Brooklyn, NY - Sen. Schumer: Yeled V’Yalda To Expand Head Start With $1.7 Million Fed Grant |
|

Yeled V’Yalda WIC presented healthy lifestyle initiatives at the NYC WIC Recognition Day event on July 24, 2009. The affair, held in Poughkeepsie (edit)
“Giving low-income children a chance to be prepared for kindergarten and future grades is a great thing and I applaud Yeled V’Yalda for its hard work and dedication to the children and families of Brooklyn and Staten Island,” Schumer said. "This Head Start grant will give this outstanding organization the funds they need to expand their Head Start program and give these kids an opportunity they might not otherwise have."
Head Start, both center-based and home-based applications, and Early Head Start form the core of Yeled V’Yalda’s Early Learning Center. They serve more than 1,300 children. Both the Head Start and Early Head Start programs offer the core services associated with the program, including special needs screening and follow-ups, medical needs screening and tracking and other social service supports. The federally funded center based Head Start program is full day and part day. It services children three to five years old and is designed to give income-eligible children a quality preschool educational experience.
The curriculum is designed to nurture the development of the whole child in the social, emotional, linguistic, cognitive and physical domains in an environment which supports social and emotional development. Learning is child centered within the framework of teacher planning. Teachers work on language and literacy development, encouraging the ability to read and write fluently. Number concepts are taught at an age-appropriate level. Science, physical activity, social and emotional development, friendship and sharing, are all incorporated into the Head Start curriculum. Nutrition, health and safety are topics that are also integrated into the lesson plans as well as addressed directly.
The objective of the Head Start grant program is to promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of low-income children, including children on federally recognized reservations and children of migratory farm workers, through the provision of comprehensive health, educational, nutritional, social and other services; and to involve parents in their children's learning and to help parents make progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. Head Start also emphasizes the significant involvement of parents in the administration of their local Head Start programs.

He worked hard and arranged this grant from the federal government so he wants his constituents to know that. Nothing wrong with publicising that. He deserves the credit.
Give credit where credit is due.

All this stimulus money will be paid for in double and triple by taxpayers, who are few and far between in boro park.
Yeled V'yalda actively petitioned for this grant. They are a business not a social agency. Do they deserve it? their classes are in a privately owned building (owned by YVY) and give some children free pre school. why don't they put classes in yeshivas to help the yeshivas with equipment and by paying the yeshivas rent?? plenty of our mosdos could use this income, which is legal rent and money for salaries. all this means is more $ for a few people's pockets with some services offered in their private building for a select few with protekzia!!
They opened a gym, that they got funding for- to service their Headstart parents, so why do the parents have to pay to use it?
yeled vyalda should work on improving not expanding.

It is a great accomplishment of Yeled v’Yalda which is a community based organization. These are real activist who care about community’s needs and ensure that we as a community have the same access to programs and funds which we pay taxes for and not just other communities who take but don’t give anything back to the society. Our children will benefit and will go on to become productive members of society. We pay private school tuitions and don’t get anything back for our community from the school taxes we pay. Kol Hakovod to Yeled v’Yalda who makes sure that families entitled to receive help due to their economic or health difficulties can benefit from our money. We should consider it as if we as a community sponsored others in need not through charity but through taxes we all pay. I personally know families who would never be able to afford pre-school or developmental services in a frum environment if not for Yeled v’Yalda. These kids were helped and mainstreamed. I am also happy that they provide jobs for people in our community through all their programs. If not such organizations, half of the community would not have jobs. Thank you to Yeled v’Yalda.

The gym is supposed to be for free (thanks to me and others who pay more taxes in one year that most will pay all their lives).
They are stealing all special ed cases and not providing. Many providers have bogus degrees made up by Yeled V'Yalda. You think your child is being serviced and is not.
Parents look and find out you are not getting what you are entitled too.
This is a phony organization, funneling money to Belz.

is it right that Yeled vyalda wants to be the sole community organization?? we had wic before they came around, we had the boro park community council, before they came around, we had early intervention before they opened their own agency, why do they think they should do EVERYTHING?? the profit margin seems to be the obvious answer.
let other agencies have a chance, that goes for early intervention, special ed and speech services too. Try to do therapy in a yeled vyalda classroom if you work for any agency other than theirs. they think they are entitled to a monopoly.

YVY actually has supervisors in all therapy fields and quality control personnel as well. They offer training to their therapists in order to help them advance in their expertise. I believe the gym is free for YVY headstart parents. $70/mth is lower than the fair market price charged by other gyms who have very minimal equipment only and no pool. With respect to other agencies, they all have the option of competing for federal dollars. YVY has excellent proposal/grant writers and a vision to expand their programs. YVY is actually a not-for-profit organization that started with the headstart programs and grew to encompass the entire child and his/her family needs.

It's the truth and the truth hurts. If they are lining their pockets, let them share!
Yes, they do underpay therapists. They give so called therapists going to a mentor program that any 3rd grade yeshiva boy could do cases, even when they don't have their degree. They make monolingual therapists bi-lingual. In other words it's like printing counterfeit money. Then they take these inexperienced therapists , some who will never finish, make them sign the full check and pay them 20%. Yes, this is really happening. Another thing, some people were hired to do the big jobs which includes signing their names on important documents. Therefore, when the truth will come up, innocent people will be jailed such as was in the case of the council of Boro Park.
It is known that this agency paid back $2 million to the government. Imagine what they kept!!!

If you don't want your therapist to cheat on time, don't let her. You just don't sign the papers and time sheets she gives you.

What are you talking about? Therapists are not forced to work for YVY. They can work for any agency they please. The way therapists get their degree is their own business. YVY does not promote any program and if a therapist feels unqualified after completing her degree, she probably is. YVY will provide mentoring.
Also, YVY do not "make" therapists bilingual. How do you do that? They do offer Yiddish courses, so therapists can learn another lang. The therapists still have to pass government tests to determine whether they can read, write and speak in the second language. YVY does NOT ask therapists to provide kickbacks. Also, the reason they gave back money is because they did not fill all the slots they were approved for. YVY actually made a big kiddush Hashem. They are constantly being audited (bec. of their many programs) and any fraud would've been spotted immediately.

I really feel bad for you. But let me tell all parents out there, this is America and you are free to choose your therapist and/or which agency you want to work with. There are agencies who are on top of you and the services therapists provide even if they are doing this for even 20 years. Another thing you parents need to know is that you must have constant contact with therapist not on child's therapy time. If you are not pleased with services you can change. Unfortunately many children in dire need of speech therapy are either not being serviced or being serviced by students. You as a parent can request a fair hearing and receive an RSA and go to a therapist you know is able to service your child. If a therapist calls to introduce themselves you as a parent have the right to question the therapist and ask about her/his experience. Many therapists overload themselves. Yes, they need the parnosah and are looking for hours, not to service your child but to help pay their bills. In many schools/yeshivos the school will put your child in a class where the teacher could use help and in essence your child's SEIT teacher will end up as an assistant in the class helping the teacher.

Its pretty obvious that most defenders of YvY are employees themselves. Stop defending yourselves "anonymously", and start "serving the whole community". You can't receive a huge grant from the government for a gym to serve the community and then charge $80 membership fee! Why dont you accept in your schools more students who are not actually belze chasidim? It's time for the "non profit" businesses to stop being the most profitable businesses after all!

“ why is it that all the people praising yeled vyalda are employees who feel they have to defend their positions?
thank goodness, of course, they made a kiddush hashem, they cant afford otherwise. they dont show their flaws and they point out the good things, they know how to work the system and as they say themselves, they have grant writers etc, but, lets be honest, they could use some improvement in their oversight and the quality of their special ed services.. ”
I wrote the post you are referring to and agree that there's room for improvement. Unfortunately large agencies cannot be so particular with the quality of therapists since they are servicing many children. If feedback is not provided by parents and teachers, occasional supervisory work will not necessarily weed out ill-equipped therapists. As for those parents writing about therapists who "cheat" on their time, the agencies are always unaware and crack down hard when they find out.

“ It is a great accomplishment of Yeled v’Yalda which is a community based organization. ”
don't you realize that yeled veyalda makes a fortune of money and is a very profutable business not a charity or non for profit organization. the money they are getting from this grant is genaiva and should be given directly to organizations that service the truly needy

I can not believe the venom of the few people who gave their comments. If you will analyze all the statements and language you will clearly find that most of the virulent negative comments were written by the "same" person. Same misspellings, same exact incorrect grammar, exact same statements.
The individual is either a disgruntled employee that for whatever reason felt they were mistreated or not paid what they feel they are worth ("Yea, those filthy rich bosses, they only steal from the poor and work off the employees backs). Or
Maybe, R"L Heavin forbid,a parent who has a child that needs assistance and didn't get the services that they felt they should have gotten. and are blaming YvY for this.
I have been involved in the field (as a therapist and private councelor to parents)for over 15 years, Yeled Vyalda is considered to be one of the most concientious providers of therapy. Perfect? No one is. They treat both the children and parents with the highest of respect. It is very unfair what is being said. Regardless of how disgruntled and angry you are, call them directly. Blowing off steam here will not help your child or get you a job. I wish you and YvY the best
