Manchester - Rabbi Cleared of Supplying Cocaine |
|
Baruch Chalomish held his head in his hands as a jury foreman announced in court he was not guilty of supplying drugs.
He had earlier admitted possessing cocaine and will be sentenced on December 17. Rabbi Chalomish is facing a community sentence and will go into rehab.
The 54-year-old father of three, who says he is worth £7m net from his commercial property empire, admitted he had become addicted to cocaine, spending up to £1,000-a-week on the drug.
Extraordinary
He said he sought solace in cocaine following the sudden death of his 'angel', wife Freda, from cancer at the age of 40 in 1996.
At Manchester Crown Court, Judge Michael Henshell thanked the jury and told them: “Ladies and gentlemen, you have listened to an extraordinary case. It's not the usual case of drug dealing or possession of drugs.
"You heard facts which were really outside my experience, dealing with a man who was an eminent member of his community who was in possession of drugs who was on trial facing drugs supply charges. I'm sure you could not fail to be moved by what you heard.”
When police raided a one-bed hotel apartment on Shudehill, Manchester, on January 5, they found Chalomish together with convicted drug dealer Nasir Abbas along with 50g of cocaine dotted around the apartment, digital scales, nearly £3,000 in cash and cutting agent used to dilute the drug before it is sold.

This is typical goyische anti-semitism. The Rabbi was doing Hashem's holy work. I know the entire story, he was set up. Wait a second. He was acquitted? Nevermind

Boruch Hashem. Now where are all the commenters who were so sure he was guilty, and were reviling him in the worst terms and calling for his head? Will they apologise now? Do they still think it's this terrible chilul hashem?

Now I hope he gets treatment for his addiction. And the good thing is, it has highlighted the problem of drug addiction in the Frum community. It's not just our kids.

I did not comment on this person during the trial. However, what this should show is that when you do not have the facts it is hard to make a comment. Some people should think twice when they comment on how all cases concerning frum yidden are trumped up and the defendant should be allowed to go home. It is more than sad that he was addicted to cocaine since 1996. I hope he has success in rehab.

He is not out of the woods yet. He has admitted guilt to possessing cocaine. Clearly he doesn't deserve getting Shishi.

He WAS still found guilty of possession of Cocaine. Let's not forget that. Secondly, the UK courts are the most liberal in the world when it comes to drugs.
That being said, I really do hope he uses this as an opportunity to look to H" and find some peace in his life.

I've never commented on this case before and I do hope rehab works and he can get his life back but the reality is that yes, this was a chilul hashem. He may not have been selling but he was buying and he was taking cocaine.

He is an ill man, NOT a criminal. He does need supervised rehab and counseling.
Nasir Abbas is the criminal. Chalomish is his victim.

I really hope the us courts will learn from this case that there is a heart in a person
and I will not help them if you lock them up for a stupid 400-1000 years
I really don't know how a judge can say such stupid things 400-1000 years in jail when he knows the person
Will not leave so long
And they should have more warmth to any human being

Maybe if the kehilla would have been there for him and helped him more when his wife passed away, he would never have gotten involved with coke. Instead they happily took his money as he destroyed himself.
