Union City, NJ - A New Jersey man who paid a municipal official $5,000 to get approval for an illegal apartment in a building he owned has been convicted of bribery.

A federal jury deliberated for about two hours Friday before convicting 49-year-old man. The Union City man faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he's sentenced March 3, although the actual sentence is likely to be less under federal sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors said the apartment in the West New York building was discovered during a routine inspection in March 2007.

The man paid the money to the construction code official during a meeting at the official's office that was recorded by the FBI. The official also testified against the man.

West New York has a population of around 46,000 people, many of them renters.

Mr.Friedman was waiting 6 months for the apartment approval and the inspector has requested and insisted to get the $5000 the whole time before he would grant an approval as the coversations has been recorded by the FBI and played in court since the inspector was a cooperating witness during this whole period for other crimes that he got caught, this was pure entrapment, this person has K"H a nice family and a clean record

Under American law, it is illegal to either solicit a bribe, or to pay one.

For that matter, if you bribe a government official in another country, even if that country doesn't care, you can be prosecuted under American law.

When he left friday 3:15 the lawyer ask permission that if the judy will be able to Verdict before shabbos they should be able to do it in front of the lawyer and that's what happened he got a phone call on his way home

36

Nov 22, 2009 at 06:36 AM Anonymous Says:

Yes its very true. The fbi set him up with a inspector that always created the norm to force a paid bribe to do business. Clear entrapment but hard to defend. Yes its true the defendent refused to be the next dweck and that is why the fbi will make him sit.

The choice of the fbi for using tainted inspectors who created the need for bribes to do business as the only way of getting a permit is questionable ethicly.

WRONG!!!
An attorney is only permitted a specific amount of challenges without cause. If there is one or two frummies in the jury pool, they can discard them, but not if there are five.

Mega Dittos.
You can't complain about a system that you have an opportunity to influence, but refuse to do so.
