Borough Park, NY - Joe Lazar and David Greenfield, the two candidates who are vying to replace the City Council Seat vacated by Simcha Felder in the 44th district, continue to spend much of their time lining up endorsements and courting the Orthodox Jewish community.

Both recently made campaign trips far outside their district to Williamsburg.

Large numbers of Satmar Hasidic Jews have lived in both Williamsburg and Borough Park for decades as residents have moved from smaller quarters in Williamsburg to larger properties in Borough Park and vice versa.

Hasidic-owned businesses have branches in both neighborhoods, and a private bus line featuring direct service from Lee Avenue to 13th Avenue runs twice an hour.

“We are one community,” said Williamsburg resident Moishe Indig. “The Satmar community is in Williamsburg, Borough Park. It’s one big family.”

Both Greenfield and Lazar made the Williamsburg journey looking to win Satmar Rebbe Aaron Teitelbaum’s blessing and shore up support from members of the sprawling Satmar sect, the third largest in Borough Park.

Greenfield attended a post-marriage ceremony, known as the seven blessings ceremony, with over 1,500 guests, that was held for Teitelbaum’s granddaughter.

Lazar appeared at a smaller fundraising dinner for a Satmar college, known as a koleo, which Rebbe Teitelbaum attended.

Sources that fear upsetting either the Greenfield or Lazar camp say both are playing strong-arm politics in the tight-knit religious Jewish neighborhoods.

The Borough Park Satmar community was promised if they support Greenfield he will help repair the Williamsburg Satmar community’s relationship with Kings County Democratic boss Vito Lopez, because the Aaron Teitelbaum faction in Williamsburg has had a strained relationship with Lopez, said one source.

Greenfield also picked up the support of Mayor Bloomberg last week, but thus far is finding it hard to get people in Borough Park to openly support him.

This could be because Assemblymember Dov Hikind appears to be pulling out all the stops in getting the word out that whoever backs Greenfield will have no access to him or State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, said another source.

Bobov Hasidic Jews, of which there are a good many in Borough Park, are still being courted by both Lazar and Greenfield.

“It’s (the election) turning into a very nasty thing, but it’s nothing I didn’t expect,” said one highly placed Borough Park source.

Dov has been on the mark in the past with everyone he has endorsed. We would have to be nuts not to believe in him. (Remember he got us Simcha Felder). He's
brought us a lot of funding for so many Mosdos in the past. If he says Joe Lazar is good stuff, I'm going with him.

Just for the records the Williamsburg community is not looking for some one to repair the problem! The ongoing problem is assemblyman Vito low-paz for
His beaver like making problems for the residence in housing projects, Williams’s plaza housing, independent project, Shafer housing, Etc. the list can go on and on.
He was never our assemblyman at our district he never liked us and never will,
In the other hand Greenfield happens to be a nice person but be carful don’t be abused by people have and will abuse you.
Borough park should learn a lesson how to work in politics especially after having a fine person like councilman Felder.

I find it so interesting that the posts and articles all look for one thing in a council member - free handouts. The whole thing is a farce. Basically whoever promises more money gets the vote. Please don't reply to my post saying why not the schvartsas get the handouts and so should we.

They are vying to fill the seat, not replace the seat. They are vying to replace Felder.

Joe Lazar spoke at an Igud meeting tonight. He committed himself to honestly representing our community and to take a reasonably firm stand against any issues that are against family values. He learned in the yeshivas, his children went to our yeshivas, and his grandchildren are now in our yeshivas. Joe Lazar is a straightforward mench and he has EARNED our vote. Mazel and Bracha !!!!

As I Know Dovid greenfield he has always been a mensch. I am grateful to those that while saying they will vote for lazar instead of him still realize that. However, I will say to some posters that say that Dovid doesnt know the community well enough, just because he doesn't come from boro park does not mean that he doesn't understand your needs. Ironically, dov hikind who most people in Boro Park will say has done much for the community wears a Kippa Sruga and is very zionistic. However, when it comes to helping other Jews outer differences are cast aside. Dovid greenfield is the same way he can and will understand you.If you still want to vote for Lazar gezunteheit but saying that greenfield didnt grow up in Boro Park isn't reason enough.
