Detroit, MI - Religious leaders are to meet today with Department of Homeland Security officials to discuss their concerns about the use of airport body scanners that reveal the outlines of bodies.

The meeting comes after the Free Press reported last month that a Muslim group based in Indiana, the Fiqh Council of North America, issued an Islamic edict, a fatwa, that said going through body scanners would violate Islamic rules on modesty. The fatwa urges Muslims not to go through the scanners.

Margo Schlanger, the new civil rights head for the Department of Homeland Security, announced the meeting during a discussion Wednesday in Dearborn with Arab-Americans, Chaldeans, and Muslims, according to people who attended. Airports across the U.S. are starting to use body scanners after the Christmas Day bomb attempt in an airplane headed to Detroit by a Nigerian Muslim man.

Today’s meeting is to include Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders. Pope Benedict XVI reportedly voiced concern last month about the use of the body scanners, according to British media reports. And some Jewish leaders are also concerned.

Jim Fotenos, spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, said today that Detroit Metro Airport has 2 body scanners, with 43 units in 20 airports. There are to be 450 body scanners placed in airports this year, 150 by summer, he said.

So the people the scanners are for will not use them.
So the fanatics managed to create a disturbance for Americans without disturbing their fellow Muslim's, and we're just gonna go along with it.

Which JEWISH leaders are concerened about these scanners? I haven't heard of any...

I don't think that any normal Rabbi would be concerned. I hope i'm not wrong. But... if anyone knows of a legitimate concern such as "hichus tzniyus" i'm willing to listen and learn.

Thanks

Neither Bnei Yisrael nor Bnei Yishmael agree that there is a tzniyus issue.

How about a new airline called Fervent. It's for fervently religious Jewish and Muslims who don't want mixed seating and other special arranangments. Let them enjoy each other's company.

I think its good to have the conversation. I would start off. By saying to the terrorist leaders that its ok to bomb yourself as long as you do it in your own home.

Being frank usually works!

Oh, the irony! If it weren't for "Muslim leaders," we wouldn't be worried about this body scan stuff to begin with.

This is a great news! I am very hopeful that we will be able to work out some exemption from this horrible intrusion of privacy for individuals with a sense of decency or, if you prefer – tznius.

Even if it had to start with Muslims, so be it. It is to our shame that more Jews don’t feel this way. Still, soon I will be able to fly again.

And yes, it is ironic that the exemption started with the people who are the reasons for these intrusions in the first place. It should have started with us. But then again, the whole fiasco with these scanners is a result of this society not willing to act in its self-defense and look for perpetrators, not devices. You can’t deny the sardonic consistency of these notions: if it is ‘racist’ to profile, it is also ‘racist’ to force people to compromise their religious values to be able to fly.

Jokes from Muslim stand-up comic Goffaq Yussef; maybe it is a sign of peace when we start hearing humor from a Palestinian perspective....

Good evening gentlemen, and get out, ladies.

On my flight to New York there must have been an Israeli in the bathroom the entire time. There was a sign on the door that said, "Occupied."

What do you say to a Muslim woman with two black eyes?
Nothing! You told her twice already!

How many Palestinians does it take to change a light bulb?
None! They sit in the dark forever and blame the Jews for it!

Did you hear about the Broadway play, "The Palestinians"?
It bombed!

What do you call a first-time offender in Saudi Arabia?
Lefty!

Did you hear about the Muslim strip club?
It features full facial nudity!

Why do Palestinians find it convenient to live on the West Bank?
Because it's just a stone's throw from Israel!

Why are Palestinian boys luckier than American boys?
Because every Palestinian boy will get to join a rock group!

What does the sign say above the nursery in a Palestinian maternity ward?
"Live ammunition."

Palestinian girl says to her mommy: "After Abdul blows himself up, can I have his room?"

Maybe the muslim leaders should make an edict against stuffing bombs down your pants and trying to murder people?

The arabs are afraid of the scanners for one simple reason . Because the arab husbands are known for beating thier wives and the scanners can pock up on those bruises
