stop crying antisemitism or setups by the feds, D.A.s and judges. Obviously the D.A. had solid enough case for the jury to convict on 86 charges. You can't use Spanish Inquisition or 15 century Polish pogroms against U.S. government. Rubashkin had good lawyers who couldn't muster enough excuses to explain the evidence. He has a small chance at the appeals level, but unless there is gross injustice or technical errors by the judge, the lawyers won't be able to set him off the hook.

The lesson here is that we should all be careful and not get carried away with our business practices. I pray that he will get through this tough chapter in his life.

That is all very nice but a jury of his peers (albeit not all of them such big talmeidi chachamim)have determined that he violated a whole range of federal laws involving stealing money from the banks through fraud and other similiar crimes. The mistakes he made, according to you, don't warrant the same "massive" charges as against murderers. happily for you, he wasn't charged with those. he was charged with fraud. and NOT so happily for you, he was found guilty, because you are the only one who thinks approximately 100 counts of fraud and other crimes are a teeny tiny mistake.

Yes...he stole money through the multiple frauds he committed against the banks etc. These were multiple felonies not "some stupid law". The only "stupidity" was by SMR himself. he claimed he was too stupid to know what he did was illegal and then compounded that stupidity when the prosecution offered a plea agreement which he rejected. This was not a one time, single mistake. This was a pattern of criminal activity over many years. How about some rachmonis for the jews who will suffer from persecution and antisemitism because of his crimes.

I do think that the jury system together with all its pros has its' cons. Professionals should be making the decisions not amateurs. But then again, can one find a honest professional.
