New York City - A coalition of 40 Brooklyn organizations held a press conference just prior to the City Council’s Land Use Subcommittee hearing Thursday, Nov. 19, on the plan to rezone the Broadway Triangle in Brooklyn.

The rally took place 9 a.m. on the steps of City Hall. The triangle is a 50-acre urban renewal area on the border of Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The group, known as the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition, made up of most major housing and community organizations in Williamsburg and a number from Bedford-Stuyvesant, condemn the proposed rezoning as “a political give-away” to the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council and the United Jewish Organizations (UJO) of Williamsburg — at the expense of the Latino, Hasidic and African-American communities in the affected neighborhoods, according to coalition Chair Juan Ramos. “The city’s plan is defective at multiple levels, having completely excluded the Bed-Stuy community from participation in its development, and if approved will permanently prevent the Triangle Rezoning from providing maximum and comprehensive benefits to residents of the surrounding communities,” said Ramos, a Bed-Stuy resident.

Ramos notes that the proposed rezoning:

• Provides for less than half of the possible 4,000 units of housing that could be built;

• Guarantees that no more than 150 units of such housing be affordable, relying on incentives rather than a mandatory provision for such affordable housing;

• Adds no new open space or any additional community facilities, such as schools, despite the significant increase in residents that would result;

• Would result in the loss of existing businesses in the affected area; and

• Provides that a 50 percent preference for any affordable housing be given to residents of Williamsburg-Greenpoint only, excluding Bed-Stuy residents from the same preference, despite the fact that the Triangle falls within both Community Boards.

Ramos also calls attention to recent editorials in the New York Times and El Diario that have attacked the mayor’s secretive give-away that excluded every major community organization from the planning process other than the two beneficiaries, the Ridgewood Bushwick Council and the UJO.

Congress Members Nydia Velazquez and Ed Towns, and Council Member Diana Reyna, have indicated their opposition to the proposal and will call for a reopened, transparent process.

Meanwhile Azi describes  how the hearings went

I poked my head into the Council Chambers a few minutes ago, where Dan Garodnick was presiding over a rather well-attended Council hearing about a proposed rezoning at the Broadway Triangle.

That’s a 31-acre piece of property whose rezoning is supported by Assemblyman Vito Lopez, the Brooklyn County Democratic Leader.

Critics like City Councilwoman Diana Reyna said many residents in the area were left out of the public review process before the rezoning was drafted. Reyna, whom Lopez tried to oust in this year’s Democratic primary and general election, is now helping lead the opposition to the rezoning.

I got to the hearing just before three women sat down to testify in favor of the rezoning, saying it will bring much-needed affordable housing to the area.

One of the women said the plans shouldn’t be delayed “because of political interests,” clearly a reference to Reyna.

Before the women left, City Councilwoman Rosie Mendez asked them a few questions, including their place of employment.

One by one, each of the three women said they worked for the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center. That’s the one that was founded, and is run, by Lopez.

The way it sounds, these protesters don't rep. any worthwhile community, for as seen on the past elections, those who are pro this project outnumberd those who are against, by a huge margin. So if thats what the community whants, why fight it?

# 2, You are wrong this group outnumbered Vito Lopez by thousands of votes in the election of Assemblywoman Diana Reyna, and the Jewish group had over 2,000 votes at the last primary with their own candidate Issac Abraham, so they are a force to be reckoned with.

There should be an open process not a closed door deal this is not Russia besides it only brings corruption if only 1 group is involved let other groups be involved too.

its interesting that this protest called for more properties been taken away and more eminent domain ( its true that these nut jobs aren't consistent and they protest every day on a different and even conratdicting reason, but now d excuse was we want more housing)

its also ironic that they are demanding that everybody should be allowed to have a say, and they are dressing it nicely "open process", when this is exactly the buracracy we are always fighting, this is exactly what always knew as the biggest problem that every project has to be approved by "everybody" and everybody has to have a say, this is exactly what stalls every project including this project -which is in the works for around 20 years- up until now.

everybody knows that if UJO would start working with diana reyna on this project, or Lopez should start working with Gershey shlesinger, all problems would suddenly dissapear,

everybody knows if all groups and individuals would have a say on it it wouldn't go anywhere, and nothing would get done, but this dosent stop all these "KINAH SINAH" groups from trying to block this so desperatly needed housing for the community and trying to destroy the greatest accomplishment of our heimishe askunim in decades.

shame on all of them and their callobarators,

# 6, why doesn't UJO and Vito Lopez try to take away from pfizer who has 24 acres right smack in the middle of the triangle their property? Why do they have to take away from heimishe people their land? Because they can't fight a Multi Billion dollar company?? That's not fair! That's why their is an opposition from so much heimishe yiddin to this process, take away pfizer Not poor yiddin.

I was there, first there was a small rally on the steps of city hall, and then there was a hearing in front of the land use commitee who have this issue in front of them to decide, at the hearing many noted Askanim spoke out against the rezoning among them Huaskan R' Avrum Shie Retek (you can see him on the picture siiting at the hearing) R'Retek is the son in law Of R'Yankel (Jeno) Kahan President of Cong. Yetev Lev D'Satmar (younger brother's side)

to # !2 it does not matter who's son in law one is, the reason he was there is simply cause he being a victim.
He bought a property there over 10 years ago (just like all others (including family and freinds of Reb Neiderman) but His are amongst the few that neiderman decided to include in HIS plan that the city should excersize eminent domain and take away his property

on the issues itself, one of the main points of opposition is, that there is ONLY a guarentee of 150 low income apartments in the area......HELLO.... IS this why we had to vote sooo many times for Lopez???? Does that justify taking away jobs for almost as many people???
Neiderman was smart in turning this into a political Aroni- Zali issue, cause this way his People wont look into the ACTUAL deal. but vote for him blind.

PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!

To make it clear I was personally there at the public hearing.
the yiden there are not against affordable housing, they just claim that the current plan would take away their properties . And asked to review the plan since we see that the city does not take away other properties on the same block because it belongs to pfizer.

Its unbelievable that we see Yiden supporting a plan that would affect other yiden, Instead of helping them stay with there properties.

Its about we stand up for our jewish brothers!! And support them!!

I realized one of the concerns listed above is that there will only be 150 low income apartments.. On the papers filed there is actualy only 90 that is going to be built by UJO/Lopez/City.
If either one is true its a shame.
Its a shame of how cowerdly they think our community is by advertising the last few months that there will be 900 low income apartments (well they only added a zero, ha?).
On second thought, there is no doubt that UJO had to make a deal with Lopez, So , Rabbi Neiderman, why dont you say it the way it is, and tell us what exactly was the deal between UJO and Lopez, is it 50-50 or did you have to give him more like 70-30 which would leave our community with about 27 low income apartments...
You ARE representing us, so why not SHARE the deal with US.

# 16 don't you realize that he doesn't care what the community will get? he didn't even show up at such an important part of the process which is the land use hearing? that just shows how irresponsible he is.

I have to correct you about his not showing up, cause he surely cares about the process going theru since he is the sponsor of the project.

It troubles me that he wasnt there, since it rather shows how confident he is that it will go thru.
