New Jersey - Police issued 224,725 citations for violations of the state’s cell phone law in the last 23 months, officials announced today.

“We are making progress in our efforts to ensure that all motorists are aware of the consequences they face if they choose to talk on a cell phone or text while driving,” Division of Highway Traffic Safety Director Pam Fischer said in a statement. “Any cell phone conversation while driving, whether handheld or hands-free, is distracting and dangerous, and can result in crashes, injuries, and in some cases the loss of life.”

In the last two years, there have been 3,610 crashes involving drivers using a handheld phone, resulting in 13 deaths, officials said.

New Jersey has banned drivers from texting or talking on handheld cell phones since March 2008.

DON'T TALK OR TEXT WHILE DRIVING

In Far Rockaway, a member of NYPD has reportedly written false tickets stating this or that lady or even rabbi was using a cell phone while driving--in one case, he asked the lady for her phone, then noted the minute she last used it (some 20 minutes before he stopped her), then wrote a ticket for the time she was using it. In two other cases, he wrote tickets for use of cell phones by rabbis who do not even own cell phones.

The local email list refused to post a notice about this corrupt cop, seeking more information.

Beware! Cops have quotas and use of a cell phone is a 'big ticket' item.

This type of ticketing is not right. Some people are talented and can multi-task by driving and texting at the same time. They should not be penalized on account of other less talented motorists. Why does this rule need to be "one size fits all?". There should be a special test given by the DMV on a drivers ability to do certain activities while driving and be granted such privileges. For example, some people can drive, talk on the phone, chew bubble gum, text, shave and/or put on lipstick at the same time...

They can pull over to lay tefillin, is what choice they have. Which is what they would do if they were such "ehrliche" yidden, rather than endangering other peoples' lives. It's just plain selfish!

some people can tolerate alcohol too yet you hopefully agree that in way to many instances the drunk was the one to tolerate it while the innocent fatality was the one who didn't.
let's be open. drive wherever you want and you'll be able to tell from a mile away who's talking on their phone just by watching their delayed response. NO PEOPLE ARENT TALENTED. Rather they're over confident. which translates to accidents.

You are absolutely right. We should educate and teach the drunks ahead of time to keep away from the innocent and to focus entirely on the guilty. Also, perhaps Obama can use some "stimulating" money to build some superhighways restricted and to be used only by drivers that drink and text.. Maybe even charge an entrance fee, tax or toll for the privilege of its use. This way America - properly stimulated - can continue living out the promise of its forefathers and continue to be "the land of the free and the home of the brave."
