New York, NY - Big Brother is watching—and solving crime.

The NYPD’s network of silent sentries—cameras posted on lampposts across the five boroughs—has provided evidence in hundreds of criminal cases and helped cops solve an array of major crimes.

The Argus cameras are housed below large white boxes, clearly marked with the NYPD insignia, and are set about 20 feet off the ground near a warning: “NYPD Area Under Surveillance.”

The cameras, installed in 2006, have so far captured 349 images used to help investigators, police said.

In all, there are 315 cameras citywide, with the bulk of them (145) in Manhattan. Brooklyn has 75, Queens 60, The Bronx 22 and Staten Island 13.

“It’s a definite necessity,” said one veteran Brooklyn detective, who has turned to the cameras for evidence. “It’s also deterrent. People know they are there.”

There were at least four violent crimes in which the Argus cameras were instrumental in identifying perpetrators, including a murder.

“The cameras have proven to be an important law enforcement tool to deter crime and investigate past crimes,” said Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD’s chief spokesman.

why does everyone make a big deal about the intentions of the founding fathers? they lived very different lives than we do and their ideas are not perfect. when they lived, there was not this amount of crime. if u did a crime the punishment was fast and very strict. lets live with the reality of today and use what technology that we have for our benefit

Of course, they had guns. The goverment takes your guns and than they cant protect you so they invade your privacy and when that doesnt work they tap your wires etc. Before you know it we'll be living in China.

Thank you NYPD! During this era in our nation’s history, crime and terrorism are threatening the very life and freedom that our forefathers and millions of Americans have fought and died for. Criminals and Terrorists are utilizing the technology to aid them in committing unspeakable acts. God bless NYPD and their wisdom to use technology in combating crime. I do not think there would be anyone that would disagree that every NYPD officer is grossly under paid to risk his or her life they way they do every day.
This technology not only saves tax payers money but it also saves the lives of citizens and police officers. NYPD does not have the time or slightest interest in spying on any of us, simply because there is too much crime to manage. To all the people that are crying about invasion of privacy, I have two things to say to you; 1. If you are so paranoid about NYPD watching you, then stop doing what ever freaky thing it is that you are doing. 2. If you don’t like NYPD protecting you then move to another country, where nobody gives a _ _ _ _ about you or what you do.
