Montreal, Canada - Minister: We Will Ban Religion in Daycares |
|
Montreal, Canada - Family Minister Tony Tomassi, who denied on Tuesday that government-funded day-care centers are dispensing religious instruction, admitted today the practice exists, but said it would end.
“Henceforth” about 20 daycares in the province offering instruction to children from birth to five-years-of-age will not be allowed to teach religion to their children, he said.
“We will sit down with them’ Tomassi said.
News reports say that ultra-orthodox Jewish, Islamic and Christian operators of subsidized daycare centres have been offering instruction in their respective religions.
One case is that of the Beth Rivkah centre in Montreal which is run by rabbi Yosef Minkowitz. Its website states that all the “daily activities are driven by the spirit of Torah and the Jewish tradition.”
The opposition Parti Québécois objects that while Quebec has made its public-school system non-denominational, religion appeared to be slipping back through the public day-care system.

If they pay for it, they get to say how it's done.

This is a good decision. None of these schools taking a dollar in provincial funding should be engaging the kids in religious education or indoctrination. There are plenty of non-subsidized religious preschools for jewish children if the parents want this kind of environment.

They certainly do "get to say how it's done," but that doesn't mean they should be saying how it's done, or that it's good for yidden if they take away public support of our institutions. Remember--this means that yidden will have to pay more, and things like that shouldn't just be blown off with cavalier statements.

This is a wake up call for all of us. If we want to have control of what our kids should and should not learn, and how to live our lives, lets stop taking from governments. If that means to cut back, CUT BACK. No fancy buildings, no hot lunches, no school busses. None. It can be done. This is the chinuch that klal yisroel had for thousands of years. I'm confused- are these day care centers public (as in, children of all denominations attend) or are they private day cares that receive some public funds (as in, they're actually Jewish schools)? If the former, then the government is right. If the latter, the schools are right.

These citizens pay their taxes, and have biased funding. In other provinces such as Ontario subsidized day care means that low income families are able to go to work and create tax revenue for the state. If they dont get that subsidy one parent stays at home, as it doesnt pay to go to work and get someone to watch over your child/ren in most cases as the tax eats up most of the salary.(The same tax which pays for the day cares) Public school is paid by property tax and is a different issue.
Other provinces allow for religous funded schools such as Nova Scotia, just you dont hear about it as there are no Jewish schools in Nova Scotia;Quebec is unique with day care as private homes have been able to be renovated and receive funding in recent times if they had a day care in their homes of under a certain amount of kids.
Religion was not an issue as this was labled under a quasi-baby sitting service, so sufficient tax receipts/fire codes/ etc. could be met.

that's exactly why I don't want taxpayer (i.e. my) money goint to fund any form of religious education/indoctrination -- I don't want my money funding indoctrinating children with radical islamist ideas or any other religious doctrine.

Wickard vs. Filburn
No doubt, the principal decided in the above U.S. case applies in Canada too. That's why the efforts to secure funding through vouchers is foolish. Even if it were possible to win the impossible politcal battle and receive vouchers, the scheme will fail. Why? Because activists will immediately tie strings to such funding. They will demand that any school receiving funds must include some anti-Torah agendas (to'eva promotion, for example) in their curriculum. What will be the result? Torah institutions will still depend entirely on private funding while Frum parents will see their taxes increase to support the voucher programs used by those who don't mind the strings attached.

Stupid, stupid people: Please do not use your ignorance to malign excellently and professionally run Jewish institutions here.
This ain't the USA. There is no separation of Church and State, here.
The Quebec parliament is adorned with a huge cross in the assembly room. Many schools are engraved or adorned with crosses. Until very recently, the public schools were classified under the Catholic school public school system or the Protestant school system. Even the national anthem invokes the cross in the French rendition: "il sait porter la croix.."
The pre-school program is a universal program, much like health care. Private and public facilities are entitled to it, as this is a socialist state, and this considered a universal right, not privilege, regardless of your race, colour or creed. Thats the law here.
What many of you ignoramus' fail to realize is that there is a small minority of white french supremacists that constantly harass people of other linguistic and religious groups that are not French Catholic. The masses are very provincial and prone to xenophobic tendencies, and are incited by ultra-nationalist journalists and media, which in turn leads to this type of story.

The Jewish day Schools have been receiving subsidies for secular studies since 1968. When the PQ came into power in 1976, the increased hours of French instruction began to rise. The daycares within the day schools have been funded for more than 30 years. This is not specific to the Jewish schools. Daycare is capped at $7.00 per day per child thruout La Belle Province. The issue today, is that the government, as a result of the accomodation hearings associated with the Islamic presence in Quebec is resulting in actions that are hurtful to the Jewish community. Rights prevbiously gained are being eroded. The government is now forcing ALL schools whether they receive subsidies or not to teach courses about other religions. So it is a false premise, atleast in Quebec to believe that if you do not accept governmeny money that you are exempt from government regulation. This is a very serious problem principally due to the Islamic phobia engulfing Quebec.

The issue is not "whoever has the money has the control", The issue is that they are targeting the Jews through the education system. For example: The French people are upset at the education dep't for agreeing to the request from the Jewish schools to teach the mandatory French courses on Sunday. ,They had to retract their decision because of these antisemites.

I don't think vouchers would be a problem in this regard. It would not be the schools that receive the funds but the individual parents.

Many of the day cares are chosen because the parents want the religious instruction. There is generally no conflict with parents wishes, in fact, it is the contrary. That day care is chosen because it does offer instruction.

It is a small group of nationalists who are making waves. Charest is weak and cannot win reelection based on the Jewish/Anglophone vote. The government ahs increased the school year by 20 days. The concerns raised had to do with union contracts.
