Washington - Report: Netanyahu Humiliated After Obama 'dumped him for dinner'

Washington - For a head of state to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of.

Yet that is how Binyamin Netanyahu was treated by President Obama on Tuesday night, according to Israeli reports on a trip seen in Jerusalem tonight as a disastrous humiliation.

After failing to extract a written promise of concessions on Jewish settlements, Mr Obama walked out of his meeting with Mr Netanyahu but invited him to stay at the White House, consult with advisors and “let me know if there is anything new”, a US congressman who spoke to the Prime Minister said today.

“It was awful,” the congressman said. One Israeli newspaper called the meeting “a hazing in stages”, poisoned by such mistrust that the Israeli delegation eventually left rather than risk being eavesdropped on a White House phone line. Another said that the Prime Minister had received “the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea”.

Advertisement:

Left to talk among themselves, Mr Netanyahu and his aides retreated to the Roosevelt Room. He later spent a further half-hour with Mr Obama and extended his stay for a day of emergency talks aimed at restarting peace negotiations, but left last night with no official statement from either side. He returns to Israel dangerously isolated after what Israeli media have called a White House ambush for which he is largely to blame.

Sources said that Mr Netanyahu failed to impress Mr Obama with a flow chart purporting to show that he was not be responsible for the timing of announcements of new settlement projects in east Jerusalem. Mr Obama was said to be livid when such an announcement derailed Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel this month, and his anger towards Israel does not appear to have cooled.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, cast doubt on minor details in Israeli accounts of the meeting but did not deny claims that it amounted to a dressing down for the Prime Minister, whose refusal to freeze settlements is seen in Washington as the main barrier to resuming peace talks.

The Likud leader now has to try to square the demands of the Obama Administration with his nationalist, ultra-Orthodox coalition partners, who want him to stand up to Washington, even though Israel desperately needs US backing in confronting the looming threat of a nuclear Iran.

“The Prime Minister leaves America disgraced, isolated and altogether weaker than when he came,” the Israeli daily Ha’aretz said.

In their meeting Mr Obama set out a number of expectations that Israel was to satisfy if it wanted to end the crisis, Israeli sources said. These included an extension of the freeze on Jewish settlement growth beyond the 10-month deadline next September, an end to Israeli building projects in east Jerusalem, and even a withdrawal of Israeli forces to positions that they held before the Second Intifada in September 2000, after which they re-occupied most of the West Bank.

Newspaper reports recounted how Mr Netanyahu looked “excessively concerned and upset” as he pulled out a flow chart to show Mr Obama how Jerusalem planning permission worked and how he could not have known of the announcement that hundreds more homes were to be built just as Mr Biden arrived in Jerusalem.

Mr Obama then suggested that Mr Netanyahu and his staff stay on at the White House to consider his proposals, so that if he changed his mind he could inform the President right away. “I’m still around,” the Yediot Ahronot daily quoted Mr Obama saying. “Let me know if there is anything new.”

With the atmosphere so soured by the end of the evening, the Israelis decided that they could not trust the phone line they had been lent. Mr Netanyahu retired with his defence minister, Ehud Barak, to the Israeli Embassy to ensure the Americans were not listening in.

The meeting came barely a day after Mr Obama’s landmark health reform victory. Israel had calculated that he would be too tied up with domestic issues ahead of the mid-term elections to focus seriously on the Middle East.

None of this should come as a big surprise to those of us who all along were very concerned about Barack Hussein Obama. What is terribly disturbing is the fact that our supposed leaders and organizations are paralyzed, unable to rally the Jews for a rally of hundreds of thousands in support of the State of Israel.

We are facing a possible End of Days scenario, or at the very least the most dangerous period for the Jews of Israel and possibly for world Jewry in 60 years.
And what are we doing? Finalizing arrangement for our trip to Florida, or buying tickets for a Chol HaMoed concert?

Wake up, Yidden! A fire is burning!

It is seriously time to do something about the way this administration is treating Israel. People please call your local Representative and Senator's office and tell them you are no longer planning to contribute or vote for the party that favors terrorism over democracy.
This has gone far enough. The arrogance of this man is overwhelming. He wants to fight with everyone who he knows will not fight back. The problem is that until the November election his party still has large majorities. We need to counter this by getting his party to tell him to lay off. He is a bully and must be brought back down to earth.

There is nothing to see here really. Israel is tasting its own medicines a little. With Natanyahu's orchestration, Turkish delegation was humiliated in front of global cameras, escalating diplomatic tensions between the countries. Now, the White House continues to feel humiliated for Biden's visit, so Obama is doing it in return to signal to the Arab world that U.S. doesn't just let the tail wag the dog unconditionally.

Time for Israel to jut out their chins, stick to their guns and tell the bin laden administration to shove it. Start some military maneuvers call up reserves and you'll see how obama will come crawling back. Israel is the only stabilizing force in the region. America has more to lose than Israel if America cools off relations with Israel. I take my hat off to all those that stated the true intent of Obama/Clinton when they ran their campaigns. All this is a pretext they are using to distance themeselves from Israel. This administration will lose BIGTIME. As if buiding some apartments is the obstacle to peace. One term President, one term Senate Majority.

No slapped anyone in the face, the USA is over-reacting with intention. Israel announced they are building in Jerusalem (where president Bush said they can) with an intention to make it clear where the red line is. They didn't dress down VP Biden,

It's good to see once again that the Democrats are all ANT-ISRAEL.

You are misinformed, if not for the Israeli RightWingers there would be no Israel today. The religious right were those that wrote the constitution of the United States and if not for them we would be another Zimbabwe. In a democratic system, everybody has the right to be heard and to amass political clout. Seems like Communism is more dear to you.

Very appropriate I'm sure, i wish this would have been after the six day war and the yom kippur war when the americans begged israel to come to the table and return the land they acqiured after being attacked by their enemies.
The appropriate response then would have been to ignore the Americans. Giving back the land made Israel weaker and put them in the position they are in today.

The only reason the world doesn’t put more pressure on Israel to give back does land is, because many Arabs don’t want peace. But this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try; and this is Mr. Obamas position. If you look at this objectively you would agree with him.

The whole world is against Israel, not the settlements. AND...... that means Jews, so wake up.

the problem is not with Obama. It is entirely with the insane religious right in Israel who stupidly embarrased the State's most important ally. Incredibly ironic that a group that contributes nothing to Israel is influencing policies. Israel has to come up with a different political system-one in which it is not necessary to appease a bunch of religious fanatic parasites to form a government. The US response was appropriate in the situation.

I was so upset when I heard Bibi was visiting the President after he was already slighted by Obama when he visited the Middle East but chose not to visit Israel. That was the first slap in the face. This is the second. Strike three and we had better make sure HE is OUT!

There are no settlements-these are cities. The world calls them settlements but they are communities for many, many years. Jews should not away any inch of holy land. The world is against Jews, but we should have achdus. Write to the President and let him know that his behavior is anti-semitic.

There is nothing to see here really. While we focus on how Natanyahu was treated, backroom deal is being reached where the Pentagon will be paying full price for 3 new C130J planes that Israel has ordered. $70 million for EACH plane will be payed by U.S. foreign assistance funds, of course with OBAMA's signature on the deal.

I agree to most of your comment. However;
Obama tried to humiliate, and ridicule us all. I am no big Zionist and no big fan of Bibi. What Obama did was to tell us all " blank you jews."
As for Bibi, when he was in the oposition he's been yelling to the government that it ia time to be independent of America. Lets see what he's going to do now?
In my opinion he has two options both of which 2 different posters has stated.
1) Turn to the Russians. 2) Call in the reserves. Either of the two will have the shwartzer calling him. I expect Bibi to tell him to take a hike.

They'll do anything and everything to block making peace. If they would think or hope there will ever be peace, they'd encourage Israel to build so they will have where to put their shrotzim when Israel gives it back to them just as they did in Gaza.

On the contrary, it is America that keeps slapping Israel in the face, and Israel keeps saying "thank you sir, may I have one more sir". America's continued non-recognition of Israel's choice of capital is itself a chutzpah that no other country would put up with; but its presuming to tell Israel who can build what in which neighbourhood is a complete slap in the face.

There is no way Netanyahu could or should have known about the housing announcement in Ramat Shlomo, any more than Obama would know about a public housing project announcement in the USA. And the Moskowitz building was a complete set-up, because 1) it was approved last July, and 2) Netanyahu has no power to stop it, any more than Obama can stop a private development in DC.

As once Foreign Minister Abba Eban once famously commented; "the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity" How befitting of a statement for your Muslim brothers! Israel uprooted entire communities in their withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. They stood up to fierce opposition from within their nation. They realized that peace must come with sacrifice. They even left the greenhouses that Israeli farmers so paistakingly and ingeniously operated in the middle of the dry land of the State of Israel(oh,I'm sorry-I meant the State of Palestine,or should I say,Jordan, Turkey, Britain....??) They left those greenhouses intact to help the Gazan "economy". What did your brothers do? They destroyed the greenhouses and whatever infrastructure that was left for them. How could they cry about the Israeli "siege" if they had a functioning economy? So you just ensure that there will not be an economy and then you just blame the horrible Israelis! Your brothers are masters at propaganda and it's no wonder that you are the same! Every time peace is seen anywhere near the Middle East, the Palestinians will find some sort of "Israeli provocation" to ensure that peace does not arrive to the region.

Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak was willing to give them parts of East Jerusalem but Yasser Arafat wasn't satisfied! Same with Olmert....It was said that when the Palestinians turned down Olmerts generous offers they turned down what no Israeli PM would ever give them. And so Mr. President;I believe it is high time that you come to your senses. It is high time that you realize that you live in the USA and not in Gaza. If you wish to continue in your current ways, may G-D curse you in every imaginable way. You will have a downfall like no US president has ever had. The Jews are G-D's chosen people whether you like it or not and you are treading on thin ice. G-D will protect his people like he has for the past 2000+ years. G-D does not require your assistance!

The problem is that Bibi behaves in the most contemptible manner. He apologized for the announcement in Ramat Shlomo. Then he shows up in the White House with a flow-chart (!) trying to show how Israeli bureaucracy is so entangled that any announcement is not his fault.

I mean, please. You are trying to play both sides of the fence. It sounds totally phony

If there is nothing wrong with building in Yerushalayim, then say so outright, don't apologize, and don't bring in any flow charts.

If you think there is something wrong with building in Yerushalayim, then you are the PM, get control of your own government and make sure the embarassment does not repeat itself. Would a U.S. President excuse some embarrasment directed at, say, the President of Russia, because the local zoning board of South Succotash did it and he can't control it? Laughable.

Actually yes. Under the Constitution of the United States, local zoning is a power reserved for the states and perhaps Congress. It is not under the President's control.

But little things like the laws of this never do bother Obama supporters or Obama's administration. And Netanyahu did say that there is nothing wrong withbuilding in Yerushalayim.

Everything is true obama is bad etc. But why in the world did eli yeshei announced the new project when VP. Biden was in israel? He couldn't wait another day or 2 ?

It wasn't Yishai who announced it; it was a routine publication by the ministry. Whoever in the ministry is responsible for housing approvals got to that particular piece of paper that day, sent it out, and never thought anything of it. Why should it have occurred to him that it would be a problem? The average Israeli doesn't know that the USA considers all of Yerusholayim (east AND west) to be occupied territory.

The later flap about Moskowitz's 20 apartments is even less of a story. The approval came last year, and all that happened now was a purely mechanical stage in the process. The person who stamped the plans, or whatever it was, had no discretion in the matter. There was no legitimate reason for it to have been reported by the press. No previous building has ever had a story published about its plans reaching this stage, because it's completely insignificant. It was only published by the newspapers in order to embarrass Netanyahu.

The only reason the world doesn’t put more pressure on Israel to give back does land is, because many Arabs don’t want peace. But this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try; and this is Mr. Obamas position. If you look at this objectively you would agree with him.

The whole world was also against Guantanamo Bay.

West Bank and Jerusalem belong to arabs? Are you mad? Where is your source?
Even the UN when creating Israel in 1947 defined the River Jordan as the frontier between the 2 newly created states fo Israel and Jordan. Um, no. Jordan was NOT created by the 1947 partition. The land WEST of the river was to be partitioned, and we were to get only a small portion of it. But who cares what that deal was? The Arabs rejected it, and it's no longer on the table. The only reason the Jews accepted it at the time was because they figured it was better than nothing.

The bottom line is that it was none of Biden's business to take notice of a routine notice by the Housing Department, any more than it's Netanyahu's business to take notice of the doings of the DC planning board. There was no reason for the person issuing the notice to think that it would be in any way controversial. This is not new, more than 2000 years ago, we had the same situation, and there were the zealots who burned down the food storages so that the Jews would have to fight the Romans, yes they did fight, but the country was destroyed. In every community Jewish or not, zealots are a problem. In Israel Bibi made the mistake and aligned his party with the zealots, but that is the consequences and the price for putting your party’s interest ahead of the State of Israel’s interest. The only solution I see is for Bibi, to evaluate his priorities and change his government and get rid of the zealots, they will one day figuratively burn down the state of Israel. So help us Hashem.

I agree the timing of the announcement should not have been in Biden's presence. I even agree that Israel will have to make concessions. It seems that Israel is asked to "get the ball rolling" What about the Palestians? What do they have to do other than to accept concessions from Israel?
The President is asking Israel to take chances in the hope of peace. Similar chances were taken at the time of Gaza. It is time to say let the Arabs: take chances in the hope of peace.
If Israelis so agree with Pres. Obama why do 9% of the population think he is pro Israeli while 48% believe him to be pro Palestinian?

My advice to the Israeli administration is not to answer the phone when Special Envoy Mitchell calls. He should instead spend some time with Jimmy Carter. You want to isolate Israel? no problem. Don't send Israel your negotiators, let's suspend all negotiations, status quo on all the territories, no land for peace, don't call us, we'll call you.

The idiocy of this whole fiasco is overwhelming!
Obama is fuming at Israel for disrupting the peace process? What peace process?

Mitchell finaly convinced the arabs to agree to come to the table with him, and he will shuttle back and forth to Netanyahu and try to get some kind of an agreement. And Obama is upset because after all of this 'goodwill' the arabs are showing, Israel announces that it is building on land in Jerusalem, which the arabs want and Israel very clearly stated will never be part of the negotiations.

If you believe in his socialistic policies for the government than you have a diffrent mindset than the Torah. Of course we should all be compassionate and help those in need. But that should be done with our money not with others and not against one's will. The Torah commands us to give charity, but does not force us against our will. Taxing us so that those who don't have enought will have more,is Communism in the true sense of the word.

Time to google the words Socialism and Communism. Learn what they really are. Then you can have intelligent discourse about American government programs, both those in place (such as Medicaid, Medicare, Welfare, Parks and Highways, Police, USPS, Water, public libraries, and many, many more) and Socialism and Communism.

Plenty of people, including my rabbi, do not think that my views are of "different mindset with the Torah." I guess you think you know more about Torah than my rav, my spouse and many others. Interesting claim from a random poster on the Internet. I haven't ONCE told anyone they don't know about Torah or follow Torah. But I have been told it because I support the president and his policies. It's amazing how strangers sitting at their computers feel the right to act like Torah experts. And, it turns out, experts on different political systems that they know nothing about.

I'm curious about where you live. What country? In the US we have to pay taxes to help others. I've been paying taxes (whether or not I want to) my entire working life. Maybe that's not the rule in your country, wherever that is. Then what right do you have to discuss the US?

Bibi was a terrible PM his first time around. He was perceived as arrogant and untrustwothy. LeHavdil, Bibi was a fantastic finance minister. A strong Israeli economy is a testament to the bold steps he took. Obviously, he is not the man to hold first chair and he should do what he does best.

I think you got it all wrong! I'm afraid it's our man in the White House who doesn't belong there. I think Bibi belongs right where he is.

Bottom line is.
The announcement at the time of Bidens meeting was humiliating.

If you want peace talks there will need to be concessions from the Israeli side too.
Obama is trying to get the ball rolling here...
Now whether you agree with that or not is up for debate but the fact remains that a large portion of Israelis agree with Obama as well.
SO to start calling him Hitler and Muslim...and anti semite is absolutely rediculous and appalling!!

When will the frum community grow up...and acquire a measure of maturity??

As an Amrican and as a Jew I strongly object to a) the surprise dropped on VP Biden b) the overaction of the administration to the stupidity of the Shas led housing department c) to the humiliating treatment of PM Netanyahu and d) more than anything else, to the disgusting lack of simple respect for the POTUS shown by many writers on VIN.

Many if not most of you should be deeply ashamed of yourselves for the lack of respect for the President, like him or not, agree with him or not and for the total lack of a sense of appreciation for the kindness this great nation has shown us and the total lack of humility you proudly display.

My only consolation is that in all likelihood the vast majority of you are misguided uneducated teenagers with outlandish ideas of our place in this world.

FYI, no, it doesn't. Netanyahu, Barak, Clinton, and Biden are NOT heads of state, and nobody ever refers to them as such.

It astounds me what idiots post here. If you don't know, then keep quiet; don't make things up and let everyone know you're a fool.

Here we go again, the ill informed here on VIN, were out last night what is it a full moon? All for what? Bibi got slapped on his hand like a child when he does something wrong. Wow the President of the US should not look for the interest of our country good idea, so Bibi and his rightwing nuts should get free reins to bring a disaster on Israel. So help us Hashem.

who r these zealots ur referring to? cause the ones who burned the store houses 2000 years ago were the biryonim who were thugs and no-goodniks and were what we would call off the d.

Netanyahu is a big boy. He tried the suprise settlement announcement to show Obama that he was the oberchacham. If Bibi has any seichel he will go home a little wiser to the fact that you cant treat the President of US as a janitor and get away with it. Nixon Kissinger or Ronnie Reagen would have kicked harder and faster.

The whole world was also against Guantanamo Bay.

West Bank and Jerusalem belong to arabs? Are you mad? Where is your source?
Even the UN when creating Israel in 1947 defined the River Jordan as the frontier between the 2 newly created states fo Israel and Jordan. The deal agreed by the whole world including USA and Russia was West of the Jordan (about 20%) for the Jews East of the Jordan for the arabs. There is not now and there never has been a country or nation of "Palestinians". It is fictitious creation of anti-semites, you included.

I’m sorry, but your information is not accurate.

In 1947 the UN (under the “partition plan”) agreed to give the Jews only part of (old Palestine) Erets Yisrel. Acording to that plan the Jews were entitled to even less then the 1967 borders.

On that condition did the UN and the USA and the whole world agree to a Jewish nation. So according to international law the West Bank dos not belong the Jews.

And by the way, I’m a Fruma Yid and not an anti-Semite. If all of you will think objectively you will agree with me

Everything I wrote is straight Torah. If you have a problem with it, take it up with Hashem. Hashem does indeed see everything, and we know what He wants because we have the gemoro to tell us. And that's how we know that he doesn't agree with you.

Then who does it belong to? The Arabs turned down the partition proposal, so it doesn't belong to them. In international law the only reason it doesn't now belong to Israel is that Israel hasn't claimed it.

Milhouse would be wise not to respond to you, as you are clearly not out to argue with any of his points, just to attack him. But I don't have a bone in this fight, so I'll answer you (I case you are interested):
Of course, any religious Jew with an ounce of Emunah in Hashem and His Torah believes to know what He wants.
It's that simple. Orthodox Judaism believes that Hashem gave us as a gift the Blueprint to His world, and in it we can find - if we care to look - what He wants is to do in any given situation. And judging by Milhouse's comments, he seems to have a healthy understanding of Jewish history and law, and bases his words on the Torah, which is G-d's word.

More outright kefirah. The heretics are certainly coming out of the woodwork today. Yes, God spoke to me, at Har Sinai. We have a Torah Shebichsav recording what He said, and we have a Torah Sheb'al Peh telling us exactly what He meant. And that is all there is to it. If you don't accept that, then you have no business on this site.
