Jew Traveling from Iran Arrested for Smuggling Opium Into IsraelAshdod, Israel - The remand of an Iranian Jew who is suspected of trying to smuggle opium into Israel in tin cans was extended by six days on Thursday.
The suspect and his family landed at Ben Gurion Airport Wednesday night, and according to police they were carrying the largest amount of drugs seized in recent years.
Police launched an investigation some three months ago after being tipped off on the possibility of a smuggling attempt, and the main suspect was apprehended along with his wife and son while in possession of 14.5 kilograms (about 32 pounds) of pure opium.
The wife and son were released from custody and are staying with relatives in Ashdod.
During a hearing at the Ashkelon Magistrates’ Court, the man admitted to transporting the opium, but said it was meant for his personal use, adding that it was legal in Iran.
Police are currently checking whether criminal elements in Israel had ordered the opium. Police representatives rejected the suspect’s claim, saying he planned on selling the opium.

Now for the "lets be him dan l'kaf zchus" crowd:
1. Let's give him credit. At least he wasn't a low life that sent the opium with some innocent bochorim to do his dirty work and then disappear if caught.
2. Maybe you know he mamish did tshuva after they caught him, you know what I mean
3. He needed the money desperately to buy food and pampers for the kinderlech.
4. Don't be him dan (don't judgehim) till it would happen to you. Ere you fully clean. You mean to tell me you never smuggled stuff.
5. He is a tzaddik gomur. He probably only brought it to Israel to help people for medicinal purposes.
6. You see I know someone who tells me that her sister in law's brother knows the Rabbi and he thinks he may have davened with them years ago and he was momish such a special person. But I am not sure if it was him or maybe his Uncle once removed/

It amazes me that you can't think of the truth. Its obvious. He wanted to smuggle in canned fruits from Iran. He knew its illegal to bring in fruits. So he emptied the cans and put in opium. In other places in his valise he placed the wonderful fruits that he likes. After finding the opium, the police stopped looking, so he really tricked them and brought the fruits (and the fruit flies) into Israel. See how simple

i don't think there's anything wrong with opium at all, so the only problem is that he did something which was illegal.
why would he even bother smuggling opium into the country when he could grow it himself? take poppy seeds, plant them, grow them and harvest the opium!

You must be crazy! Search the phrase "afghanistan opium addiction" and see what it does to people and who communities. Why do you think the Chinese resented the Brits for introducing opium and opium dens?
