Washington - The envoy from Qatar who sparked a bomb scare aboard a Denver-bound plane will being sent home from the United States, a senior State Department official told CBS News.

Authorities say the diplomat, identified as Mohammad Al-Madadi, grabbed a surreptitious smoke in a jetliner’s bathroom and he made a joke when confronted by federal air marshals that he had been trying to light his shoes - an apparent reference to the 2001 so-called “shoe bomber” Richard Reid.

The incident prompted a widespread alert that sent jet fighters scrambling to intercept the flight.

No explosives were found and authorities speaking on condition of anonymity said they don’t think he was trying to hurt anyone during Wednesday’s scare and he will not be criminally charged.

The authorities asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

I was at JFK and saw the massive double-decker Airbus 380 that belongs to "Qatari Airways." Why is this dork on a commercial carrier when he has a flying yacht?

Smoking is NOT TOLERATED on Qatari Airlines.

Come on. It was reasonably obvious from the beginning that if he said "I was trying to light my shoes" it was a joke. No actual terrorist would say that! For that matter, as I wrote last night, it's unlikely that the shoe bomb would be repeated, which is why the whole shoe-scanning rigmarole is probably useless.

Qutari Airways *IS* a commercial carrier. And they like all foreign carriers can not fly domestic routes in the USA. FAA regulation

Bruce Schneier coined a wonderful term for this - "Security Theater".

It's obvious that this guy is too stupid to be a diplomat and represent his country.
