The source confirmed a report Tuesday in The New York Times that Paterson will direct state agencies to begin picking positions that could be eliminated starting Jan. 1.
That date marks the expiration of the no-layoffs pledge Paterson gave public employee unions last year in exchange for an agreement to reduce pension costs. It would also be the day Paterson leaves office.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan hasn’t been formally announced.
State leaders are facing a $9.2 billion deficit this year and still haven’t completed a budget for the fiscal year that began April 1.
let him start with laying himself off today
and his wifes staff as well.
This is probably the best new we have heard from Patterson. If he had proposed such bold reforms of state government he would still be the leading candidate for reelection. There are too many government employees that serve no really critical function. In the shul I used to daven in Albany, nearly half the olam worked for the state in some capacity and most of them did jobs that didn’t seem “critical” that we couldn’t get by without or have them done in in the private sector. Maybe this long overdue action will lower our taxes.
so they will collect unemployment , what by the way, also cost money…
Unemployment doesn’t last forever, have some rachmanus.
Patterson is still hiring management people at $150,000+ and talks about laying off workers making an average of $35,000. That’s going to balance the state budget? It’s a scam and you’re being fooled.
