Washington - Harlem Democrat Charles Rangel now says he will step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, NBC News has learned.

He may make the move as early as tonight and Michigan Democratic Rep Sander Levin will temporarily take over the committee.

Some details still need to be ironed out, but sources said Rangel has been pushed to step down before the House voted on a bill to forcefully strip him of the coveted chairmanship.

But AP is reporting that Rangel denies he is stepping down from House Ways and Means chairmanship.

What they got him on was the least of his offenses. What about his FOUR rent-controlled apartments, all while he declared his primary residence to be in DC? Or his car being put up at taxpayer's expense? Or his place in the Dominican Republic that was producing tax-free income for him?

Because democrats only care about corruption if it's a republican.

He shouldn't "step down." He should be removed. And then he should be expelled from Congress, for the sake of the institution's dignity-- or what little it may be said to have left.

I just don't understand what the whole hullabaloo is at a time when our Secretary of the Treasury is a tax cheat, guys who almost madxe it into the cabinet just forgot to report income (for which you and I would go to jail for) and let's not forget that we have a president who nobody knows where he was born with the general consensus being that he was born in Kenya (which happens not to be in the United States). Charlie Rangel is a thief and should go to jail but of course everyone is afraid of Al "Tubby" Sharpton.
