Washington - Think the Emanuel brothers—Rahm, Ari, and Zeke—are power players? Wait till you meet their ambitious, ridiculously precocious kids. Rebecca Dana on the political dynasty’s next generation.

This spring, the next great American dynasty will take a spiritual vacation. No, the Kennedys aren’t off to Hyannis Port. The Bushes aren’t whacking brush somewhere in Central Texas. The Roosevelts aren’t in Oyster Bay.

The Emanuel boys are heading to Israel.

Ari and Rahm Emanuel are returning to the land of their forefathers—and their actual father, Benjamin—to celebrate the bar mitzvahs of their eldest sons, Noah and Zach. That’s two more Emanuel men coming of age. And if you think the current generation is insufferably driven and accomplished (all three, including older brother Zeke, being titans in Hollywood, government, and medicine), just wait till you see the mensches in the wings.

For example, there’s Rebekah Emanuel, Zeke’s oldest. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, near the tippy top of her 2007 Yale class, with 29-straight As, she has been visiting blighted developing nations, studying there and aiding the infirm. She has been awarded some of the nation’s most prestigious grants and fellowships: the Simon, the Mitchell, the Fox, the Sewell, the Jerome Medalie Endowment (which she used to work at a hospice in Uganda), and the Haas Prize for Fundamental Humanity.

A shanda to shep naches over Rahm. He hasn't exactly distinguished himself advising and supporting his boss's policies with respect to Israel. He's an obnoxious Chicago thug with no morals, who now is trying to ingratiate himself to the Jewish community with this latest spin/photo-op/feel good story. I hope people won't be fooled.

Why do the libs always run to Africa to do chesed when there are plenty of impoverished people here in America?
Granted, I understand the situation is much worse in Uganda, but there are still plenty of people in America that are living on the streets.
Why is it that in the lib's mind America always comes second?

Rahm Emanuel is a socialist and a political thug. The first story I read about him is how he threatens Democrats who do not vote according to his dictates. He stabbed a restaurant table with a steak knife when someone mentioned a polical rival. As for his brother the Doctor, I read that he was appointed to President Obama's Healthcare Advisory Panle becuase of his "Physician's" philosophy of cutting off medical treatment for the elderly because the youth will deserve the Government's public health funds over those who have already lived their lives and do not contribute to society in retirement. Dr. Emanuel's medical policy indicates that as Obama's Policy advisor he plays the role of that of a Jewish Dr. Mengele. I do not find this family to be exemplary in any way and I am not proud of him or his Physician brother.

It is absolutely disgusting and entirely ignorant to compare Dr. Emanuel to Dr. Mengele. Dr. Emanuel, like many gemaras and rishonim, wrestles with the issue of how to deal with with inadequate resources when it comes to life and death decisions. Of course, we would always like to keep everyone alive and healthy 'ad me'ah v'esrim.' But we don't always have resources to do that.

Take the simple example of a 90 year old and 20 year old who both come into the emergency room for a liver transplant and you have only one liver. Whom do you give it to? What if one came first? What if they came at the exact same moment? What if one is already on the brink of death?

There are no simple answers to these questions, but someone who doesn't consider them before their hypotheticals become real-life scenarios for them (doctors, hospitals) are foolish and may be chayav of lo tirtzach.

Maybe for the same reason that conservatives run to the Middle East to "liberate" Muslims to the tune of trillions of taxpayer dollars, while neglecting to liberate hard-working Americans. At least the Ugandans are better off for it; the same can't be said of Iraq and Afghanistan.

those homeless Americans often choose to be homeless. there's help available, if they decide to take it. Ugandans don't have that option

Just like the 2 brothers, they joined IDF through some civilian program for the wealthy Americans wanting to pretend that they served in IDF for a week by hanging around generals with their uniforms. Rahm painted rusty IDF trucks for couple of weeks and he feels he has fulfilled his duty. If Rahm's family would not have the money to donate to IDF causes, no one would bother letting him waste their time painting rusty trucks in his IDF uniform.

You actually believe that? About Americans or Israelis for that matter CHOOSING to be homeless? We would have been homeless had we not come to Israel. We were in a part of the US where Jews are mostly assimilated and to be observant and not want to work on Shabbat is a minority opinion. My husband couldn't find other work and the EEOC refused to take a case against ANY employer who made Saturday work a requirement. The choice was either violate Shabbat or have a roof over our heads. So in that sense I guess, it was our choice. But for the gentiles or others, very few prefer the streets to having someplace warm, dry and safe. You really think any sane woman chooses the streets?

i know it for fact. of course, it's a big question if these people are fully 'sane', but from what i know, you can't force a person to go into a shelter or hospital, if they don't want to. it regards to alcoholics, druggies, people with some psych issues etc. there is help and housing available, yet quite a few folks get too picky for their situation, and refuse it altogether, even at the cost of winding up on street
as for your situation, all Jews a 100 years ago faced that dilemma in NYC and other major emigration places; very few if any went homeless. it comes with the territory: if you don't want to ditch Shabbos for survival, don't live or work in places where this problem might arise. although, admittedly, those lawyers that refused to take your husband's side, did a poor job and perhaps the matter should've been taken farther

and by the way, frankly i don't think every woman (or man) appearing as homeless and begging for money, actually is. cases of people pretending to be homeless beggars and then going to nice houses to rest away, and paying for those houses' mortgage with the very charity they jgot from passers-by on the street, are pretty well-known

so it's the family's fault somehow, that they actually have money, and donate it to IDF? and hey, someone's gotta paint trucks, too: not everyone can be a Givati. and personally, i know a few guys who served in IDF through that program you speak of; they're not rich now, and were way poorer at the time of their service

by the way, and what's wrong with being a socialist? there are elements of socialism in Torah, just like elements of capitalism are there, too. and for the last 150 or so years, it's been mostly socialists that sympathized with us Jews in non-Jewish world. and today, 'socialist' countries of Europe are some of the most desired to live in. big deal the guy's a socialist. i'm a republican, yet i'm kool with that

#29, Socialism is Government telling the Citizenship that the Politicians running the State are entirely responsible for each Citizen's health, education and welfare. The Citizen must pay confiscutory tax rates to finance the State. Individual rights are curtailed. In most Socialist European States there is no G-d or Church or sense of community responsibiltiy. There is only the Government. The Government is expected to provide all. Interestingly, the EU is doing its best to prevent Chinese inroads to their economies. As a result, unemployment is 20% and rising in most major Cities -- Paris, London, Berlin. Youth are under-educated and unemployed. State industries are bankrupt and many expect massive shutdowns in the next five years due to lack of subsidies from the Central Government Treasuries. All in all, Socialism is the death of a Nation. Why is Communist China prosperous? Because it is only Socialist in controling media, education and the army. Individuals are able to work to build companies with low taxes and no healthcare tax burden. The Hospital System is primitive and ill patients only receive aspirin or the equivilent. That was the secret of the USA.

I've seen the 3 brothers on TV, self-promoting about how great (k'nayn-a-hora) they (and their family) are (superstars all). After vomiting, I got to think about the Yidden who believe/believed that if we shine in our contributions to the olam, anti-semitism would melt away as the goyim will all revere the Jews as models of good citizenry and brilliance. Seems like German Jewry had the same delusions back in the 30's. It's time for us to wake up. All the Jewish Nobel Prize winners and contributions to humanity will not endear us to the goyim; if anything they will fan the fires of hatred for the Jews even more.

and by the way, somehow after the neo-liberal reforms and experiments, mostly of the 90s, in many countries, in particular Russia, a lot of people believe that it's capitalism that's the death of a nation. sad, but true. as for me, neither cap-m nor soc-m in their pure form are good enough; it's the balance of them that makes free society so successful
