New York - Official: Brooklyn Restaurant Workers Underpaid $912,000 |
|
New York - New York state’s labor commissioner says more than 200 workers at 25 Brooklyn restaurants have been underpaid a total of $912,000.
Commissioner M. Patricia Smith said Thursday that 16 investigators made unannounced visits in April to 27 restaurants and coffee shops in the borough’s Park Slope neighborhood.
Twenty-five were found to be in violation of the state’s $7.25-an-hour minimum wage, overtime and other labor laws. Labor officials say most of the 207 underpaid employees delivered food. Officials say they worked 60 to 70 hours a week for $210 to $275 a week.
Workers at one restaurant were paid as little as $2.75 an hour.
Twelve cases have been resolved; the others are being negotiated.
Labor officials didn’t name the restaurants.

And why weren't any of the owners arrested and threatened with 800 years in jail?

This has got to be a lie. I know the business and deliverymen make decent money. That's why they drive cars and buy gas to do the job. Nobody works 80 hours for under $300 in NYC, especially illegal restaurant workers. What a bunch of bolonga. I just cannot stand this hypocracy. Lies Lies Lies. Clearly NYC is bankrupt and they need fines to keep the City from insolvency. What a shame the City needs to resort to these tactics. Restaurants will start closing, store fronts will go empty and then everyone will be on bread lines like my Zeideh told me stories about the Great Depression. Is this what we have in store for us? Yidden start saving every cent. Bad times may be coming very soon. HaShem Yirachem aleinu. Amen.

Ooops, sorry the article states it was the State Labor commissioner. At any rate, these are criminals aren't they? They abused their workers didn't they, paying them below minimum wage? And did anyone even check if these are legal workers? If they get only tips I am sure no one bothered to fill out a W-4 so they were never asked for their SS#. Is that legal? And of course they get paid in cash so there is NO RECORD of earned wages so they never have to declare taxes and employers don't have to pay social security, workers comp, disability, unemployment insurance, etc....
Is all of this fraud? Are these employers going to be arrested for fraud and cheating the government?
OMG, where are you, why aren't you weighing in on this? Pull out your law books and lets hear the legalities involved here? Let's hear your disgust about this.

You have to live with the times my friend - they work for $2.75 per hour - on the books! The rest of the income is either off the books (from the owner) and/or from tips (from clients).

That's what I've been saying all along!
