David Greenfield swept a special election for the 44th District seat on the New York City Council in a landslide victory Tuesday. He soundly defeated fellow Democrat Joe Lazar, taking the seat by a margin of 58 to 40 percent. Kenneth Rice, a Republican, took just three percent of the vote.

In both elections, a charismatic relative newcomer beat an established politician. In Brown’s race in Massachusetts it was Democrat Martha Coakley; in Greenfield’s case, his real opponent wasn’t Lazar, but Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who invested virtually all of his political capital in electing Lazar.

The election exposed the waning power of the assemblyman who has held Borough Park politics in a vise-like grip for the past 20 years. Despite heavy campaigning by Hikind and seemingly everyone in Borough Park who fancied himself an activist or power broker, and endorsements from chassidishe rebbes and politicians like Comptroller John Liu, Lazar didn’t even win Borough Park itself. The district also comprises portions of the Midwood, Kensington and Bensonhurst neighborhoods.

Greenfield managed an aggressive grassroots campaign that involved door-to-door campaigning, public appearances and support from an array of local and national politicians including Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“We did it the old fashioned way,” Greenfield said at his victory party Tuesday night. “We brought the community together.” Tomorrow, Greenfield said, he was “looking forward to put all this behind us, to work together.”

David Greenfield is a frum Jew, with Torah values.

Scott Brown is a non-Jew who attributes his success in his career to having posed nude for a magazine shot. And he has said that he would not object were his daughter do the same thing.

It is an embarrassment to David Greenfield to be compared to Scott Brown.

It is an embarrasment for Scott Brown to be compared to someone who is a symbol of everything that is unethical and self-serving about politics. Sure, Scott Brown may have posed nude. That is irrelevant to his ability to legislate. Greenfield is in cahoots with Vito Lopez, the corrupt Brooklyn Democrat Party boss who was right at Clarence Norman’s side for years, who even tried to block Jews out of subsidized housing in Williamsburg so he would get all of the Puerto Rican vote. He also opposed efforts at bringing justice to sexual abuse victims, and blocked legislation extending the statute of limitations on clergy abuse. Greenfield opposes bringing justice for the countless victims of pedophilia in yeshivos and Catholic schools. He went and got the endorsement (blessing) of the Roman Catholic bishop of Brooklyn, in opposing the Markey bill, and he used his power to bulldoze anyone who ran against him, except for Lazar. He used his well-oiled connections within the establishment and Board of Elections to knock an 18 year old kid and a 24 year old student of the ballot. Joe Lazar encouraged Abraham Tischler (the frum 18 year old college student) to run and promised to help him

Charlie, you should not comment on matters you are clearly so ignorant about. Stick to bioinformatics and things you know about. If there is ever anything about Bronx politics floating about, we will care what you have to say then. Until then, you should preserve your dignity and stop embarrassing yourself by commenting on things you haven’t researched in depth (as I have). Common sense is not common.

In the world of “what have you done for me know” the community decided that a young slick polished ‘up and coming’ who ran a dirty aggressive campaign (which is after all how political races are won) was a better fit, than an indivdual who though confrontational and often not aligned with the Haskafos of the chasidishe members of the 44th. There is no denying that Dov has been a strong fighter for BP and has brought millions of dollras into our community, so I personally rsesnt this hogwash of the tzibur wanting to get rid of the ‘machine’.

In recent years, Hikind has tried to deal with ugly things in our community, and pissed off too many ppl along the way, with the STYLE with which he tried to deal with these issues. Becuase of these behaviors, and David understanding that the community was tired of Hikind’s rhetoric (hikind never claims to be a sheep) David ran with this frusteration to victory. But make no mistake, just because you are a Hikind Hater and you bought into this garbage about a ploitical machines doesn’t mean that Dov Hikind has been an immense help, a strong advocate, a powerful force and an ohev ysiroel for our community.

Now that the election is over, I want to send a message to Joe Lazar.
A prominent Orthodox Jew being neutral on important moral issues is a big Chillul Hashem. Ask any Ehrliche Rov and do Teshuva.
