New York – Report: Israeli Gedolim Sign Kol Koreh Against Worms in Fish

    149

FILE -Abraham Kaufman (67, Hasidic Jew from Borough Park) enjoys his daily dose of fresh bagel with cream cheese, letter tomatoes and of course lox (smoked salmon) at his favorite Corner CafŽ located at 2 Ditmas Avenue. New York – The Five Towns Jewish Times is reporting that this past Friday, Rav Elyashiv, Rav Vosner, and Rav Karelitz have all signed upon a Kol Koreh declaring the Anisakis worm to be completely forbidden even when it was found in the flesh of fish.

According to the report The three Rabbinic leaders signed the letter after it was proven to them beyond any doubt that the overwhelming majority of the Anisakis worms enter the flesh of the fish through the viscera of the fish itself. The Rabbis rejected the alternative reading of the Shulchan Aruch Chapter 84 that was promulgated by a number of Rabbis in America and England. In that reading, the author of the Shulchan Aruch categorically states that all worms found in the flesh are permitted to be consumed – even if it is known that the worms arrived in the flesh directly from the Mayaim – the guts of the fish.

“This was the reading that Kadassiah in England and the OU in New York were trying to fit into the Shulchan Aruch,” remarked one Rabbi deeply involved in the Anisakis controversy. “The problem with the reading is that it is not in line with the thinking of the Rishonim on the matter.”

It is estimated that despite the written ruling which will be released in the next day or two, it may take some time for the Kashrus agencies to change their policies on the fish.

The letter was written at the behest of Rabbi Gershon Bess from the RCC in Los Angeles, California. Earlier last week, Rabbi Bess visited Rabbi Revach’s labaroatory in Beit Uziell. The laboratory found over sixty Anisakis worms in one specimen of salmon.

Interesting how the healthiest foods seem to be the ones being banned: berries, broccoli, leafy green vegetables, and now salmon and other fish.

There are 2 distinct type of worms in fish. One that comes from the outside either through the guts, nostrils, gills, etc. and migrates in to the belly flap & the flesh near the stomach. The other one enters via a parasite lay its eggs through the fish skin into the flesh. The fish becmes the host that nourishes the egg & the worm that hatched. It’s usually found nearer to the skin which “Chazal” say it’s mutter as it grows completely from the fish & it’s between the skin & the flesh. The first type Chazal say is “usser” as it came from the outside. Both types may look the same as the anisakis worm.

So when will some creative, entrepreneurial Yidden start farming “worm-free” salmon?

Most lox is from farmed salmon. Farmed salmon does not have the anisakis worm problem. The wild salmon is very infested, as when it heads out to spawn it stops eating, so the anisakis leave the stomach and migrate all over the salmons flesh. Canned wild salmon has its own additional worm issues, as the viscera is not cleaned out well prior to canning. The viscera has worms that came from the outside & is “usser” according to all.

Rabbi Yair Hoffman pointed out last week that it can be checked and cleaned with a light box if you know what to look for, so I don’t see why everyone is so upset about this Issur, maybe it is because people like to make fun of Rabanim or maybe they love the Anisakis so much.

not gonna happen in america. Rabbi Belsky, Rabbi S Miller & Rabbi D Feinstein all hold that its muttar. They say that R Moshr said so as well, 30 years ago. then, the israelis also assered!

Look you really don’t have to put up with these rabbonim and their torah and halachah thing that causes you so much headaches
There is Xristianity atheism and even conservative judaism all so much easier
But the rest of us are prepared to accept some ol malchus shamayim and be macniya and respectful to the torah and rabbanim that we have

It would be nice to see an Halachic, reasoned responsum (Teshuvah) instead of a Kol Koreh. A psak should have its sources and reasoning laid out by the posek in a teshuvah. A kol koreh is meaningless.

The problem is that the machmirim are effectively undermining chazal and the shulchan aruch which made no distinction regarding worms found in the flesh.

obviously the Israelis have an agenda ansd would rather be machmir on everything. Rav Belsky shlita was in Eretz Yisroel before Pesach for his grandsons Bar Mitzva. He tried twice to get in to Rav Eliyashiv shlita but was not allowed in.
sorry but I find it very hard to believe anything that comes out beshaim R’ Elyashiv even if its in writing.

Lots of tumul here. I want to wait and read the actual kol koreh – if there is one. We have too many rumors and reports of this, that and the other floating around. When my Rav tells me it’s assur, that’s when it will be assur, not when I hear “reports” that “a kol koreh was signed.” And in that case, I’ll want to know: Who was it signed by? The Gadol, or his gabbai acting in his name without consulting him?

So you all telling me OU and all the experts in the Heksher world have missed this issue for decades? Come 5 wise men and made a new discovery? Oy Vey, no wonder Moshiach didn’t come all these ages, because we were eating Lox with worms in them… Then we should all buy our own microscopes and start examining every single product that goes into our mouth, maybe we will find more non-kosher foods that we were eating for hundreds of years.

(Reply to 19) Let’s just say that the 3 Rabanim you mentioned really were Mattir these Anisakis after they were presented with all the facts, I still don’t see why a person with Yiras Shomayim wouldn’t check and clean their fish from these Anisakis, after all we are talking about a serious D’orayse Shayla.

The anisakis in salmon only include “wild salmon”. Farm raised salmon, also known as “baby salmon” does not have the problem.
So the regular salmon sold for shabbos in the local fish stores are mostly baby (farm raised) salmon. You cam ask your fish store about it.
However, canned salmon is wild, and has the problem. Even many of those who are mattir salmon, still have a problem with canned salmon.

And the million dollar question is where in Halacha does it say you have to use a microscope to find worms?

If we use a microscope on anything including the one million kosher products on the market we will find bugs and worms in everything.

has anyone looked at soemthing under a microscope? You will be surprised what you see so maybe we should just stop eating everything and prsy to g-d we don’t die from starvation.

Judiasm is starting to become the biggest business and scam instead of a religion. What a shame.

Farmed fish, especially salmon, is full of chemicals that cause cancer and birth defects. If you are going to stop eating wild salmon because of a halachic concern about worms, you definitely should not eat farmed salmon. U’shmartem et nafshoteichem.

Rabbi bess lists Herring as acceptable. He may have missed the boat on that one, herring does have the anisakis worm. Others claim that only those from Holland, Germany, Russia areas have them but not from Canada. The reports we have seen do not distinguish Canada from the others.

As far as I know, none of these Talmidey Hachomim Shlit’a are my Rav. So I am sooooo not excited whatever they are stating, that is not even funny. But if my Rav tells me, listen to them, I’d no question would do that.
All I am saying that each community has its Rav and it is the Rav’s job to assert his halachic position. I don’t need to worry for and about that.
And all of you guys so. If you ignoring your Rav and follow one of these Sages, then swithch Rav and follow his shita. You can’t pick and choose, not even chumros. It’s not fair to your family, going on chumra shopping. Aseh lecha Rav! In the singular.

The problem today is that in the old days we checked a what the torah says and it was ok but today if I will be able to turn the world upside down and say on avrey thing its not kosher then I will have ppl following me and be able to be a bigger RABBI and say on the other rabbi שגץ. Why don’t evrebody do what his ruv says and shut up about the other ruv.
BTW since when does one of the 3 rabonim do in kashrus that they should know how a worm looks etc.
