Oswiecim, Poland - Cat at Auschwitz Gains Media Attention |
|
Oswiecim, Poland - A cat living at the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz has caused fur to fly between an animal care group and Polish authorities refusing to allow a shelter to be built for it.
The grey and white cat, known variously as Rudolf or Bruno despite being female, can often be seen sitting near the notorious “Arbeit macht frei” (“Work sets you free”) sign at the entrance to the camp.
She has seemed unperturbed by an unusually cold winter in Poland that has seen night temperatures dip as low as minus 34 Celsius (minus 29 Fahrenheit).
The museum that runs the camp has rejected a call from the group For Animals to build a cat shelter, saying other animals also live at the site and that visitors are its main priority.
“All we asked for was to erect a shelter, but we were refused,” said Joanna Zaremba of the For Animals foundation.
A museum employee tried in vain to give the animal a home.
“The cat was not used to being indoors and the employee had to let her out to feel free. She came straight back (to the camp) like a boomerang, back to the ‘Arbeit macht frei’ gate,” said Adam Cyra, another member of staff.
The cat is believed to have arrived at the camp about six months ago and started to attract the attention of visitors after Polish newspapers and websites reported on the animal’s attachment to the site and the campaign to build a shelter.
“I came especially to see this cat as I’ve heard so much about it in the local media,” one Polish visitor told Reuters Television. “I’m ready to adopt the cat and give her a home.”
While the cat has been staying near the entrance, a gang stole the “Arbeit macht frei” sign. Polish police later recovered the sign, cut into three pieces, and arrested five suspects over the crime.
Up to 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, perished at Auschwitz during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War Two. The site, near the town of Oswiecim in southern Poland, received more than one million visitors last year.

The "animal rights" group is nothing of the sort. This cat has obviously chosen of its own free will to live where it does. Why should a shelter be built for it by anyone?

It may be that the cat is a gilgul neshamah that is fulfilling its mission. I often wonder about my cats. My boy often sits and learns Gemarah with me. He listens to my peshat but never asks a kasha or corrects me. At least not yet !!!

You have to love how the Poles are rushing to care for a stray cat, but when it was human beings being tortured and murdered there everyone went about their business and kept quiet.

your'e so right! i wish they would have worried about the millions of jews that tortured, gassed, froze and starved to death.... cats they have rachmanus on!! i have nothing against cats but how can they have rachmanus on a cat and not on a person?!! when the weather gets really cold i often think about the holocaust victims, prisoners and survivors who wore little more than pajamas in some of the coldest weathers.....

Poles fought with the Nazis in 1939 and had the biggest resistance movement in occupied Europe. They did an insurrection in Warsaw in 1944 in which more than 200,000 non-Jewish Poles died - the rest of the population was removed from the city (many ended up in concentration camps) and the city was then burnt to the ground. They fought on every front in Europe. How is that "keeping quiet"? How do you imagine they could defeat the Nazis and liberate concentration camps prisoners? And if they could, why didn't they save and protect the 3 millions non-Jewish Poles who died in this war?

You wouldn't think your comment was cute if you or someone in your family was in a medical crises now necessitating one.

Wow this a first, a Jewish apologist for the Polisha anti-Semites. One of the main reasons the nazi pigs built the death camps in Poland was because they knew it would not perturb the Polish citizens.

No. There is absolutely no proof for that. Camps were built in Poland because that's where the overwhelming majority of the victims were. And you haven't replied to what you think Poles could do. Any concrete ideas?

the reason the Nazis (YMSH) built the extermination camps in Poland was because of it's central location and good rail connections. The Germans held Poles in just slightly higher regard than that in which they held us.
