Montreal, Canada - Police seized a large quantity of alcohol from an Outremont synagogue.
Officers say they’ve been warning the synagogue for years to stop buying alcohol in bulk from Ontario.
The alcohol, which is much cheaper in Ontario, is served at religious ceremonies.
Police confiscated over 900 litres of alcohol, including Kosher wine.
According to Quebec law, such large amounts must be purchased from the SAQ.
No charges have been laid so far and the synagogue says it will fight the law if any arrests are made.
VIN News sources, have identified the Synagogue as Skver

Yes, it is socialist, but the profits from this alcohol monopoly contribute to the cost of Jewish education. It is disgusting that we accept money from the government while trying to cheat it out of the very revenues that get funneled to us. Why must we give the anti-Semites such ammunition?

I could easily see this scenario playing out in states like New Hampshire or Virginia where all booze must be purchased from a state liquor store. Large-scale "importation" from non liquor-commission states (where prices might be lower or selection better) will deprive state/provincial revenue. Judging from the article it seems that SAQ (Société des alcools du Québec) controls all wine and beer sales (NH and VA only control the hard stuff) which makes things even more interesting.

In Canada the Government simply stole the alcohol market from the people, just like they did with other things like auto-insurance. However, and you can google this, Clergy may purchase wine for sacramental use. They goyim have no idea that we all make kiddush etc. and for this reason we use thousands of time more sacramental wine than other clergy l'havdil. Still, you can be right, but the strong arm of socialism does crack down unlawfully from time to time. Here in particular, the Quebec government is loosing so much in taxes. Another point. Some years ago when there was a referendum whether or not Quebec should separate from the rest of Canada, the then defeated leader blamed the "ethnic" ones, a euphemism for the Jews. The Catholic, French speaking Quebec population are not the most enamored group of people.

can one imagine a clearer case of violating dina de'malchusa? they should say an extra tefillah for the medinat chesed of canada if no one is arrested. 900 liters is 75 cases - either one fabulous kiddush club or perhaps there may be yet more to this story.

Why do you think that is any different than bootleg cigarettes or wine/alcohol here in New York? Or should we not pay taxes?

Of course it was kosher wine at a shul. It must be a huge shul or one that's full of drinkers for such a quantity.

I am not a socialist, but this response shows a definite lack of knowledge of politics and economics. The strong arm of socialism did not illegally crack down. It is the law of the state. If the Yidden do not like living in a socialist environment they should move. Over the years. because of anti-semitism and other issues, many Jews have moved out of Quebec. Socialism is an economic system. A socialist state can be voted for in a democracy. Capitalism is an economic system. A capitalist state can be voted for in a democracy. As an aside the Shule could have bought the wine in Quebec and not acted illegally.

The journalist on the French radio and TV said the shul was located on the corner of Lajoie and Durocher in Outremont. According to my knowledge of Montreal, that's Skver. This really has been given a negative spin on the French media, saying: "The Hassidic community refuses to conform to the laws and buy their alcohol from the SAQ like everyone else".

to number 29 - everything was done in a completely illegal manner. The authorities were very considerate in warning Skver several times. This is an extra warning to several other moisdos who are engaging in similar activities. In Canada each province has a mandated agency to sell all wine and spirit products. They have an authorized list. However, other items can usually be imported as long as the SAQ gets its tax.

Why would you think that it is a Lubavitch shul?
What a transparent prejudice.
My husband is the rav of a very large Lubavitch shul and we buy ALL our wine and alcohol from the SAQ only and the SAQ only - and conform strictly to every detail of the tax and donor laws.
Just comes to show you the inherent prejudice by some.

The sad statistic comes from the Aleph Institute of Florida which serves the religious needs of Jewish inmates in State and Federal prisons across the United States. In addition, Aleph also proudly serves the religious needs of Jewish members of the armed services. Aleph indicates that there are presently 5 to 6,000 Jews sitting in prisons. Of that number, approximately 1,200 are Othodox, a category which includes modern Orthtodox, Yeshivish, as well as Chasidish. Please bear in mind that the highest percentage of the population of any country in prison is that of the United States.

bottom line canada is a major medina shel chesed, especially quebec. there isnt another city in the whole north america that gives such a yiddish education for its children for such a low tuition fee! why, because the quebec govt. gives 3000 dollars per student per year for schools, even private ones that spend most of the day teaching torah ..... besides all the govt money for child support free medical , parental leave money after birth, csst money when u become pregnant, drugs and prescriptions heavily subsidized ect. it goes on and on. keep the law and dont rock the boat.

Why single-out the french. They all did.
