Brooklyn, NY - The Two Neighborhoods Where the Mice, Roaches Are

Brooklyn, NY - Half of Brownsville’s buildings are infested with mice or rats, and more than half of South Crown Heights households have roaches, according to a new city Health Department Web site.

“They should call this place ‘Mouseville,’ ” said Brownsville resident Dashawn Hampton, 23. “Mice and rats are everywhere. You see them around the buildings, and you can hear them crawling in your walls at night.”

Fifty percent of Brownsville residents reported seeing a mouse or rat in their building in the past 90 days, according to a 2008 Health Department survey.

That’s more than twice the city average of about 20% and almost twice the borough average of 26%.

Nearby South Crown Heights has a lower rate of rodent sightings - 42% - but has the worst roach infestation in Brooklyn.

Almost 56% of residents there see roaches in their households on a daily basis, according to Health Department data from 2008.

That’s well above the borough average of 33% and the city average of 29%.

“It’s disgusting,” said Renee Russell, 34, a Capital One Bank manager who lives in Crown Heights. “I see them every day.”

Brooklyn’s pest problem is mildest in Sheepshead Bay, where 93% of buildings have rodents and 17% of households have cockroaches.

Other less infested nabes include Park Slope/Carroll Gardens, Sunset Park and Bay Ridge.

The difference is that pest-infested neighborhoods have more broken-down buildings, said Daniel Kass, the Health Department’s acting deputy commissioner for environmental health.

“Where there are cracks or holes in the home, where there are a number of maintenance deficiencies, where there are leaks in the home, those are areas where there are high cockroach counts,” Kass said.

The same goes for mice and rats.

The pests can aggravate health problems such as asthma, he added.

The best way to prevent all kinds of pests, Kass said, is to make basic home repairs such as caulking cracks and crevices and patching holes in walls, and cleaning up garbage.

“People can do a lot on their own,” Kass said. “It takes a little bit of work, but it’s well worth the effort.”

It used to be that filthy homes had mice, today they are all over. Those of us who live in houses that are attached, get them from our neighbors. The mice problem is not limited to filthy homes or filthy neighborhoods anymore.

And if you live perfectly they will come and live with you. Visit a home Depot and see the growing section with solutions. There must be lots of business.
Mice are controlled by eliminating any possible entry point, any crack, open window etc.

Glue traps are good! I got mice from a neighbor one year. I put coarse steel wool under the woodwork all around the apt. and invested in an extension on the door entrance. You buy it at any hardware store. Have never seen a mouse since!! It has been years!! The hardware store I bought it at is even out of business a few years. He moved to Israel.

I live in my house for 26 years & never had any extermination services & never had a roach or mouse in my apartment. I manage buildings in Brooklyn & see how they live in Crown Heights & other areas, filthy, dirty, greasy & plain out discusting, this brings the mice & roaches. Do they ever move their stove & fridge to clean behind them? You wont even see the regular cleaning products in their apartment, Mr.Clean, Easy Off, Fantastic, Clorox. Forget about it its just the filth & dirty way of living that brings the rodents. But of course no one will say that. Its the Landlords fault, there is a hailine crack in the wall & that brings the rodents, come on get real

There's no question that keeping a clean home is the main answer to any pest infestation problem. Any exterminator will tell you that. Of course if the owners of the buildings don't take care of the building then the pests end up in the walls and basement. The answer for tenants is to keep your own apartment clean, use commercially available extermination products and get your own exterminator once in 3 months. It'll send all those pests to your neighbors.

In nyc it doesn't make a difference how clean your house is of course the problem is bigger in none clean apartments but the rodent population is so big in ny that they go into clean houses as well because they need the space

Insect and rodent problems can and do get worse when there is an attached house or apartment situation but most times the problems start with filthy neighboors. The areas sited in this story with the worst problems are inhabited by many people with little regard to proper social skills such as throwing the garbage out in proper containers, allowing the floors to become dumping grounds for whatever lands there etc etc. I agree with posters #1 and 3...it's the people who need to clean up their acts and stop putting the blame on everyone else.

I lived in a house for 42 years without infestation, you are right clean the top of the stove and under the stove, move the frig. and don't let your children shlep cookies all over the place. Excellent instructions

ok here is my experience with roaches. When I fixed all the leaking faucets and replaced the air vents on all my radiators, I have not seen one roach since. Apparently, water from leaking pipes and faucets and humidity from leaking radiators attracts all types roaches and bugs and when that source is gone your roach problems are gone. As for rodents, gaps in doors or floors and walls should be plugged as well.

I agree. We have the exterminator in weekly and still have bedbugs and roaches. We even replaced the mattresses and have them in the new mattresses. Now my youngest came home from school with lice.
