Manhattan, NY - On that still-quiet Tuesday morning, the sales staff was in a basement room eating breakfast, waiting to open the doors to the first shoppers at 10 a.m.

There was no immediate sign of the fiery cataclysm that erupted overhead starting at 8:46. But out of a baby-blue sky suddenly stained with smoke, a plane’s landing-gear assembly the size of a World War II torpedo crashed through the roof and down through two empty selling floors of the Burlington Coat Factory.

The Sept. 11, 2001, attack killed 2,752 people downtown and doomed the five-story building at 45 Park Place, two blocks north of the World Trade Center. The store remained abandoned for the next eight years, one of the last undeveloped downtown properties damaged in the attack.

But for months now, out of the public eye, an iron gate rises every Friday afternoon, and with the outside rumblings of construction at ground zero as a backdrop, hundreds of Muslims crowd inside, facing Mecca in prayer and listening to their imam read in Arabic from the Koran.

I didn't see any shuls rushing in to rent the space so why shouldn't the mosque be allowed to rent. We are a long way from prohibiting muslims, litvashe yiddin or budhists from having their own facilities for prayer.

I have tingling going up my legs and spine from this "heartwarming encouraging" article in the New York Slimes.

I'm just wondering how come the Slimes goes out of thier way to always put muslims in such positive light and never finds a decent word to say about Jews or Israel?

BTW, that question was sarcastic.

This says it all!
We should NOT discriminate based on religion, but we should judge people as individuals based on their actions.
Muslims have a right to pray.
These people are pacifists, looking to spread a message of peace and not terror.
The proximity to ground zero forms the entire basis for anything potentially newsworth about this story, and frankly, this is a case of the Times sleazily sensationalizing the story.

Either you are being sarcastic or you are very sadly very naive.

Try building a church in a predominately Muslim country and see how long they tolerate that! If they had honest intentions on worship and not to kick big satan in the teeth, I could see it. They will be praying for the next terrorist attack in America!

ONCE a new mosque is built it begins a chain of events that is recorded times over in other countries. The Muslim community swells around the mosque, the streets get closed off during Holidays becoming a NO-GO ZONE and the laws begin to change slowly to favor Sharia because of their constant pressure and political demands. Eventually the community practices Sharia on it's own once the majority gets up past a certain point around 20-25%. THAT'S what's wrong.
