Verizon has asked regulators for permission to end the annual delivery of White Pages to all its customers in New York.

According to the company, only about one of every nine households uses the hard copy listings.

Verizon said most people look up numbers online or call directory assistance.

Verizon was formed when Bell Atlantic and GTE merged on June 30, 2000

it would be nice if they just gave a dvd with all current listings. the fact is the white pages are not always accurate, and some of the internet listings are lacking. one of the nice things about the white pages is the ability to “scroll down” the page when you are not sure of a spelling or address.

This is long overdue. They’ve been trying to discontinue the hard copy listings for years but each time there have been a small number of nostalgic intervenors who scream “gevalt” and how important it is to retain the books. I haven’t used a phone book in years and don’t know anyone else who does either. by the time you find th book and look up a number you can have it on your Iphone, blackberry or an old-fashioned desktop computer (for those who still haven’t moved to mobile web access). Lets stop wasting money and trees printing millions of copies of these relics of a prior century.

You’d think they’d first announce the creation of a new home-phone that has a small drop-down keyboard so you can punch in a name & get listings right there and then dial it automatically.
    One day. One day.

Maybe they should print it for those people who don’t have a computer or maybe for people who need to look up an address on Shabbos or Yom Tov, and charge $5 a book. Seems reasonable.

I use it very rearly. Usually as soon as I get a new one, the old one goes into recycling. But the real reason I use it is, is as a highchair for my little kids. Just sit them on the phone book at the table and enjoy.

The companies that make the phone books will have to lay off thousands of people. we should continue to make these books even if nobody uses them so jobs won’t be lost.

    they’re right.

i haven’t used the yellow/white pages in years, and every year that it lands on my doorstep, it goes straight into the garbage can.

They should offer free directory assistance on the phone if they drop the phone book

You don’t need phonebooks in the Internet age. Put four or five laptop computers on your kitchen table chair, and your child will be at just the right height.
