New York, NY - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is offering financial help to truckers to buy new vehicles and replace hundreds of pollution-spewing trucks serving its marine terminals.

The program offers owners of up to 636 pre-1994 container-carrying trucks a 25 percent grant toward the purchase price of a new truck, and low-interest financing.

The Port Authority said today that pre-1994 trucks will be banned from serving its five terminals beginning Jan. 1, 2011.

Coalition for Healthy Ports spokeswoman Amy Goldsmith calls the program a welcome “initial step.”

But she said pre-1994 trucks account for 10 percent of the port fleet and that replacing them would place a “severe economic burden” on low-paid truckers.

Oy vay! Than they gono raise tolls again because they gave away money to others instead where it needs to go. We don't pay them to give it away. If they don't like old trucks ban them from coming without giving out money

This would be a great idea but it has nothing to do with the Port Authority. Btw in upstate (Monsey, Monroe, Etc.) They keep on getting every few years brand new School Buses...
