New York – The Rockland County Legislature has voted to ban the use of artificial trans fats in food items prepared or served at food establishments, including school cafeterias.

The legislation passed 12-to-5 Tuesday night. If signed by County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef, it would go into effect Jan. 1. Violators would face a penalty of $1,000 per day.
Health experts say trans fats clog arteries and elevate bad cholesterol.
Similar bans went into effect in Westchester County in 2007, and in New York City in 2006.
How does that affect all those parve desserts in restaurants?
Loads of concern about parve deserts, might also apply to any cake with cream and especially to Pesach cakes.
ANYBODY that understands how harmful these trans fats are would never consider eating them so Thank the regulations for helping. Any fat that is not liquid at room tempertaure is about the same in your bloodstream (simplified but kind of true, especially trans which we as humans can not digest).
I’ve advocated healthy eating since my grandmother first showed me why she grew organic foods (she started in the 1930s) But I find it troubling when the government tries to alter our diet by law (except in the case where the government is providing the food, IE, school lunches) Do you want the government to force you to eat this but not that. (The government of New Zeeland does not allow kosher chickens!)
If families do not take responsibility for the food for both adults and children eventually well meaning and not so well meaning people will.
It not science fiction to foresee vegans or anti Semites forcing the population to follow their “rules” if they are in control of government.
This has been in effect in New York City for years, so there must be trans fat free substitutes that work for parve desserts.
Why, oh why are so many frum Jews so obsessed with pretending they are eating treif? “Parve” desserts are no substitute for real milky desserts, nor are so called “kosher shrimps” anything like the “real” thing (so I am told by goyishe experts in the field). Take any high class recipe book and see that so many of their desserts have no cream or milk anyway! So why is it that most kosher restaurants feel the need to present us with this awful, and unhealthy imitation?
I don’t care if it is good for you or not – I don’t want the government making my decisions for me on what I can or cannot put in my body. Come on people, this is a country that is founded on freedom of choices and you are just sitting back and say go for it – I am not smart enough to do it for myself.
