Israel - Ministry Orders Holocaust Education for All Students, Not Just On Poland Trip |
|
Archived PhotoIsrael - All 11th graders will take part in preparations for Holocaust-education trips to Poland, not just students who are actually going on the journeys, an Education Ministry committee has decided.
The director of the International Institute for Holocaust Studies, Aya Ben-Naftali, said that the move would redress an imbalance in the way Holocaust-education resources are distributed.
“For years we made the mistake of directing all the attention the organizational and educational toward delegations to Poland, while most students were forgotten and received nothing,” she said.
Some 25,000 students have gone on trips to Poland in recent years, usually in 11th grade. Preparations include one- or two-day seminars in 10 commemorative centers throughout the country, among them Yad Vashem, Ben-Naftali’s institution and the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum at Kibbutz Lohamei Haghetaot. Some 25 to 30 percent of 11th graders take part in the seminars (not including Arab and ultra-Orthodox students).
According to the head of the Education Ministry unit that administers the Poland trips, Eli Shayish, around 100,000 students will now take the seminars.
“The decision will allow students who are going to Poland, as well as those who are not, to experience and discuss various aspects of the Holocaust,” Shayish said.
He said funding for scholarships for trips to Poland has grown from NIS 1 million to NIS 6 million, and the request process is easier than in the past.
A study by the Knesset Research and Information Center shows that most independently sponsored school trips to Poland are by students from wealthier families.
An official close to the situation said the new policy will affect mainly students from the state secular and religious school systems. “The intention is not to force Haredi or Arab students to take part in preparations for the trip to Poland,” he said. “The Education Ministry can only recommend and encourage these sectors [to participate].”
Ben-Naftali said that at one time no formal Holocaust workshops were offered, then a whole grade took them, from which a delegation went to Poland. Today, however, “things are done on an economic basis,” which has left children out.

Does anyone know the percentage of Arabs and Charedim that go on these trips? I'm guessing more Arabs than Charedim.

Why are the chareidi schools exempted from the requirement to study the holocaust. There were many frume yidden among the 6 million kadoshim so they should have the same interest in assuring that their children know what the nazia did, especially since many of them don't have access to the internet or TV

I think that's ridiculous. Besides, who said it was necessarily a punishment? Did Hashem send you an email that the rest of us didn't get?
In last weeks parsha Chur died when trying to stop the Erev Rav from doing the Egel. Furthermore, the pasuk says Aharon saw and he understood, meaning he didn't try to stop them by giving mussar because they would have killed him too. Do you understand this? How can it be that the Tzaddik Chur died while trying to prevent the Egel and how can it be that Aharon who it says is Shakul to Moshe Rabbeinu would have suffered the same fate??!! He was Kadosh Kadoshim!!!
The Emes is, Nistarim darkei Hashem. We cant understand what Hashem does in this world. Sometimes we can try to give Terutzim. However in the next world everything will become clear.

We don't understand why Gd allowed the holocaust to happen.
Perhaps that is too scary for some people to admit and that is why they don't want their kids to discuss it.
It would lead to questions that can only be answered by 'we don't know'.

It doesn't matter how many were drum or not. EVERY SINGLE JEW that died was a kadosh, frum or not. That's probably the reason they don't teach Holocaust, because it puts Jews of all walks of life on the same playing field.

Just to be sure I understand you correctly - If all the people killed were non-frum their murder should not be of any concern to the charaidim?

Maybe if everyone studied the holocaust, both in EY and the U.S., then people would stop calling each other or anyone they disagree with a "Nazi" and stop insulting the people who were killed by true nazi's.

As concentration camp survivor I wholly agree with you but sad reality is quite different. Here in Baltimore except for Bais Yaakov [because Rabbi Steinberg A'H], TA and Rambam nobody touches or talks about the Kedoshim. I was told a by a sheitel wearing woman who says "Gott fin Avraham" you have to look forward and forget about it. Just take a poll among the yungeleit in "EretzYisroel" how many ever set a foot in the Yad Vashem. The only time they become interested when Germany releases funds than everybody is a survivor

i work in a chassidishe school and i can tell you that poster is absolutely correct, they won't teach the holocaust because it raises too many questions about reward and punishment. even though we cannot know why it happened, and we cannot know what it was punishment for (or if it even was punishment at all) but it certainly seems like a punishment. i happen to disagree with how the chassidim handle it, but that's the way it is.

Re; to # 13. None other than Horav Ovdia Yosef said,it was punishment. I am sure this heiliger Yid didn't receive an e-mail from Hashem, either. How do i know ; Rav Ovadia doesn't have a computer.
