Jerusalem - The Israeli military says a planned raid on a West Bank village was called off after an Israeli soldier disclosed its details online.

The military says the combat soldier posted the time and location of the raid on his Facebook page saying that troops were planning on “cleaning up” the village.

Fellow soldiers reported the leak to military authorities, who called off the raid fearing that the information may have reached hostile groups. The soldier was court-martialed and sentenced to 10 days in prison.

The military’s statement Wednesday added that it is cracking down on soldiers’ use of social networking Web sites and has launched a campaign warning of the dangers of sharing military classified information online.

IDF is to blame for its very lax policy on discipline. You can't be soft with 18-23 year olds, especially with wild Israeli youth who have no concept of discipline. You don't see NATO or U.S. soldiers typing detailed information about operations in Afghanistan because these soldiers are very disciplined and they know the court martial would send them to 5 years in prison NOT 10 days.

THe military shoudl konw that if the give information out it may end up on the internet. this is the time we live in. this guy was quite dim. but that said. whats the likelihood that it really would make the operation a failure. he posted to his facebook. not arab jihad page. i doubt that a palestinian guy living in the focus area woudl have gotten the word of this operation from an israelis semiprivate facebook page. they probably shoudl have gon e ahead with the op. (unless there is more we dont know). i mean was there really enough time for the people in the attack area to prepare and avoid the attack. ? looks like they know now.

These are harsh words you use. he is neither
no one died bt the way ( so how canhe be a murderer?)
perhaps if smart people such as yourself re-enlisted in the IDF ( i assume you served by your name) then you could teach these 18 year old children and teach them critical thinking

The IDF also do not allow cellphones on the front line in case they give away secrets & details of their movements.

LMAO, Rabbonim assured Facebook because they don't want people to speak the truth that will cast a negative light on the realities of our communities. There is no sensitive intelligence that you can reveal about rabonim.

On the other hand, we get "reporters" like Geraldo Rivera who, while embedded with the Coalition forces, draw maps in the sand to tell the viewers where his unit is.. and where they'll be attacking...

I was thinking the same thing. he should have been tried for treason. What if a regular civilian would have posted that information? Dan Rather should have also been tried for treason. Prior to the second gulf war he conducted and "interview" of some general where rather revealed many of the weak points of the army's equipment and tactics. If a regular civilian would have donr he would have been tried convicted and imprisoned for a long time. The press do not deserve special consideration when it comes to the lives of our troops.

I think you could've stopped at stupid. I think traitor and rotzeiach are a bit too much.

What can we expect when every single 18 year old kid is expected to all of a sudden become a soldier in the army? I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

The kid should definitely be seriously reprimanded, but he's not an enemy of the state (he might even be a victim of the state.)
