England - Conservative Leader: 'I will empower UK Jews' |
|

England - David Cameron this week insisted a Conservative government would do “much more to protect and empower the Jewish community” and described learning about his Jewish ancestors as one of the highlights of his year.
The Conservative leader’s comments came in a message to members of the Movement for Reform Judaism, which he used to make pledges on tackling anti-Semitism and education and to appeal for the support of community members in the upcoming election.
Cameron said: “To me, one of the biggest contributions of Judaism is its understanding of what makes a responsible society. Last summer, I gave a speech to Jewish Care where I talked about this idea. I quoted a phrase of Rabbi Hillels which I think captures it beautifully: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I?” That urgent, selfless moral compulsion to change the world for the better is right at the heart of the Jewish way of life. If I become Prime Minister, I want to see that idea of responsibility extend right across our society.
“A key part of that will be about building a stronger, more cohesive society - and that means doing much more to tackle the rise in anti-Semitism. I was appalled when the Community Security Trust told me that there were more anti-Semitic incidents in the first half of 2009 than in the whole of any previous year. We need big changes to root out this extremism - stopping preachers of hate from entering this country, banning those extremist groups who are already here, and doing much more to tackle radicalisation in our universities.”
The man hoping to succeed Gordon Brown as prime minister also touched on a prominent theme of the party’s platform. “I want to build a bigger society,” he said: “And we can’t do that without backing faith-based organisations in the good work that they do. Take faith schools, for example. They are a really important part of our education system and often have a culture and ethos which helps to drive up standards. Through our school reform plans, there will be a real growth in new good school places, and I’m sure some of these will be in faith schools.”
Cameron also spoke of learning about his ancestors, the Levitas, as a personal highlight. He said: “I am a great admirer of the Jewish people and your extraordinary achievements. I’ve long seen your community as a shining light in our society.”

As much as I admire this man, I think it is too late for Europe to redeem itself.

I don't know this man or his policies, but keep in mind that as much as you think he's saying this so Jews might vote for him, there are probably ten times as many non-Jews who might NOT vote for him as a result of these statements.
So I'd assume there is at least some truth to his words.

I'll believe it when I see it. Start by making Schechita easier. Protect Jews & organizations from attack. Get rid of anti-Israel/anti-Jewish factions in the universities.
These things will happen when hell freezes over. Or Obama becomes a friend to the Jews & Israel. Whichever comes first.

If you'd look into it for a second, you'd see he means bigger society as opposed to bigger government. That is, he wants to cut down on government bureaucracy, which is certainly a conservative policy.

Jewish history is replete with instances when leaders of various countries "befriended" the Jews because it was expedient for them to do so, only to drop the friendship later on. In the Middle Ages, Jews held high positions because the kings of the day found them useful in the fields of tax collection. Of course, those kings expelled the Jews later on when they got the chance.

Actually your wrong. Do some research before you comment. It actually means the oppositte - he wants people, i.e society, to take more responsibility for themselves so that the government doesnt have to and hence a smaller government

I'm assuming you're not English or have a background in English politics. Conservative is equivalent to Republican - they are committed to small(er) government - think of Margaret Thatcher, the epitomy of the UK Conservative party.

Cameron is definitely better for the Jews than Gordon Brown is. But how is he compared to Nigel Farage? Farage wants to get the UK out of the EU so UKIP might be even better than the Conservatives.

Traditionally, the Conservative Party in the UK was never opposed to big government. Margaret Thatcher was the exception. It was the old Liberal party that wanted less government so that business and industry could develop; the Conservative Party was interested in protecting the aristocracy and rural interests.

In many respects the UK Conservative Party is to the left of the Democratic Party in the US. For example, there are no Democratic elected officials I'm aware of who support setting up a UK-style National Health Service. The UK Conservative Party wants to keep it as is.
