Williamsburg, NY - We haven’t been able to verify this one with the NYPD yet, but sources tell Gothamist that police — and South Williamsburg’s Shomrim Patrol — arrested two men suspected of attempting to repaint the recently-removed Bedford Avenue bike lane this morning.

According to tipsters, the neighborhood’s volunteer community watch group responded to reports at around 4 am that two men were using spraypaint to recreate a section of the bike lane, which the Department of Transportation controversially removed from a 14-block stretch of Bedford Avenue last week.

Police arrived at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Rutledge Street and arrested two suspects, sources said.

That story lines up pretty well with this posting by Twitter user WMSBG, which went online about two hours ago: “Police arrested this night two goiyem for re-painting the bike lane on Bedford ave with the help of Shomrim.”

According to Williamboard, cycling activists had already repainted some of the recently-removed bike lane late last week: “A few hipsters took on the initiative and repainted the Bedford av bike lane with paint and brushes late Friday night and it looks pretty charming.” Another commenter on the messageboard said: “i rode bedford this morning and kind of loled at the new bike lane markers. then some jackoff yelled at me in hebrew and did a fake-out move, like he was going to shove me off my bike.”

A spokesman from the NYPD’s press office said he had not been briefed on the reported arrests and that crimes of this nature aren’t always brought to the attention of his office.
Sources at Williamsburg’s 90th Precinct did not immediately respond to calls.

VIN News has independently reached out to Williamsburg Shomrim Patrol, and they have confirmed that they helped this morning apprehend 3 suspects who were repainting the Bedford Avenue bike lanes. All three have gotten summons.

If they were artists from the hood, they shall atleast repaint with some taste, rather than the boring white lines.

These goyim were doing the right thing to try and restore the bike lanes on Bedord...moving it to Kent was a big mistake and will discourage biking and increase pollution and carbon emissions. Hopefully they will be found not guilty and the shomrim should not have gotten involved.

why is it ok for them (hipsters) to be upset over something that was only added a few months ago but its wrong for people that live there to be upset for something that was taken away from them that they were using for the last 30 plus years??? yes we should all go biking but dont go and force it down someones throat just because you want to work out.

I can't believe the posters here. When fellow Yidden protest against Chilul Shabbos, they are called the worst names, and when some hipsters blatantly violate the law and illegally paint our roads to get what they want and send a message, they are cheered on as heroes (and Shomrim's not allowed to do their duty).

Tip to our brothers in Yerushalayim: Maybe use some paint erev Shabbos to divert traffic or close some roads or parking lots, perhaps the world will "paint" you in a better light then...

Oops, I forgot that only the non-frum get positive media and support for their cause...

On Lorimer Street between Marcy and Union Avenue, the hipsters painted a white line in lieu of a bike lane. When they come to clean up Bedford Avenue, please also send them to remove the illegal white line on Lorimer Street.

Thank you

The one lined bike lane looks pathetic and is a testament to the people that live there.
We can all go back to double parking on both sides of Bedford ave....
Traffic was worse before the bike lane.

not trying to mix in to your HISRARUS issue, what is, or isn't considered Hisgarus, but: "then some jackoff yelled at me in hebrew and did a fake-out move, like he was going to shove me off my bike." might sound like something related to it...

Bedford ave. bike lane was the most nicest & usefull bike lane, leaving the road with 2 full driving lane for cars & keeping the bikes off the driving lanes

when the bike lane was put up for the first time it provided hundreds of parking spaces between 7 - 10 AM, letting the residents to park their cars with no worry of getting ticketed or towed in the morning at 7 AM sharp. & when somebody needs to double park to load or unload the car, blocking the bike lane was a better option than blocking the car lanes & backing up the traffic till Bed. stuy.

now when the bike lanw ia removed unfortunately for some politic reasons, it was changed to Kent Ave. which is totaly destroyed, and can not be used anymore to drive down an avenue without sitting in Williamsburg traffic, and red lights. same happened to Whyte Ave. bet. Williamsburg st. - Flushing ave. same on Harrison ave. bet. Wallabout st. - Flushing ave. same on Vanderbilt ave. bet. Atlantic ave. - Prospecet pk. etc. etc... which are used by hundreds of Williamsburg Yiden daily.

don't farget the bikes driving on Bedford ave. are not planning to change there route, they are here to stay.

I am not a resident there but do business there and those bikes added traffic for the drivers. You want to ride bikes? Fine, we won't hit you, just don't close out the driving for some people riding bikes. The traffic was horrible with the adjustments - you can ride without the special lanes. Mini vans don't have lanes, bikes don't need either. Work it out without squashing out everything

Calling the police to report that someone is breaking the law is hisgarus bi'oomos? OK, after the DOT removed the bike lane, what would you call it if the Chassidim painted it back? You understand the dichotomy here, right? And BTW you guys in Gush Katif made a terrible mistake. You should have relinquished your israeli citizenship and negotiated with the Palestinians to live in the HOLYLAND of our forefathers under Palestinian rule. You could have kept the same houses, the same businesses, and the same lifestyle, but you had to be misgaros bi'oomos. You only wanted to live land controlled by the Zionist antireligious government of ISRAEL, because it is beneath your dignity to live under Arab rule. The Palesuinians would have had a great propoganda victory and would have sent the Army to protect you, to show they have nothing against Jews, only Zionist. And what did your wonderful Zionist state leave you with? No house, No Job, No compensation. And you still support them.

the bikes riding in the car lanes are definately interferring with traffic because they are going in different speed and are hiding in blind spots. where did anyone find the bike lane causing traffic on Bedford ave.

We need to do more to encourage bike riding in Brooklyn neighborhoods. All we are doing with our automobile-dependence is putting money in the pockets of Saudi kings and Iranian tyrants, destroying our planet's climate, and making our neighborhood a traffic-choked nightmare. Many many trips could be done by bike if the streets had safer facilities for bike riding. That is why we need to put the bike lanes back on Bedford Avenue and stop harassing bicyclists. Bicycles are a form of tikkun olam. Can't you see that or do you have too much exhaust in your eyes?
