The probe was launched after a group of anti-fascists filed a complaint about the snowman, which was found outside a Schorndorf pub, near the southern city of Stuttgart.

German law forbids the use of nazi symbols or the promotion of National Socialism.

Unable to find the culprit, and the evidence having melted away, the case has been dropped.

“Not every likeness of Hitler is a forbidden symbol,” the spokesperson, Claudia Krauth, told the German Press Agency dpa.

Hitler is a frequent pop culture reference. There have been dozens of references to him on Family Guy (riding a unicycle, working out in a women’s gym); in South Park (Cartman pretended to be Hitler); in Monty Python (innumerable sketches); in The Simpsons (fumbling with a cell phone while his hands are full and not getting the call); in an entire British series called Heil Honey, I’m Home; and dozens of Hitler videos on Youtube like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5t6JWuW7qE.

Don’t these anti-fascists have anything bertter to do than go looking for snowmen and filing ridiculous complaints? It does not make them look like heros. It just makes them look like a bunch of sniveling and hypersensitive whiners.

Too much ado over just a snowman. Don’t the German police have anything better to do with their time than listening to tapirs whineing?

I suppose a Goering snowman would have been out of the question – not enough snow in the Alps to make one up … This gave me a bit of a laugh, anyway …
