Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy has signed into law "social host" legislation that makes it illegal for homeowners or renters 18 and older to knowingly allow underage drinking.
Nassau County enacted a similar law in July.

Under the law, anyone caught doing so could face up to a $250 fine for a first offense and up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail for a third.
The Suffolk law is expected to go into effect within 30 days. [AP]

Time to get serious about controlling the damage people can do when drunk.
Judging by some of the comments (and the spelling contained therein) I say it is time to ban BWI, Blogging While Intoxicated.

I confess though that I have no idea under the influence of what substance some of you have been blogging!

Something in the Brooklyn water supply perhaps?

Section 3(b) of Suffolk County’s Social Host law

    provides two exceptions, to wit:

“1. the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor whose parent or guardian is present and has expressly permitted such consumption; or

    2. the use and consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor for religious purposes.”

So go make kiddush with slivovitz or Jack Daniels if you wish. And have a Freiliche Purim!

And now that Steve has signed the law, we shall see how well the county enforces it. The way I’m calling it: They might end up prosecuting 5 or 10 adults, but only after one of their underaged guests gets all farshnooshket, gets behind the wheel of a car, and causes some big time damage.
