Brooklyn, NY - The Jewish Press, America’s largest independent Jewish weekly, will host a debate between candidates for New York City Council seat to be vacated by Simcha Felder. The district (the 44th) covers most of the heavily Jewish Boro Park section of Brooklyn, as well as parts of Midwood and Bensonhurst.

The debate will take place Wednesday, February 24, 7 pm, at the Boro Park YMHA at 4910 14th Ave. in Brooklyn. The candidates will answer questions from a panel of Jewish Press reporters and editors, from the audience, and from residents who had submitted questions in advance.

The candidates are
-David Greenfield is executive vice president of the Sephardic Community Federation
-Joe Lazar has worked at several posts in local government, including as budget director for the city’s Department of Buildings
-Jonathan Judge, president of the Brooklyn Young Republicans
- Nachman C. Caller, Esq. Brooklyn, NY

“As a voice that has been trusted in the community for 50 years,” said Jerry Greenwald, the General Manager of The Jewish Press, “we feel a responsibility to present the candidates to the public and ask the questions that residents want asked—indeed many of the questions will come from our Boro Park readers.”

Felder has been appointed to the position of Deputy Comptroller for the city by the new Comptroller, John Liu

Good move by the Jewish Press. There might be at least one more candidate: Menachem Kaller. Either way, the JP is doing a good thing by bring the candidates together and having them side by side when the important questions about our neighborhood will be asked. Good Luck and may the best man for the neighborhood win !!

I think this should be a precedent. Let the Jewish Press start with this public forum debate and next they should have the two Bobover Rebbes debate in a public forum. Would be sure to attract a nice crowd. And if that works out amicably, they should move on to Satmar etc. Finally the Jewish Press coming through for the community. It took 50 years, but hey, better late than never.

Who in BP reads anything anymore. The JP decided to do this on their own. This is a good thing for everyone. You don't have to read the JP to go to the debate.

I don't think that in a place like boro park debates count

Whoever will get the endorsement of the yeshivas will get the votes
And since lazar is endorsed by all yeshivas besides bobov 48 who will most probably also endorse him greenfeld don't stand a chance

The problem is that the people you want to debate have nothing to contrbute to a debate if not for some genetics & police they would have been unemployed

Of course many people vote for the opposite but they are a very small minority
Remember lander vs hayer? Lander had all the endorsements and hayer had the yeshvos and got 82 percent in bp vs 12 percent for lander

first get your facts straight ,not all mosdoses are on board yet, its many more than just Bobov, they are all waiting for bobov decision. bobov is the only one that both candidates are running after, they know bobov Vote comes as a block of over 2000 votes and they are very enthusiastic about this election and they will come out in droves and will tip this election to whom ever they endorse

not only are lazar and greenfild waiting on bobov so are many of the larger mosdoses waiting

The 2 candidates are running after everyone from satmar to bayan amunas yisrual karlin and Bobov 48 and 45 and course belz and viznitz
Also you need to face reality
Bobov has 1400 families in boro park before the split now its 850 for bobov 48 and 750 for bobov 45 and since they are not a block vote they are group # 3 and 4 in bp
Wake up and smell the coffee

Sorry to break your heart the two most powerfull things in boro park is Dov Hiking and Bobov and that's why we are all waiting to hear that bobov is joining hikind and lazar we all know that these two power brokers in boro park need to get together for lazar to win this race untill that dosnt happen lazar has no chance of winning this election lazar hiking greenfeld agudah they all know it and trust me they are working their hats off to make this happen

What bobov do you consider a power broker? 45? Or 48?

Btw hikind is indeed a power broker but he learned his lesson from the lander campaign when he lost with 10 percent vs 82 percent the other candidate has (and yes bobov 48 was in the 10 percent voters lander had)

But this time hikind was smarter and discussed it tugahter with the yeshivas and the aguda which is now the most powerful vote block in boro park

This is an alert to all residents of Boro Park on the City Council race

The reace for the seat vacated by Simcha Felder has now turned ugly, where fliers of endorsments and denials are coming a mile a minute. BUT, here is one issue that all residents of Boro park should look into.

David Greenfield has sent out fliers that he is endorsed by State Assmblyman Vito Lopez, who is the biggest racist next to Al Sharpton the city has ever seen, we in Williamsburg have suffered from this biggot and racist for over 25 years.

The entire housing lawsuits that caused the Jewish Community to be locked out from getting any apartments in the New York City Housing Authority, Bedford Gardens and Clemente Plaza is all to his credit.

All you need is to google Vito Lopez and Housing in Williamsburg and you will get results that your eyes will pop, at the same time is the most corrupt elected official that has been investigated by the NY Post, Daily news and the Village Voice.

Extortion, manipulation, black mail and political kickbacks is his specialty in construction, he calls it "Contributions".

Feb 02, 2010 at 10:32 PM The candidate said Says:

Just last week the residents in Williamsburg got the response from the newly elected City Council person Steve Levin, who was Lopez chief of staff who testified at the City Planning opposing the Rose Development that is owened by Certifid Lumber to build husing on the site. that was his FIRST agenda.

Boro Park, if Joe Lazar should be endorsed by Al Sharpton or David Duke Joe would have hell to pay, please don't make the same mistake as so called leaders in Williamsburg who voted against the Jewsih candiadte to go with and anti-semit's candidate.

We know you are a lot more educated and involved, don't let your self be driven by phony letters and releases look at the candidates friends and surrounding, atitude tone of voice, humor and style and you will agree with me that LAZAR is your choice and only choice.

Ask yourself when the Mayor was at his Yeshiva (never heard off) where was Belz, Vishnitz, Bobov, Satmar, Ger, etc no where-now he wants them on board WOW

I'm shocked that people even consider Bobov (any for that matter)as a power broker since the last Rebbe was niftar no one looks at bobov in BP as a power broker they are the 3-4th biggest group with satmar being larger belz as well then maybe 48 and then 45 but if you have Belz & satmar automatically the rest will follow but I hope everyone unites for JOE LAZAR because he's a real mentsch

Mr math get real

Bobov 48 can't have more voters then they have people

All they have in boro park all districts together are 800 families
Take off some that live in other districts and those who are registered and Israelis and Europeans and you stay with a few hundred votes not a big deal
I understand that people run after them nobody wants a split in block vote but all the politicians know today that the glory times of bobov are over since the split (not that they were so huge before the split)

I was there when the Mayor came to the Barki Yeshiva on 53rd Street and 21 Avenue. Yes Satmar was there and lots of other administrators from boro park yeshivas. Bobov was not there cause they are on the program way before the Mayor made this annoucment.

Do you know why this annoucment was made with David Greenfield cause he was the one that got the Mayor to deliver this program to our yeshivas here in Boro Park and Williamsburg and Flatbush.

Lets give credit where credit is due be fair and don't spread false rumors.

Which Satmar are you from?
Rabbi Neiderman is delivering to the people in Williamsburg all these years thanx to Vito Lopez, Maybe if David gets elected Vito will start delivering to Boro Park too. Why don't you look at it this way? Who cares how bad Vito is and he raises his money for campaigns, I care when I go into the booth to vote on who will deliver to the community organizations and who will deliver to the Yeshivas, thats it what counts to me.

In Bensonhurst and in Midwood, Hikind, Bobov, Satmar, Belz, Klausenburg, Vizhnitz and Ger don't carry any weight at all.
So much for the notion that Bobov will make it or break it...

Actually it was the Agudah that started working on the tutoring thing and the money owed by the city to yeshivas under title I. Greenfeld just came in at the last minute and took credit for it like he does with everything else.call agudah and ask them. They'll tell you.
