Gretel Bergmann, of Queens, also had been banned from that year's Berlin Olympics by the Nazis because of her religion.
Germany's track and field association says the act of restoring Bergmann's record jump of 5 feet, 3 inches, "can in no way make up" for the past. But it called the decision an "act of justice and a symbolic gesture."
The track group also requested the 95-year-old Bergmann be included in Germany's sports hall of fame. Bergmann emigrated in 1937 to the United States, where she still lives.

I'm glad that she is still around to receive this recognition, and I hope that she will be blessed with many more years of good health.

I'm a different Charlie, but I agree.
Even more disgraceful was pulling Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller from the relay team -- because it was done BY THE US TEAM, as US Olympic Committee President Avery Brundage was a Nazi sympathizer.

What took the Germans so long to restore this injustice? That shouldn't be surprising... the Germans haven't yet restored justice to Greece and still haven't paid a single cent towards reparations for both the infrastructure destruction of the country and most importantly for the loss of 700,000 civilian Greeks (more than 10% of the total Greek population the highest percentage among ALL countries involved in the 2nd World War) that were either executed (for either being active members of the resistance against the Nazi German occupation of the country 1941-1945, or as retaliation to acts of resistance), or forced to death by torture, forced starvation or as collateral damage to military operations.

Of course it doesn't begin to make up for what happened, but, still, it was the right thing to do, and it was great to read that this woman was finally given her due. I hope she'll be able to visit Germany's Sports Hall of Fame and see her picture.

I'm sure she doesn't, and needn't care. She can be happy to just sit back and laugh, whilst watching history unfold, and feeling a part of it.
She is not looking now for motivation to beat another world record, so she might as well just reflect on the futility of things, with humor.

Whats Greece got to do with this? The Germans are the only nation, from a long list of Jewish persecutors, who have offered any sort of apology, reparations or even recognition for what they have done. While the Jewish people will never forgive or forget what they have done, we don't need to get on the Germans for not repaying Greece.

It makes me wonder how many other notable Yidden lost their humanity in the history books of Germany. I read some time ago that Bayer Asperin was actually developed by a Yiddish Scientist. Bayer Corp made him shmad to Catholicism but protected his life during the wartime. Does anyone remember his name? Another unbelievable story nobody really knows about....

Dont know anything about Greece but all the reperations that the Germans paid are a tiny fraction of what they confiscated from jews in the 12 years they had power.
Land and property. Businesses. Gold. Silver.Jewllery. Bank accounts. Art treasures. Slave labour and so on .

Don't forget that tens of billions of dollars were payed by German governments to State of Israel over the years (that is besides the reparations to individuals.) Not only that, but Germany sponsors military equipment and research to Israel that otherwise would never be available to Israel due to lack of monies.

I think what the commenter meant is that since the inyan was about the 1936 Berlin olympics, then Greece should also have juctice and reparations like this woman. After all, the olympics have a lot of shaiches to Greece (Yevonim).
